I recently had a litter of Cavaliers with one Blenheim born at 2.4 oz. We lovingly named her Mouse as she was so small she resembled one. At 3 weeks old she struggled to nurse and our vet diagnosed her with parrot mouth. I fed her with a syringe around the clock until she was weaned. She finally reached 2 lbs at 11 weeks old and at her vet appointment for immunizations the vet thought it would be wise to check her liver function before the pup was sold. It was discovered that instead of liver failure the vet suspected would be an issue, Mouse had kidney failure. Obviously we had to keep her, I would never sell an unhealthy pup. Mouse is now 4 months old (weighing 3 1/2 lbs) and such a big part of my life that I struggle to imagine losing her when the time comes. Breeding has many joyous moments, but also heartbreaks. I will continue to cherish every moment I have with Mouse until the very end, and then I will remember her for eternity.

You are doing exactly what I would do under the same circumstances. I'm sure you already know this, but don't forget that diet is a big factor at this point. Avoid commercial puppy foods, as they have a high protein content, which puts too much strain on the kidneys. And the parrot mouth will make it difficult for her to manage dry food, so stick with a good canned food, or a homemade diet. When it's time to say goodbye to her - hopefully a long way off - you will know that you gave her all you could, including the love that dogs crave. By the way, I too had a "Mouse" who was born at about 3 ounces, and whose diet I supplemented around the clock. She grew into an absolutely lovely girl who never topped 10 pounds, but is living a wonderfully long life in New York City, and she is a favorite of everyone in her apartment building. Enjoy the holiday season with your Mouse.

Oh dear what. A sad story about brave little Penny. But. You are right, there is a saying 'it is better to have loved and lost than never been loved at all'. Yes, although it was short, Penny had a happy life. Thank you for sharing her story. ❤

Thank you for that beautiful memory of Penny , ❤🙏 that is very meaningful for me as I a grieving my HoneyRose that had the Mitrol valve disease and she was with me for over 11 years she was a Blenheim and an Angel ,I had trained her to be my service dog and she was absolutely brilliant, amazing and we were One . She was with me 24/7 from 3 1/2 months till 11 ish years and that was the most special bond I have ever had in my life ❤️😇🥰🙏✨🌈🌹🐶 Cavaliers are my Choice of Dog in spite of what we went through with that horrible disease because of the most unconditional Love and oneness we shared ❤ Thank you again for sharing the beautiful gift you had in your life as well ❤️🙏

Okay, so you got me crying now. But to cheer me up, I'll tell you a little about my special little boy. He was born with a congenital cataract and his retina was detached. He was not a candidate for surgical correction, so he's completely blind in his right eye. He was also born with Legg-Calve-Perthese disease (the hip doesn't form right) and that needed surgery. After surgery, his left rear leg is a big shorter than his other three legs, so he walks with a bit of a limp and when he runs, he picks that leg up and tears around at full speed on three legs. He had a liver issue when he was born (which wasn't a shunt, although we thought it was at one time but a veterinarian specializing in shunts found it was a different issue). Happily, his liver values are always a bit "off" on blood work, but he's healthy as far as his liver goes. He has to do physical therapy every day for his shorter leg. The love and joy this little boy brings to us and to his siblings (feline and canine) is just beyond belief--not to mention he often makes us laugh with his silly antics. He's our "best boy" and we couldn't love him more.

My beloved blenheim female that died this year was named Penny, but she was a big girl for a cavalier female. She truly brought joy into my life, and sadly died at what seemed to be too early, at only 6 years old. I will definitely be sharing your feelings, remembering all the good times and the impact she had on my life. She was my first cavalier, and such a good dog that I think she has turned me into a cavalier fan/owner for life. I recently got two cavalier boys, who are brothers, very happy to have them in my life as well. They're truly special dogs. Happy holidays!

I'm crying now. As someone who has tube fed a puppy and syringe fed several cats, that's so hard. You get so attached but if you're a "good pet owner" you still have to ask yourself if you're doing it for them or you. It's a fine line between helping them thrive and seeing them show they are ready to go. I love seeing all your generations. I only got to meet my puppies parents and not earlier generations. Love to Apple, Bootsie, Boo, and memories of Derby. ❤

Boo looks nearly identical to her mama. Gosh, this one gave me tears. I’ve already been emotional today. At least they were happier tears for most of the video, until the sad ending. Your message was very uplifting. Even with the tears too. Merry Christmas to you and your family. I’m thankful for my own dog who has been by my side. This Christmas is the first one without my mom. I’ve never been alone before during the Christmas season. But you’re right. We celebrate the life we had with our loved ones. Hugs to you all too.❤💚

Your story brought tears to my eyes … you are a true dog lover and a kind and compassionate man … I really love dogs, I have been lucky enough to have had the companionship of 5 golden retrievers over a span of 30 years, I loved them more than most humans 🤔, and now I have a 1 year old Blenheim girl as I’m getting older and can no longer manage a large dog … I’ve been following you for at least a year and find you a great resource as I continue on my new journey with Rosie … merry Xmas to you and Kathleen …

Thank you for the story. I had a rough collie named Penny. When she had puppies, one of the boys, Major, had a hernia, and we were able to find a good home for him too. My last Cavalier, Madison passed away this July. I am 74 and not in good health, so Madison will be my last fur animal. I miss her terribly. She was the best girl I ever had. She could have been Apple's twin. So I will continue to watch your beautiful Apple and how she continues to blossom. I am so glad she has Bootsie. your dogs are really beautiful. thank you for sharing.

Thank you for this touching story! Merry Christmas to you, your human family and your Cavalier family from me and my ruby cavalier Dobby who we also fought for the first six months of his life. He is almost five years now and he still needs some extra attention due to the problems he had in his early life. I have become a wheel chair patient since two years. In spite of this I take good care of him and he brings joy to me. I know his needs and limitations and unlike many humans he seems to understand and accept my limitations. We are best friends forever! My two adult kids call him their little brother and my third kid and they will surely put a little present for him under the Christmas tree. As long or as short his live will be: it will have been a good life for him and all who knew him will have good memories of this lovely, friendly little boy. Merry Christmas!

I'm crying over this sweet sad story, but love how you took such measures to save her life and your attitude about her. Losing our 13-1/2 year old Blenheim Jesse in March 2023 was so hard but his love and life for those years was more than worth the grief. He was the best boy and the center of our world. We miss him very much, but feel ready now to add to our family. Max, our 8-1/2 yr old tri-color says he's open to it too. Do you ever make recommendations of specific breeders or do you have puppies that you sell from your kennel? I agree with your stance on good breeders but having trouble finding a good breeder to work with. We dealt with heart issues and Cushings with Jesse plus Max has a 4/6 murmur so genetics are really important to us. I know it's not possible to do away with these issues, but excellent breeders help reduce the occurrence and/or severity of such. Thank you for any guidance. Thank you for all you do to protect the best dog breed on earth!

Let me know where you are located, and if I know anyone in the area, I'll refer you to them. I have breeder contacts all over the country, and several more around the world. I would only recommend someone I consider reputable.

Maybe you can help me with my cavalier king charles Lucy. She is 18 months old. I got her when she was 12 weeks old. She is so scared of everything. She is skiddish, high anxiety. She is such a love bug. My last cavalier was not like her at all. I am wondering if the breeder kept her in her crate all the time. The other puppies from the same litter were running and jumping, Lucy, not shi much. What can I do to get her to be not so scared. I love in myrtle beach, and bought her from VA. Love watching your video's. They sure do become your children.
