I watched Figboot's interview with Neil deGrasse Tyson earlier in the year and Neil made a point in there that's kind of stuck with me: he likes "unique" nibs -- stubs, italics, obliques, flex pens, etc. because they allow more expression. I used to feel a bit of guilt every time I bought something like a stub because I felt like it was an admission that my handwriting wasn't nice enough and I had to rely on the stub nib to give my handwriting flair and interest. Ever since I saw that interview, I've embraced the fact that I enjoy nibs that offer some line variation. Whenever possible when buying a new pen now, I buy something to give me that line variation. In the new year, I'm probably going to set about the business of modifying more of my current collection when possible.

Interesting take on it, I’ll have to check out that interview!

Hear hear! I made two Frankenpens this year - a Narwhal Nautilus with a Duofold nib from a broken pen and a TWSBI Diamond 580 with an Otto Hutt Dsgn 04 nib that transformed four pens that I rarely or couldn’t use into two of my favourites. My new Narker Duotilus and Twotto Hutt Diamond 04 may not be pretty but they are now up there in my regular rotation

I knew his recent tea review was not going to go unnoticed. You haven't done one recently, but it's in the name! If you ask me, he had it coming.

Excellent suggestions! And I go even further. I have 4 Pilot Prera’s and multiple Preppy’s. I love to swap the caps and barrels/grips to come up with nice color combos. Kinda reminds me of the Sailors (which I haven’t acquired yet). They don’t all work but some are really pretty. Also, thanks to another KZbin channel, I discovered you can use a TWSBI VAC 700R nib unit in a BENU Euphoria. I was having trouble sourcing a stub nib for my Euphoria. No prob, it now has a TWSBI which is super wet and wonderful! Happy Holidays to all!

Jinhao 82's also lend themselves to cap swapping, and are cheap.

I'm a pro at swapping out nibs for ones I like better, and fearlessly did so even as a pen newby. I also get custom grinds on nibs as well and just got an architect grind on a purchase from Pen Realm as I really like how their architect ground nibs write.

This video is so on point! My "favourite" pens can switch depending on what nib I am using! Before this year, all my specialty nib grinds were Franklin-Christoph (Nagahara or Audrey Matteson) but this year is branched out to Kirk Speers and Matthew Chen. Having nibs that can interchange has been a big game-changer for me!

1. I had some flex-nibbed pens which turned out not to suit me. So I got rid of all but one, a Franklin-Christoph P66, for which I bought a Franklin-Christoph replacement nib. These nibs are quite varied, reasonably priced, and utterly reliable. I love my BBs. 2. Less successfully, I bought some normal-bodied pens that accept Pilot Parallel nib units, to replace the extra-long, desk-pen style bodies. They work with no problem, but it turns out, at least when drawing, the extra-long handle can come in handy, for longer, more rapid, or more expressive strokes. I should have hung on to the old bodies.

I've recently done this quiet a bit. My favorite was for a vintage Pelikan M600 that I got from e-bay for a STEAL but came with a Broad nib. I ordered an Extra Fine for it & can now use it regularly & still paid less than I would have for a new M600. I'm getting ready to go through some of my less-frequently used pens that I may want to sell or gift to others, but I want to revisit the potential for swapping out some nibs, since the main reason they aren't used as much was due to a nib that writes a bit broader than I prefer. I almost exclusively use EF nibs other than a couple of Stub/Broad nibs that I use for larger lines to divide up a page. One trick that was a wonderful surprise was with a BENU Euphoria that I bought 2nd hand, it came with a Broad nib & sadly, BENU doesn't offer an EF for any of their larger pens (could only find them for the Briolette, or others with the smaller nibs) BUT! I found that if i flipped the pen around, the reverse writing line is much closer to a F/EF & still just as buttery smooth as the "right" side, so now I use that one both for thicker lines on a page AND for legible writing!

you mentioned trying new things like inks, what are your thoughts about trying to hold the pen in a different way, like at a different, higher or lower angle or something to make the writing look a bit different?

I once got a Sailor with a zoom nib which just wasn't for me. I sent it off to Gina at Custom Nib Studios to be made into a cursive italice, noting I like my nibs to write smooth and wet. She did an amazing job on it, which is now one of my favorites.

Very cool minis! As for making pens new, my birthday present to myself this year was getting 4 custom nib grinds, in person, with Matthew Chen in Chicago at Atlas Stationers' Holiday Expo. Got an Uranagi, Kodachi, Beak, and cursive italic on a 3776 , 823, 823, and m805 respectively. He does incredible work! Love your content!

I made a frankenpen using a Jinhao 9016 and a Bock number 6 1.1 stub nib. It was an easy swap. It is now my favourite pen, personalised by me. I bought the nib from Beaufort ink in the UK for £12

The interesting thing I learned recently was that the Vac700r has s Jowo nib in a Bock housing.... Which offers even more possibilities!

I have Pilot Custom 823 in M nib. The pen was only dippef, never used and sitting in my pen case for better pens. I prefer a real Western Medium. an the nib be swapped? The warranty is over, the pen is new. I have the box and paperwork but not the ink it came with. If the nibs cannot be taken off and switched, would anyone trade a new Pilot Custom 823 Medium nib FP for a Pilot Custom 823 with a Broad nib??
@barrettwbenton2 күн бұрын
If I didn't already have a M nib 823, I'd take you up on it. I *do* have a Custom 74 (clear) with B nib I've been planning to sell…only inked it once.

Thanks for this space! I love tinkering with my pens to make them to my liking :) - I have a Pelikan M800 Medium nib unit (very well taken care of) and I'm looking for an EF nib unit. Would love to swap with someone.
