Penn Torque spinning Review

Here is my review of the penn torque spinning reel. Its a great reel penn did a awesome job, finally an american reel that can mentioned in the same breath as a Daiwa saltiga or Shimano Stella. For additional info see below links.

I was just toying with the idea of a Torque but you convinced me, and if I did I was going to get the 7 but when you showed the size versus the Saltist 6500, I realized I needed the bigger size for what I am going to use it for (for Kingfish-cousin to your guys Amberjacks & shark fishing i.e Makos, Bronze Whalers & Hammerheads & Broadbill Swordfish if I can get enough line on it-will have to use Berkley Whiplash to do so) I have a Slammer III in 8500 &10500, but will sell the 8500 now as it is the same exact spool size as the Torque 9. They are more akin to my Saragosas/Saltists, but I would say the Slammer 3's are between those said midrange reels and the super spinners like my Stellas/Saltigas, probably more a fair comparison with a Twinpower or a Catalina really. Penn have really got their act together of late regarding spinning reels. I have a reel problem-49 of them, the torque 9 will be 50....I really have to stop, I think it's an illness or addiction lol, but seriously i am sick :P Thank you for enabling me lol p.s. if you do mainly shore fishing, would you consider the bailess model/conversion? @@sdot79 I forgot to say I got the Torque 9 (new old stock-they had 1 left) for $430usd or $650 kiwi dollars. Your vid was in 2012...is your torque 1 size 7 still going strong? have you thought about a silver Torque 2? Kia Ora

scott huge fan of the torque series. I no longer have the reel. It was replaced a few years back with a Diawa Expedition. I would highly reccomend the torque one however. I hear it's better than the torque 2 for all out durability

I have an s5 penn torque. Stripped the gears inside after about 6 times out fishing for grouper and amberjack. Penn did repair it very quickly.

Awesome reels. I caught 18 halibut weigh between 36 to 65 lbs with this reel and it still going strong. use ultra braid or power pro line for deadly combination. Thank for the great review.

one of the best review from the point of a good background experience . am still awaiting my s7 black one . heard about issues with some having a bad line lay but again there r always been issues with saltiga n stella as well ! the reel looks awsome from any angle u look at it n made like a brick too. hope am right with this purchase. tight lines from arab gulf.

@ Manuel Fernandez, the new saragosa Its a great reel... but clearly a few steps below the torque. The torque is also a fully sealed reel....saragosa is not. While the saragosa may last you a season or so of hard fishing... the torque is in the same class as a 2010 saltiga/2008 stella... I would mention the new stella's but shimano dropped the ball.

You should get the new version but if you don't no worries.... Penn has great service and the reel is super easy to update almost to easy...

What size fish are you targeting? That's a very powerful reel hell they all are but the 9 has 50lbs of drag... so unless you are targeting big sharks or most sting rays the torque 5 is a great fit....

The rod is dependant of what fish you are targeting.... sharks for ex: are you casting out or are you boating out to the fish? kinda depends

I would go with a torque 7 unless you are targeting huge groupers and if that is the case I wouldn't use a spinner for that. Just to give you as idea the torque 9 is like a bigger stella 20k, people use those reels to catch 300lbs Bluefin tuna.... its a beast of a reel torque 7 is prolly a better fit they all have outstanding drags.
