I have had a "Zoey" or two in my life. That's not a friend. That's a sheep and an enabler. Just because she's not actively participating in it doesn't make her a good person. But then people follow cancellations just as blindly too. People straight up make money off of going through interviews and social media posts from 10 years ago, extrapolating and ruining lives, and it’s especially bad when it happens to small creators and when a bunch of lying and exaggerating starts happening. Being isolated vs having community is the number one thing that lowers suicide rates and helps people cope with trauma. Having the power to totally isolate someone at any moment- whether it’s true or not, whether they messed up or not, is pretty hardcore, and recreates a culture of public shaming. But celebrities getting away with abuse without repercussions is also a problem- the people having a voice and regulating the culture is ultimately good. It’s just that people tend to cancel based off of sadistic impulses and insecurity rather than an actual desire for improvement.
