In this video I show you some of the differences between the Penn Squall II and Penn Fathom II. I hope it helps you make a decision on your next reel purchase. RSG Outdoors Facebook: / rsg-outdoors-104691041...

Very good break down and review. I've always used Abu 6500 Pro Rockets, but I've been thinking about trying some squalls. i appreciate that you took the time to tear em down and show the internals. Good job, i love that the Pro Rockets have true floating spools with for bearings, but the Penn seem like tanks when i have used them.

The Squalls and Fathoms are both solid reels. I've got a few Abus as well, and I feel like they cast farther, but for sheer winching power in a reel, a Penn is hard to beat.

I've used the Squall 20LW many times on the pier as my fighting reel for King Mackerel and it's more than enough.the key is maintenance.Caught a few good sized Cobia with it as well.

The Squall is a great reel. The Fathom is just going to have an edge in longevity and pressure the frame can tolerate.
@deanmiller61777 ай бұрын
Update..caught a 72 inch 81lb tarpon on my Squall20LW.had no issues.I think it's safe to say these and the 30LW will work just fine in saltwater.i do use the fathom on the boats when fishing for bull reds though.

I've been running 1990's Daiwa sealine 47H reels, love everything about them "if" I could improve 1 thing would be more drag but they work for me

I have a squall 20LWLH that I’m looking to improve its casting on. I recent learned that you can Mag conventional reels yourself so I’m going to be trying that as well as replacing the bearings
@RSGOutdoors2 жыл бұрын
Replacing the bearings is an excellent way to improve your casting distance and the longevity of your reel. Unless you are having extreme difficulty with backlashing I wouldn't mag the reel, it'll cost you casting distance.
@texasfortytwo Жыл бұрын
I'd just like to add that the squalls don't have a backup anti reverse dogleg whereas the fathoms have both an anti reverse bearing and dog leg anti reverse in case the anti reverse bearing fails

I have 25NSD in Squall, and in Fathom. The squall just sits unused. There really is no comparison when you use them both on big, tough fish like tuna or big sharks. You will be happier with the better version.
@RSGOutdoors5 ай бұрын
I would agree, the fathom is a better saltwater choice, but the squall will fair just fine if that's what fits your price range better.

Ive used the Squall II 50LW to catch some nice sized stingrays here in Cali, biggest one weighing over 80 pounds its also great for hauling in some jumbo Dungeness!!! love casting this thing with 80 pound braid

Both are great reels it's about the price

Or the fish. Tuna will absolutely destroy the squall, in short order.

Hi, thanks for the nice and simple explanation. What are the sizes of the reels?
@RSGOutdoors7 ай бұрын
These are both size 20 reels.
@paulmanini96147 күн бұрын
how come it’s so hard to find the penn fathom size 15 in left handed version ?
@RSGOutdoors3 күн бұрын
Pretty sure it's because they stopped making the level wind fathom 15 in left hand all together.

Awesome Details.. I found some used fathoms 20s I will be using live bait’s most of the time. I love free spooling clickers with some drag/tension pulling big baits in river’s 95$ a piece what’s your thoughts? Thanks for the video

Parts for most penn reels are easy to find, so even if they have some minor issues you will be able to fix them easily. They will work great for your fishing style and the deal sounds like a steal! GL!

Reviews I've read said the Squall is made for bottom fishing and doesn't cast well.
@RSGOutdoors2 жыл бұрын
They cast just fine. I routinely make casts of about 90-100 feet without issue. I could probably cast much farther if I needed to.

Oh God no! When i take a reel a part all I end up with is a bag of parts..
@RSGOutdoors2 жыл бұрын
😄 they make trays with part slots if you need them. Otherwise, easier to just take it to a qualified reel repair center.

Does the fathom have a 2 speed button
@RSGOutdoors5 ай бұрын
No, the fathom does not come in a 2 speed reel. Penn makes a couple 2 speed reels though.
@lonewulf53122 жыл бұрын
Which one would you recommend for bottom fishing for haddock, cod and pollock? About 2-300 ft.
@RSGOutdoors2 жыл бұрын
Either one will work just fine for those species. I'd get a size 30 though for the extra capacity since you may be fishing pretty deep.
@abdul-hadidadkhah14592 жыл бұрын
The 20lw has plenty of line capacity and a better gear ratio for working sidewinders on the wrecks. 30lw are more suited for conger, ling and bigger fish. Try and pay a little more and get a line counter version.

I was just wondering I’m going to be doing some bank fishing for sturgeon do you think it the reel will be ok to put a surf rod and cast out with it
@RSGOutdoors2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! I use them on surf rods in the ocean with no issues, they cast very well. Depending on the species and size of sturgeon you are chasing you may want to go with the 30 sized reels for the extra line capacity, as large sturgeon can make some very long runs. Good luck!

Hi! Im just thinking to buy Okuma Cold Water Cw-203d (or 303d) or PENN Squall II SQLII20LWLH. What will be the best choice to fish salmon/trout on trolling boat and mb catfish . Also thinking , will counter be a problem if i want to use this reels as casting not a trolling? ty so much
@RSGOutdoors2 жыл бұрын
The Okuma Cold Water is an excellent reel as well, but I would say the Penn Squall II is a little better. Neither is a bad choice for your intended purpose so go with the one you prefer and that fits your budget the best. As for the line counter, it won't interfere with your casting ability. I have several different reels with line counters and all cast as well as the same model without the counter.

Can you cast the squall
@RSGOutdoors Жыл бұрын
Yes, they cast very well.

Fathoms are way better at casting longer distance than the squalls in my opinion
@RSGOutdoors11 ай бұрын
Fathoms have an extra bearing where a Squall has a bushing. Lends to a little smoother cast with slightly more distance.

Yes. The squall II has plenty of power and line capacity. They cast well too.

I don't like anything with a lot of moving parts iam a fan of the old school Penn reels
@RSGOutdoors2 жыл бұрын
Penn has always made great reels. Old or new, with a little maintenance they last a lifetime.
