I can't say it will be the best show for views, as this was definitely a cult underground show, but it was honestly one of my favorites of the past decade. Brilliant acting and story arcs all around, with a standout performance from Eva Green as the series progresses.

Please please please PLEASE KEEP WATCHING IT! Victor is portrayed in such a deep manner, he is such a complex character and i relate to him A LOT, i'm sure you're going to love him too! Penny Dreadful is 70% brilliantly written drama, with fantastic characters and splendid performances on the one hand. And 30% genuine horror, with some great gruesomeness, creepy imagery and psychological terror. I adore this show.

What you said at 6:28 about Vanessa not wearing a hat - it is intentional and part of her character. Later she attends a party and she's the only woman not wearing evening gloves. Also, I don't know if you mentioned this but she's generally dressed in half-mourning.

Definitely. The series has its good and bad points - a reduction in budget later on - but some of it is excellent. Also, you can play spot the literary monsters!

Eva Green is remarkable in this,especially her screen time shared with Rory Kinnear.The whole cast is brilliant,and yeah,this is a lot darker and more;much more adult than supernatural.Other series similar again set in the Victorian era are the Nevers and the Alienist,both have short seasons,with the Nevers only six episodes for season one,and only ten episodes for the Alienist.

I am wonderfully glad that you're watching this. A really good show (at least for the first two seasons, the third season is very rushed [as the show was cancelled] and gets a bit unbelieveable in my view). The show has some wonderful dialogue and really creepy/disturbing scenes. It's just a very wonderfully written, acted and directed series. At times very sad.

sometimes it feels like the story unfolds very slowly, with high priority for character development. iam not sure that s for everyone. but iam very sure your will love penny dreadful and iam also very sure that there is plenty to react for someone with your knowledge.

I tend to get annoyed at people complaining about a story going too slowly, so it should be fine. I grew up with Victorian novels, where the story begins maybe 500+ pages in 😂

Adore this show. The premise is based on "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" comic where several characters from fiction in this era come together in one story, using the name Penny Dreadful which was how these fictions were published back in the day. This is not based on that comic beyond the concept. (You might have been unfortunate enough to see the The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen movie staring Sean Connery, that movie was terrible). This is the live action version the comic deserved. You will adore Miss Ives frocks.

Correct, because that triggered a number of social protocols: How you address them, in what order you would introduce them to others, where they are supposed to sit down, if you are of a similar station to be conversing with them at all, which door of your house they use, etc.

I think you’ll enjoy this. Characters come and go from season to season, with Eva Green’s Vanessa Ives being the main through line. Note that _Penny Dreadful: City of Angels_ (set in 1930s LA) is pretty much unrelated, so you can watch that even if you don’t finish this one.

Oh, as soon as I saw the titlecard in yt appear, I thought, 'she's going t really quite like this - yes, it's a fabulously well established bit of cod edwardian supernatural hokum. Very much inspired (if not ripped off) of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. I don't think I watched passed the second sesaon, so if you so decide to watch I think I'll enjoy revisiting it.

If you want to see an amazingly wonderful opening, the HBO show Carnivale has one of the best of all time, in my opinion. The show is equally great. That is until the show ended early after season 2.

I've watched the first season of this twice now, and I did like it better the second time. But I still don't get the cult following this has. I expected a bit more adventure, I guess? It annoyed me how the characters just mostly sit around and we're waiting for things to happen, there's no drive to the story. It is compelling, but for me it's the actors that hold it all on their shoulders. (and in the end, for me, it was just barely not enough.)

So, from what I could tell, you have decided not to watch this series. That’s a true shame for you and let’s me know what you value in a series. Apparently it is not amazing performances, beautiful art/set decoration, the blending and changing of a script, while keeping everything of the story lines intact. Characters that any actor/actress would die to perform. I’m sorry for you decision. I did look at what you have watched on your site and it is not surprising that you have chosen to not continue with Penny Dreadful.
