A point of view regarding a debatable topic.
Topic: Pennsylvania Station in New York City.
This is a story of an American building - how it was built, why it was lost, what is left of it today, and how each chapter has reflected the country that it stood in.

This video is unlike anything else on this channel. While it is a creative change in direction, it's unlikely that anything similar to it will be produced again. The channel will maintain its usual format. So for this one video, hopefully you will keep an open mind and enjoy it for what it is. One guy's fascination in this subject got out of hand, and this is what happened as a result. Thank you for giving this some of your attention. -C.A.

The story is extremely well told and engaging, the footage is stunning, the execution flawless, your argument compelling. One of the greatest injustices ever done to America was the shameless gutting of her railway system. Replaced by dangerous, CO2 belching, inefficient cars that are the highest cause of death in the country and are the death of the environment these days, more convenient that they are. That and airplanes that are about as bad, if only safer. Penn station was a symbol of the nation and its railway system as a whole, and they demolished it for cash. It needs to be rebuilt, exactly as it was, and the stadium relocated.

Sadly, even if the station returns to its former glory, the trains won't. Amtrak recently removed the dining car from all East Coast lines and sleeping cars are being neglected more and more. The entire story of the Pennsylvania Railroad is one inspiring tale of growth, progress, and innovation, followed by slow decline, failure, and eventually bankruptcy. There's a reason why even now, 50 years after the Penn-Cetral merger, people are still talking about the achievements made by this railroad in it's short time as the king of American transport.

I remember the last time I was in NYC. I was on a business trip down in southern NJ and decided to spend a weekend in Manhattan to visit friends. Grabbed the Acela from Philly to Penn Station. Got off the train at Penn Station and then followed the signs to the 7th Avenue exit. The walk up the stairs was magical, as the higher I got the more noise of the city I heard. Once I reached the top, I knew I arrived in one of the greatest cities. Plus the noise and smell of the city was great. I am too young to remember the grand old Penn Station but have been to Grand Central numerous times and maybe it is reminiscent of Penn Station.

What a beautiful video and certainly different in style to your other videos! It also seems like a lot of work went into it, so thank you very much for that! It's always funny to me how many NYC tourists marvel at the majesty of Grand Central, entirely unaware of the fact that there used to be a station that would make GC look like a cheap knock-off. I've always marvelled at the pictures of that mythical Penn Station and then shuddered when thinking about the living embodiment of hell that is today's "station". So, if there's one thing I'll give Cuomo credit for, it's that he's at least trying to partially pay tribute to the original with the Moynihan project, even with all its short-comings (and there are many).

I lived in New York City my entire life, this is the first I've ever heard of the original Penn station. As someone who has been to Penn station (very rarely,) I've often wondered why this station was such a big deal. The most fascinating thing I found there was just how many different trains all stopped in the same station, and often times when I was younger I'd confuse it for grand central for whatever reason (strange coincidence.) But never did I know it was something much grander. It's saddening that I've never heard anyone ever talk about it. I hope they rebuild it so I, and everyone else can admire of what used to be. Thank you for the insight on the history, coming from someone who enjoys history and architecture. Not the type of videos I expected you to make, but I would love to see more of these in the future.

The LIRR is even more chaotic now with construction, everyone huddling around a few small screens to find their track number instead of the large screen above the ticket booth. I’d also imagine it’s more confusing for people who don’t use the LIRR often, as on the smaller screens not all of the possible stations can be listed. You have to rely on your knowledge of what stops are on each branch to get your track number. All to dress up a design which fundamentally doesn’t work. The dark, confusing, congested Penn is all people have known for so long, it’s sad we’re used to it. The idea for reconstructing the original station is a breath of fresh air. I never knew how beautiful it used to be. Thanks for making this video!

Dude, I watched this video yesterday morning on my commute to work, and I have been thinking about it for 2 days now. Such a great job. I know you said that this is not the direction this channel is going to go in, but I want you to know that I would be along for the ride.

This is without a doubt the greatest video you have ever made. This is genuine grade A documentary quality! I was invested in this from start to finish despite never even knowing of this station's existence. I would love to see this become a channel staple. A series on the lost American icons and luxuries, forgotten to many but still loved and treasured by some. Amazing video CA. Good job.

I really love how vague you were in the ending! You told it in a way where you didn't really say it could or couldn't be done. It left us open to both possibilities. This is how you make people think!

This is now my favorite video on your channel. You've made a lot of great videos, but this one is so special. Such a powerful narrative. The way you wrote this, the way it's edited and the choices of music... Incredibly immersive. It may be a very different type of video for you, but it wouldn't be as meaningful had all your other videos not come before. Your point at the very end, at 23:49, really had an impact: "Anyone who makes THAT argument, whether they know it or not... They are keeping with an American tradition." It was a brilliant way of harnessing the identity of this channel, tying it back into your persona here on KZbin, and reminding us that this too, though it may be unusually glamorous and dramatic, is a counter argument like any other. Amazing work. I understand if you never make a video like this again, but I would be thrilled if you did. Either way, I look forward to seeing more from you!

Hey CA, I just wanted to let you know this is an art piece of a mini documentary. It's amazing and I hope you make more mini documentaries like this in the future. Also, if you feel like it, would be amazing if you collabed with mumbo jumbo as he is experienced in filming documentaries and it would be a dream come true to see my favourite KZbinrs colab on a beautiful video

Wow! I‘m so amazed. As a German I‘m used to big train stations in classical architecture. I visited New York once and actually remember taking the train at Penn Station. I would have never guessed that there was once such a monumental and beautiful building on that place. In fact, I didn‘t know about the station before my trip to New York and I was so surprised to hear that it‘s actually the busiest train station in NYC.

This video was a pleasant surprise. So different from the usual, yet still wonderfully done and fascinating. I had no idea about the history of Pennsylvania Station and perhaps that's one of the tragedies of what happened.

I live 50mi away from NYC and there is a train station about 1 mile away from my house that brings me their. I knew about this ghost station last year, and i kinda cried and died on the inside when i realized that there used to ppl this amazing station. This station seemed to be almost like the one in the movie hugo, and it is so sad that this was torn down....

This is easily one of my favourite videos you've made. It has the same vibe as the angry men series. Your passion on the subject translates. KZbin shouldn't just be a job, it should also server as a creative outlet. I hope you always feel free to create videos about stories that are important to you personally, no matter if they are relevant to the channels usual format. :')
