Kids don’t have a lot of money. 95% of Parents aren’t buying their kids Lego whenever they ask. The price hikes not only piss off the adult collectors who can afford Lego with their paychecks, but discourages casual Lego goers from buying sets and parents getting their kids sets

@@sheepycheeze Idk I highly doubt adult collectors make up the bulk of playset sales. Wealthier parents exist and sets can just go on sale if no one's buying them. If people don't pay $140 for the new gunship, then LEGO can just lower the price. The reverse can't be done as easily.
@xhearthfirex6571
@xhearthfirex6571 Жыл бұрын
It’s both because there is still a very hardened collector community that is willing to pay everything for a set they can add to their collection And Legos strategy of only catering towards newbies that can’t have a sense of pricing because they are new to LEGO. Believe it or not LEGO actually don’t cares about you still buying LEGO. They only want the one time buyer. The grandma who buys her grandson the Atte he wanted. The people who don’t come regularly - these are Legos priority. NOT the fans. You can see it on their marketing and on their pricing and also on their decision what sets to make

When looking at a set, I tend to look at a few different factors to determine if it's a fair value, mainly: - Size of the build - Part size variety - (soft factor) Amount of parts - Amount of minifigures (and exclusives) - Quality of the build - Side builds and accessories - Playability Plenty of the time I can look at and feel it's automatically not worth the money, but I do as often use those factors to determine what I feel is fair or not

Lego's pricing department is out of control, where they come up with huge price tags and make sets to match. Lego became hugely popular during Covid. They're trying to maintain that huge growth and profits but it's going to be a struggle, like with SW in 2020 to 2021 there were a ton of awesome reasonably priced sets to fuel buying.

@brickdarg6750
@brickdarg6750 Жыл бұрын
I don't think there's a better example of the issue with Yavin 4 than Lego City. The most expensive sets of that theme are INSANELY high for standard retail sets, yet they're some of the simplest and easiest to build sets outside of themes specifcally targeted to young children like duplo and 4+. The June wave of sets was already £20-£30 discounted in the middle of August, and the discounted prices are still too much in some instances. They cost adult money but are simple children's toys that typically don't look great on display.
@xhearthfirex6571
@xhearthfirex6571 Жыл бұрын
The problem becomes even more clear if you compare sets to different year. Look at the City Police Station and then look at the 7498 (2011) or the 7744 (2008). Even added Inflation you got a much better all around playability and I mean look at them they are way cooler playing with that
@Gzilla313
@Gzilla313 Жыл бұрын
City has same issue as Jurassic World, the road plates/dinosaurs over inflate the price and makes the builds simpler to compensate. If City sets had no road/base plates the sets would be 1/3 - 1/2 cheaper.

Retailers like Target and Walmart are free to choose their own prices for Lego sets, Lego doesn't really enforce a price on them. They essentially but sets in bulk and choose a price from there. The 80$ Indian Jones sets +40$ markup from the Lego MSRP might imply that Lego charged them more for the set, or they just said whatevs and chosen a price they thought was fair.
@PenPlays
@PenPlays Жыл бұрын
They exclusively stick with LEGO's MSRP, and have for several decades. The changes would imply that was what they were originally going for. Typically, when there is a major retailer choosing a different price, it's only a dollar or so more, or a deliberate markdown without calling it a sale.

The crazy prices has really hit me with the 30th anniversary Lego Jurassic park sets. There’s really only two that to me are a fair price for what you get. And those are the visitor center and the dilophosaurus attack. And the worst one is the $40 raptor escape that is rated for 4 years old that I can’t tell or justify at all spending money on to get. Even if it comes with an exclusive miniature that you can’t get any way else. It’s the worst instance of the “dinosaur tax” for the series.
@ShortRound42

NOPE, you got it ALL wrong with the 753554 Coruscant Guard Gunship. For the price, it's consistent if not cheaper than it's previous Lego iterations. You need to use an inflation calculator to see. Check the prices here and you'll see... - 2002's Gunship was $90usd original price w/7 figs (8 if you count the brick built droid), today would be $150usd. Over 686 pieces. - 2008's Gunship was $120usd original price w/5 figs (7 if you count the brick built droids), today would retail $170usd. Over 1030 pieces. - 2013's Gunship was $120usd original price w/7 figs, today would retail $157usd. Over 1175 pieces. - 2023's Gunship retails today at $140usd w/5 figs. Over 1080 pieces. Regardless of the naysayers on prices. Lego had kept prices reasonable through the years. Just compare almost any set from the late 70s/early 80s til now, and today for the piece count and amount of minifigs, the prices have been much better TODAY than in the past. Just compare price then to today with an inflation calculator and you'll see the difference is better today.

For 10 more dollars you get a ship that is way bigger in 2002. You could say it looks like dogshit, but we kinda expect companies to create a better cheaper product over time. Like back in the 1980s solar panels were expensive and bad, today they are much better. Also I have to say this please explain to me how inflation has hit Lego so hard that they are cheating out on the only gunship in ten years. Plastic costs nothing, and the plastic costs of the gunship were like 10 dollars maybe 20 at a stretch wages certainly have not been increased for workers, the liscensing agreement hasn’t changed sconce the 2000s and shipping has maybe gone up, but that doesn’t make a set 40 dollars cheaper
@Sashin-d8t
@Sashin-d8t 2 ай бұрын
Also other sets are way to overpriced. In 2009 the battle pack was 9 dollars today that is 13 today. And no you cannot tell me leg printing costs 7 dollars. For what they represent the printing still holds up today. Take starfighters. In 2005 a v wing was 10 dollars that’s 16 dollars today. Why double the price. In 2015 Anakins Jedi interceptor was 20 dollars. 25 dollars today. Yodas is 35 dollars. Jedi bobs starfighter is smaller, then why does it cost 15 dollars more than anakins from 2015. You expect a multi billion dollar company to create a cheaper product after 10 years that a more expensive one

Worth pointing out that the Coruscant gunship is closer in scale to minifigures. The model you display it alongside is out of scale to minifigures. Since minifigs don't share the same proportions as humans, I would ask which is more important; scale to the "real-life" model? Or scale to the figures that are going inside it?
@PenPlays

Real life. Especially when it being more "in-scale" with minifigs means they can barely fit inside it (which is the case for the Coruscant Gunship)

I assume its because of the price brackets they need to meet, being to high for what the designers can deliver. They need to make a $90 set but can only make a $60 set at the size they made it. If they made it even bigger, then it would end up being $150, and they'd rather keep it smaller and charge the planned price, than read the room

If you were like me as a child who grew up in a middle class family with a decent amount of friends and family, you’d be able to buy and collect an entire wave of lego in one year. Birthdays, holidays and doing well at school have you enough funds to realistically get what you wanted most of the time. Nowadays you’d be lucky to only score a few sets. The price for normal lego for younger audiences is too high and parents will avoid that for a cheaper alternative. Why buy an expensive lego set for your kid when you can just buy a battle pass or mircotransactions for their favourite videogame for way less? This feels most apparent with something like Lego Minecraft. There’s no need for a theme like that if the game allows you to already build whatever you want at a $40 price tag.
