Thank you so much for this video! I haven’t used it yet but i bought one a couple days ago. I was having my doubts until i saw this video tonight. I do a lot of 200ft jigging and i wanted something to match with my Rampage jigging rod. I can’t wait to use it. Everything i own is Penn dude! I have the Battle 5000 on the Ugly Tiger. Don’t get me wrong that setup is bulletproof but i can’t wait to ever so gently real the shit out of the fat sea bass and these heavy Taug with this reel. Penn all the way man!

Dang, that smog in the background. I surfed Newport nearly every weekend as a kid. I call Florida home now. I have this reel in the 400 size. Haven't really put it to the test yet. My hopes are high though.

Just picked one up! Going to use it for swimbait/a-rig fishing for bass as well as light jigging for rockfish on a 7,9MH rod. I think it should handle both great!

How would you recommend it for freshwater fishing for largemouth bass or flathead catfish in Florida for someone who doesn’t do well with bait casters
@PENNfishing2 жыл бұрын
Our low profile baitcasting reels are available in three different sizes, the 200 series is best suited for Largemouth and Catfish and are available in 6.6:1 and 8.0:1 gear ratios in both the Fathom and Squall series. www.pennfishing.com/collections/low-profile-baitcast-reels

Great Video, I just purchased a PENN Squall 400 Low Profile Baitcaster Reel. I see you are using 65lb Spiderwire braid, what rod do you recommend for this? and/or what rod do you use?
@PENNfishing11 ай бұрын
Hi Philip! Great question - really it depends on the species you plan on targeting with it, and the technique you want to use. Have a look at our Inshore rods here: www.pennfishing.com/search?q=inshore&layout=products

Just getting into saltwater fishing, I’m looking for for an all around workhorse for so cal. I plan on fishing off Newport harbor jetty, and occasionally off charter boats around Catalina. Targeting anything from calico bass up to 50lb tuna. would you recommend a Fathom FTH25N on a 7’ carnage II 30-80lb rod? Or the Fathom low profile FTH400 on the prevail II rod?
@PENNfishing3 жыл бұрын
Our Low Profile Series is designed for inshore species primarily, you may want a FTH25N for an all round setup. In the rod department, you may want a longer than 7' rod if you'll be casting from shore - primarily for more casting distance. However, if you'll be doing most of your fishing from a boat, a 7' is a great option.

Which would be best suited for tarpon off jetties? Line capacity sometimes is an issue with these fish and then fishing on structure…
@PENNfishing3 жыл бұрын
The Fathom features an aluminum frame and sideplates and has a higher maximum drag, better suited for large Tarpon.
@Fuskymonkey3 жыл бұрын
This is a bad answer, just trying to upsell you. If you’re worried about line capacity, just get the 400. These things have almost double the drag that their 4-4.5k size spinning reels have that I’ve caught tarpon on. I’ve seen people catch tarpon on 300 size. Either way, landing tarpon is hard so don’t sweat it

Hello...back on here again. First. Would have loved to hear what rods he teamed up with his low profile 300's. So my rant....The Fathom low profiles are not designed for salt water. If so they would have stainless steel metal drag washers and the HT-100's come slightly greased. Went back out to do some surf fishing with my Fathom300HS low profile. Iv'e switched up to a Fenwick Elite, medium, fast. Throwing a popping cork with 3/4ounce under it. I have no problem casting this at all now. I guess for a $300 bait casting fishing reel I thought the Fathom low profile line of reels would be sealed up better then they are. I only go out to the second sand bar which is usually between my knee's and waist. Sure the reel has been splashed on by some waves slapping off of me. I have always low pressure freshwater rinsed my stuff as soon as I got home from fishing. After drying outside I bring my rod/reels inside to store in climate controlled conditions. Well. While out on a Saturday when I first got in to the surf. I pulled on my line to check the drag. Line wouldn't budge even after loosening the drag all the way up. Had to get my pliers and wrap it a few times with line and then pull till it broke free. The drag just seemed sticky after. Took it in to a great local Tackle shop owned by a guy I went to school with... Serious Tackle, in La Marque, TX. Picked it up a week later. My metal drag washers were all surface rusted and rust had also contaminated the HT-100's. Shop had to replace everything in the drag assembly and Cal Grease the washers lightly for a total of $90. Guy says bait casting reels are not sealed up very well at all and see there is a drain hole here at the bottom of the reel below the drag. PENN SHOULD SAY IN THIS VIDEO THEN...THE LOW PROFILE LINE IS DESIGNED TO BE FISHED "OUT OF A BOAT ONLY" ON FRESH OR SALTWATER OR ONLY IN THE SURF WHERE THE BEACH IS LIKE GLASS, SO MUCH YOU COULD SKIM STONES OFF THE TOP. THE ONLY SALTWATER ALLOWED TO TOUCH THE REEL IS THE WATER SPRAYING OFF THE LINE AS YOU REEL IT IN. So now....This nice set up I have will have to sit in the corner till one year I can buy a boat it seems. What a waste. Way to make me have to buy a different rod n reel setup for surf fishing with artificial or a popping cork Penn. I will now have to mount this Fathom300 on a med/hvy to hvy rod setup to target larger fish off the beachfront from a boat and buy a smaller 200baitcaster setup for bay fishing only out of a boat and a 2500-3500 setup for the surf throwing an artificial and a bigger 4500-5500 spinning reel to chunk a 1oz to 6oz weight bottom fishing in an IPX6-IPX8 rating. Maybe that's your whole idea of getting more business by leaving out some details on your product lines?
@PENNfishing5 ай бұрын
We are sorry to hear you feel this way, and apologize for the inconvenience this has caused you. We do offer IPX sealed reels for circumstances where immersion is a concern, however not in our low profile reels. We appreciate the time you've taken to provide your feedback from your experience, it is first hand accounts from our anglers like yourself which aids in the development of our future product lines.

Which one can be the best for halibut fishing in SF Bay Area ?
@PENNfishing7 ай бұрын
The 400 size Fathom would be the beefiest baitcasting reel in our lineup, however you may prefer a conventional reel for Halibut as they have a higher line capacity and drag resistance for bringing them off the bottom.
