If you feel comfortable putting refined petroleum on your face thats fine. I personally don't feel comfortable using ingredients with such a toxic source. Not to mention that petroleum drilling is incredibly damaging to the environment and is not a renewable source. Also, while a dermatologist may recommend it, a toxicologist will tell you petroleum is toxic, because it is. In the video I provide the petroleum toxicological profile from the CDC which is the the leading national public health institute of the United States: www.atsdr.cdc.gov/ToxProfiles/tp.asp?id=424&tid=75. Here is an additional study on the toxicity of petroleum: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5449197/ P.S. I'm a bachelor's registered nurse, so I have also taken courses in anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, chemistry and microbiology. At the end of the day, you can do whatever you want, I just like to share healthy alternatives :)

Products that are for dry skin conditions often have petroleum based ingredients and state on the label to keep away from fire if using the products as they are FLAMMABLE!!! They also seem to act a lot like silicones, designed to keep moisture in but they seem to actually keep moisture out. Thanks to you Penny I no longer use these products and have much better control over my skin issues 💗

Girl, watching this video makes me want to get back to caring about my skincare again. Once I'm done using up what I have left of my body wash, I want to order Chagrin Valley bar soap again, and I want to try The Ordinary squalane and Heritage Store rosewater spray on my face (I also love the Rose Kombucha face cleanser so I'm not sure if I'll be changing that but if I do, I'll be trying The Ordinary squalane cleanser).

It depends on your skin type and issues and what you like. If you have a fungal acne the squalene treatment is something you want to avoid, but its really good for acne (pimples) and acne scars. Also the ordinary's spf section isn't the best (I think they only gave spf 15 and 30) but they are adding more I think so ya it all depends

Guys: Petrolatum and mineral oil are NOT toxic. There are tons and tons of studies of their efficacy and safety because they are safe, effective and non-irritating. Dermatologists LOVE to recommend these ingredients because they are time-tested. I used to avoid products containing petrolatum and mineral oil for the reasons Penny described until I started listening to scientific facts and dermatologists. No hate, just wanted to spread some knowledge.

You have a large platform and are a young voice talking about action on climate change, which is great! You are scientifically literate enough to understand the ramifications of climate change, and i hope you would be giving your viewers the most scientifically accurate information. I agree that petroleum mining is harmful, but the science isn't on your side about the supposed toxicity of mineral oil and petrolatum. It's like the vaccine argument that because thimerosal is a mercury-derived compound that it acts like mercury. My statement was about toxicity of specific ingredients. And while you can definitely put whatever you want on your face and body, a lot of more "natural" options (no FDA guidelines on what natural means, which is a red flag for ingredient fraud and skin allergens) are highly sensitizing and can do significant skin damage. Mineral oil and petrolatum are some of the least sensitizing, highly moisturizing, and highly effective skin care ingredients out there today. If something works for you, that's great, but your viewers deserve to be well-informed.

@@gracenagel hi grace, thanks so much for your information. I was wondering your opinion on something. My son suffers from chronic eczema from birth, there was a time and point when we could not close our eyes without him scratching. Pediatricians and dermatologist told us to use Vaseline and aquafor on him for "moisture". It's never helped, we slathered him in these & 30 minutes later he was dry and scaly again. We have now found him some relief through identifying food sensitivities and olive oil for moisture twice a day. Do you think he was just "allergic" perhaps to the Vaseline and aquafor?

I’m looking for advice! 🤍 I clarify and deep condition my hair once a week. I wear my natural curly hair everyday and use a curling iron very minimally throughout the week to touch up curls that frame my face. Every morning and night, I scrunch coconut oil into my hair because either it’s feeling dry or I want to give my hair the opportunity to drink up the oil throughout the night. What do you think? Can this much coconut oil be suffocating my hair even if I clarify once a week? My hair appears healthy on its best days but I know it is damaged due to heat damage and bleaching that was done over a year ago.
@gabbym8677

Personally, I do a hair mask with coconut oil once a week and use jojoba oil on my hair everyday. Coconut oil is more moisturizing, but also a lot heavier, so it works really well as a mask/hot oil treatment. Jojoba oil is a lot lighter so I just put it in everyday after I shower and it provides great definition for my hair. But if using coconut oil everyday works for you then, hey, it works for you. All hair is different.

I have a question? I’m 20 and my hair is thinning out at the top like where I part my hair and around like when I put my fingers through my hair I can see my scalp and my hair feels soo thin and I used to have very thick strong hair. But lately I’ve been losing a lot of hair when I shower, I get dandruff even though I wash my hair out 2 times and make sure I rinse throughly, and my hair is just thinner every shampoo I use. I’ve used Garnier whole blends, I’ve used Aveno, and love planet and beauty. When I choose shampoos I try to get them with no sulfate, no parabens etc... but no matter how natural of good ingredients it has my hair continues to stay getting thinner the dandruff goes away but comes back after a few showers and I just don’t know what other shampoos to try. I’ve even tried applying coconut oil before I sleep but nothing happens. People have told me that heavily perfumed hair products are what is damaging my hair but I’m like literally every shampoo has perfume in it and idk if that’s an answer. I want my hair to grow out strong and thick again and I trust you and your hair reviews. Just hoping you can help with a situation like this because I’m sure there are other young women that are experiencing hair loss and thinny. Thank you and hopefully you see this.

sarz I’ve been looking everywhere, Pinterest, blogs, KZbin and the internet got answers but I feel like nothing answers or gives me a solution. Like some people say to medicate and see a doctor about it but I don’t think my case is so serious for that and I prefer natural remedies like olive oil, coconut and castor oil and I sleep in them but I haven’t seen any result and I try to not shower in hot water just in luke warm. I’m hoping Penny helps or finds answers bc I trust her product reviews and I want something that is good for me.

Try not to use anything greasy on your hair because the dandruff gets worse and if you see any white on the front of your hair from dandruff put lotion

This was a wonderful mix of informative and inspirational without being overly critical. I appreciate your ability to teach and explain why certain ingredients are harmful or why you make choices without making viewers feel ashamed for perhaps not knowing or taking the same steps. Really phenomenal guide, thank you so much for sharing!

I downloaded the "Think Dirty" which tells you which beauty products are clean! It breaks down which ingredients are harmful in each product (I use this mostly for shampoo/conditioner). Highly recommend before buying any beauty products👍

I love me some Nivea (only the dark blue line, though). The rest is "watery". I have used the blue tin for my face (extremely dry) for many years. Since I was 3, and I'm 47 now. Yep, that long! Talk about loyalty to a product. Petrolatum keeps moisture in my skin very well, the best that I have tried. There is nothing wrong, according to my dermatologist, with mineral oil derived products!
@PennyTovar
@PennyTovar 4 жыл бұрын
If you feel comfortable putting refined petroleum on your face thats fine. I personally don't feel comfortable using ingredients with such a toxic source. Also, while a dermatologist may recommend it, a toxicologist will tell you petroleum is toxic, because it is. I just like to share healthy alternatives :)
