Great video! Let’s say someone receives a lump of 100k cash tax free. Would it be wise to top up 20k/year into an ISA shares account and also increase their SIPP contributions from their salary to up to 10% ? - considering that employer will match this figure.
@Frazpas5 жыл бұрын
Don’t forget salary sacrifice boost which saves national insurance tax too, boosting tax advantage in SIPP by up to another 12%, so 32% for basic tax and up to 52% higher rate payers. Hard to beat.

If you retire early have a lump sum in ISA to go with SIPP remember if you leave SIPP until state pension kicks in that will take up your annual allowance start taking SIPP early mixing 25% plus topping up with annual allowance avoid tax then at state pension age use ISA not tax to pay to top up this reduces overall tax you pay

Hi Gregory that's a good idea, but there are lots of ISAs and SIPPs and the cost depends on how much you invest. I'm not certain but it may be optimal for your SIPP at retirement to be around £100k (if retiring in 2019). A yearly withdrawal of around 5% + the state pension would equal the personal allowance. Then on top of that one would have their ISA - ideally a larger pot than the SIPP.
@bmwofboganville4565 жыл бұрын
The other possibility for someone retiring early is to map a withdrawal glidepath for their SIPP which takes them from the age of 55 to the state pension age.
@Pensioncraft5 жыл бұрын
Hi Forestman that's interesting. In what way is that optimal i.e. what's the utility you're using? Is it simply minimising the tax liability or maximising overall wealth at the expected survival age?

This relies on companies being willing to pay into a SIPP as they are under no obligation and in my experience they would rather everyone is in the same scheme. For this reason I do not have a SIPP but a few jobs ago I had serious conversation about it and pushed them to say if I open one will you pay into it but they declined because rather than pay 1 provider they now pay 2 and of others’ decide and here in lies the rub. Therefore I use an ISA.

Regardless of age, one would need to put money into their SIPP in order to invest (eg shares). This money will most likely have already been taxed if it is from a fulltime job income. Then on retirement if i want to draw money from the SIPP, I will have to pay tax again, does it mean that I will be taxed twice?

Thinking about whether one can take the tax free lump sum from a SIPP over several years from age 55 cycling the cash into an ISA in £20k lumps. Then when one needs money for retirement take personal allowance of around £11k from the SIPP remains and rest of required funds from the ISA. Then funds remain invested in wrappers and tax is minimised. Need to investigate more!
@Pensioncraft5 жыл бұрын
Hi macg33zr, as you take out the money from your SIPP as lump sums only the first 25% will be tax free. Beyond that the money will affect your income tax situation. This is understandable because the money wasn't taxed as you put it into the SIPP. You don't have to pay tax when you take money out of an ISA because it is just like a (tax-free) savings account. However, you will lose the tax invisibility of your capital as soon as it hits your bank account so it's best to keep the money in the ISA for as long as possible as it accrues tax-free returns. Thanks, Ramin.

Hi Ramin, Have you thought about making a video on Freetrade - it's essentially the UK equivalent of Robinhood in the US. At the moment, the ETF/Stock list is limited, but at a charge of £3 a month, its got potential to be one of the cheapest ISAs for long term investing possible, with the option of buying individual shares. Be interested to see what you think of it. Cheers

Hi 405 Brigade, Homie it looks interesting. They say they make money from charging £1 for instant trades and in future they will charge £3 per month for their Stocks & Shares ISA. @@Pensioncraft They are up and coming (potentially) so I am not moving my ISA just yet, but they have a very slick mobile platform. The stock universe is very limited, so I would say one to keep an eye on until that's expanded. From what you say, its a good choice to choose SIPP over an ISA if your in the higher tax bracket. How do the numbers work for if your in the lower bracket and plan to stay there within Employment sector as other income is either self employed/businesses which has different tax implications
@Pensioncraft4 жыл бұрын
Hi Ahmet ISAs are also good for higher earners, and many people use both. The tax benefits remain in place as your wealth increases so although you may be paying lower tax currently you may earn much more in future. You get the greatest benefit from a SIPP if you pay higher tax while you're accumulating than when you retire so for low earners the benefit is smaller than it is for higher earners. For an ISA the money that goes in is after you've paid income tax and you don't have to pay income tax as you take it out. Thanks, Ramin.

Hi Ramin, Firstly great videos. I am currently in a pension scheme at work (NEST). I want to set up a SIPP, hopefully with Vanguard in due course. Perhaps you could clarify the following. If i pay say £100 net of my salary into the sipp, how do i claim the 20% and 40% tax relief, is that done by the pension provider or me on a self assessment tax return. My employer will not pay from gross salary into a SIPP, as he is already doing that for the NEST pension. Thanks Mangal
@Pensioncraft5 жыл бұрын
Hi Mangal Singh, thanks! The government website www.gov.uk/tax-on-your-private-pension/pension-tax-relief explains the way in which you can claim back your tax relief on your SIPP in your self-assessment tax return. Which Money explains it more clearly: "‘Relief at source’ applies to all personal pensions and some workplace pensions. So, if you have a private pension with an insurance company, or a self-invested personal pension (Sipp), this will apply to you. If you’re paying into a pension through your employer, your employer will take 80% of your pension contribution from your salary (technically known as ‘net of basic rate tax relief’). Your pension scheme then sends a request to HMRC, which pays an additional 20% tax relief into your pension. Under this system, higher and additional-rate taxpayers must complete a self-assessment tax return to receive the extra relief due to them." The full article is here: www.which.co.uk/money/pensions-and-retirement/personal-pensions/contributing-to-a-private-pension-explained/tax-relief-on-pension-contributions-explained-a27f53z7qg3f Thanks, Ramin

Suppose that Adam has a SIPP of value £200,000 and that he dies at age 80. The sole beneficiary of Adam’s SIPP is Bob, age (say) 50, who already has his own SIPP of value £100,000. Question: Does Adam’s SIPP ‘wrapper’ survive his death, or not? That is, does Bob’s SIPP merge with Adam’s SIPP to give Bob a single SIPP of £300,000? Or do the two SIPPs, though both now owned by Bob, continue to exist in separate wrappers, each maintaining a distinct identity? Can Bob choose between these two possibilities? Thank you.

Hi Bob, AJ Bell have a great explanation of what happens to your SIPP after you die here www.youinvest.co.uk/pensions-and-retirement/accessing-your-pension/sipps-and-death It depends whether you live past 75 (if you do live past 75 your beneficiaries are taxed). Hi Steve, I'm glad the Patreon button is looking tempting. Let me make it easy: patreon.com/pensioncraft ! If you're selling your investments and they then rise in value you would have lost out on the capital gain and income (dividend interest). Hi Derfel, if you're starting out it's always best to keep it simple, keep your fees low, diversify globally across asset types and regions. Once you know a bit more it might be worth branching out into a more complex portfolio (like mine) but for most people it's not worth the extra effort and time and hassle. Thanks, Ramin.

PensionCraft thanks Ramin, to be honest I’d much prefer to keep it as simple and hassle free as possible, if only for the sake of my OCD. Thank you for replying and for all the great videos, I found them very helpful when I was setting up my transfer.

Great video, thanks! Stocks & Shares ISA question: is my yearly 20,000£ allowance defined by the amount of money I pay in or defined by the value of the stocks & shares I hold? For instance, if I pay in 19,000£ and then a month later the market value rises to 21,000£ because the stocks do well - am I still within the allowance or have I exceeded it? Many thanks.

Its the amount you put in that counts. Not the growth from what you invested.
@rinakaur7245 Жыл бұрын
If you put in 19k, then that's what counts....even if your investment grows to 25k.....you can still put in another 1k to get to 20k limit for that tax year.

oh wow, this was great video. I just turned 40 and realised I'm in trouble. I need to start saving. I guess if I'm self-employed, I can't do SIPP? Can I? So in ISA i can only put 4k per year? I was hoping to get in there like 10K or so per year. I have also 3 young kids. Could I have for each of them Junior ISA? Is that part of my 20K? I want to invest like £100 per month for each. So by the time they are like 18-20 they have money to put down for house or something like that. Thank you for this great video. I will join you in Patreon, but after the 1st.

No your wrong. You can open a sipp if your self employed

Hi Ramin, thank you for posting this video! I’m a basic rate tax payer and will most likely be throughout my life time. Given that, Is it most optimal (in terms of tax relief and returns) to pay monthly into a S&S LISA or a SIPP up until retirement? (I’ve been wracking my brains trying to crunch the numbers taking into account the tax implications of each but I haven’t been able to confidently figure it out)

SIPPs definitely good tool for pension investments, I was not aware about the tax benefits which you have clearly outlined. Quick question - looks like anyone who is 18 can invest in SIPP, does one still tax benefits if you are student with no income ?
@keithchegwin12223 жыл бұрын
Great video, if someone's dies what percentage of the SIPP does the person's partner get? Is it all of it? It's just that I've been told they are only entitled to a percentage of it. Thanks
@rinakaur7245 Жыл бұрын
You can nominate how you want to split. Your SIPP provider usually has an expression of wish form that you can fill out to say how you'd like your pot to be split between partner, kids, etc.

@@rinakaur7245 Oh that's good, so it's not like a normal pension where the government half and only leave you with the other half. Great 👍

Hi @@chrisredfearn6625 no I'm not which is why I don't give financial advice. That's why I have a disclaimer at the beginning of every video saying "This is not financial advice, to get advice tailored to your specific circumstances seek independent financial advice". Instead, I provide financial education so that people can make up their own mind about how to invest. Thanks, Ramin.

hi ramin, isit possible to invest in both lifetime ISA and a SIPP. and treat SIPP as a pension pot . for e.g. if have 20 k to invest and invest in mixture of lifestrategy funds and target retirement funds
@Pensioncraft5 жыл бұрын
Hi JIIKaurII you can have an ISA and a SIPP open at the same time. SIPPs are designed to be pensions savings products i.e. you can't touch the money until you reach the age of 55. The 20k limit is only applicable to ISAs (in 2019/20) www.gov.uk/individual-savings-accounts and the SIPP limits are quite different www.gov.uk/tax-on-your-private-pension But you can put LifeStrategy and Target Retirement funds into both a Stocks & Shares ISA and a SIPP. Call me if that's not clear: ramin.as.me Thanks, Ramin.

Hi Ramin, Thank you for these videos, I’m a novice in this area and have only recently started thinking of investing. These are really good and I’m specially interested in ethical investments/SRIs. I’m looking at Vanguard’s SRI funds but was wondering if you have any suggestions at all as to other funds that I could look at? Many thanks, Mihi
