The actual trick is stupidly simple once you figure it out (false back on the cage hiding the woman in the gorilla costume), but it's Penn and Teller's stage presence, charisma, and showmanship that turn it into magic.

So what's the "misdirection" here? Making the audience think that they actually snuck her in at some point?
@Durwood71 Жыл бұрын
@@edmis90 The misdirection was Penn lying to the audience that they were going to make the chicken disappear, so nobody was looking for the real trick, which was the woman in a gorilla costume suddenly appearing inside the cage. By the time the reveal happens, most people have forgotten that the cage started out considerably narrower.

@@edmis90 2 suggestions 1) We never see the back of the box. In the first few seconds of the act, Penn literally tells you his definition of misdirection, which, may or may not be different to yours. Anyways the chicken was the misdirection, because you wouldn't normally notice how close to the front of the cage, and how close the back "cloth" is to the chicken. Penn's whole speech on misdirection was to distract you from noticing that.

She didn't fill the entire cage. At least not in all 3 dimensions. She simply was further to the back at the beginning, then got the chicken and gave it to Teller to carry it away, then went a little forward so that she was at the front so it looked like she filled the cage completely. You can see how much the Cage shakes during that time and how Penn tries to cover that up by wildly gesticulating and bumping into the cage over and over again so that it seems hat this is his doing.

Spookyturbo Exactly. Penn & Teller are fantastic magicians not for having the most complicated or difficult to perform tricks. They are fantastic because they are capable of weaving and presenting a story that the audience believes about how a trick is done, only to pull the rug out from under them with a reveal that would be impossible if the trick were down how they make the audience think it was done. Honestly, anybody could easily perform this trick with little training or practice. It's honestly quite simple. Few people would be able to fool or even entertain an audience with this trick, however, because few people have the ability to misdirect an entire narrative built by an audience, rather than just use simple misdirection to distract them.

Most people here have noticed that the gorilla was in the cage the entire time, but, if you watch closer, penn is constantly leaning on the box to apply weight to it, and the cymbals are there to mask the sound of movement. He applies weight to keep the box from shifting and moving around on its own, which you can tel by alwatching the golden cloths pieces moving frantically when the cymbals start going off.

It is a rather large prop, larger than most can see, at least at first. Wouldn't you agree? It's big enough to hold a chicken, a gorilla or even both at the same time. Nathan Spotswood there was no chicken, so no teller didn’t walk a chicken of the stage.
@cameronjames34996 жыл бұрын
Well 3 things; he didn't necessarily take the chicken out back (it's just implied). Secondly, this may be quibbling but it wasn't a gorilla it was someone in a gorilla suit, while it's semantics and shorthand it does show how the verbal framing works, ie he got the audience already agreeing to incorrect things. Lastly, who says there was a chicken? Odds are very high that it was just a quality animatronic (you can spend a lot of cash when you reuse it a lot) - when it's a live animal one assumes they have a lot less leeway for screwing around (assuming they are ethical, which their public image is built on) - it would definitely suit their sense of humor if the actual name sake of the trick about misdirection is part of the joke - ie there is no 'vanishing chicken' because there was never a chicken.

I feel like there was a false wall at the back of the cage and she was actually sitting in the cage behind the wall the whole time, And the cymbals muffle the sound of the wall being dismantled as Teller grabs the chicken. Then as Teller is walking pff stage, he outstreched the side of his coat to make it look like he was just concealing the chicken, but he was actually concealing the fact that he was also carrying away the wall

Penn and Teller-- Timeless Legends! The first act of theirs that I remember (may or may not be 1st time I saw them), had Teller hanging upside down and tied up (straight jacket? I don't know...), with a flame underneath the rope holding him up. Penn recited the entire "Ballad of Casey Jones" as Teller struggled to free himself. The rope was timed to burn through exactly as Penn recited the final words of the Ballad! Teller, of course, freed himself and landed nimbly on his feet at the point the rope burned through! Stunning act! Whether or not that was the 1st time I saw them, I definitely remembered them ever since...

Spoilers: Took me multiple watches to figure it out but there are two people in two different gorillas suits. The first one we see on stage. The second one is in the back of the cage. If you look at when the chicken is first shown, the background is purple. When the gorillas comes out, the background is clear. The cage has a false back that the gorilla was able to hide behind and come from out of when the curtin was put down. Im sure others have figured it out, im just happy that I've been watching so much of these guys that I can finally start figuring out their tricks by watching them over and over

She was in the cage the whole time. When the chicken was in there they had a purple back drop which was designed to look like it had depth, when in actuality it sat inches from the front. When she gets out after, you will notice there is no purple back on the box.

@@ReyXO1 First off it's a red cloth, purple background, they don't match. Second when he pulls the cloth over to hide the chicken you can see no movement in the purple background, implying it is 1.) not fabric, and 2.) not part of the moving blanket.

Of course, the "mechanics“ of this trick are pretty old and any magician and even layman can decipher this one pretty easily. But it was mainly about the presentation and the story regarding „misdirection“ and it's purpose from a magicians point of view. And they visualized it pretty beautifully - because most of the people didn‘t see that gorilla punch line coming. And that was the whole purpose of the trick - not the mechanical execution itself.

The Gorilla suit WAS the misdirection. Because you have no way to verify if the first gorilla suit with cymbals was in fact Georgie. When she was in the cage the whole time. It would be much harder to pull off if you specifically saw HER playing the cymbals AND also emerge from the cage. Besides, they were both wearing different boots.
