For all of us with Anxiety, we can identify with this song. The 'shadow selves' walking behind them starts out going forward and they reverse and start going backwards. This is superbly shot and their emotion in their faces and voices just show how we feel when we are in an anxiety attack. 10 seconds in when Matt hits us with his first low note I got chills, and when Mitch said 'See right through me', I choke on a sob. I have seen this video over 25 times now and it still affects me

I've been watching ya'll for a couple of weeks, I finally subscribed today. You both seem genuine when giving your reactions and give music a fair chance no matter the artist. Tears For Fears was part of my childhood, Sowing The Seeds of Love, and Head Over Heels are two of my faves by them. I don't know much about Pentatonix's but they are talented from the lil I have watched.

I'd definitely like to thank you for this comment. I know sometimes we both can get a little picky, sometimes right away (most especially with our native metal genre) and get an idea in our head. However, most of the time by the end of the video we have broken out of that. It's rare to find someone who watches the videos all the way through and gets to see that. Thanks a bunch!

The majority of people have heard and would recognize the Gary Jules version of this song. The original from Tears For Fears was not all that popular. The song received a second life and a lot of popularity with the Gary Jules cover and subsequent use in the Donnie Darko movie. The background visuals PTX had in the background of the video was a nod to Donnie Darko.

"Was not at all popular"? That surprises me. I don't have any statistics and I'm not arguing with you, just surprised. I was in my 30s during the '80s and I was very aware of this song. They had bigger hits later, but I would have said this one was popular. It's been covered several times, which indicates that somebody thought it was worth remembering, at least.

@@elizabethsantersero9597 It was right for its time. And they wrote it--that is, Roland Orzabal wrote it, and Curt Smith sang it. Naturally, it's going to sound wrong to you, since the first version you heard was slower! I'm going to have to look up the Gary Jules one; to the best of my knowledge, I've never heard it. Tears for Fears were on the cutting edge of synthesized music; their sound (and their dance moves!) feel dated in 2020.

I have Bipolar depression which is very difficult to treat. The thing with the mental illness is you have to fight your mind everyday. The line I.find it kind of funny, I find it kind of sad, the dreams in which I'm dying are the very best I've ever had. This Line Just jumped off the video screen to me. This is 1 of the lies That mental illness Tells you. To sleep good, to die is better, but the best of all is never having been born. I have felt that way Junior high in about 1978. I have been suicidal my. entire life and in June 2018I tried to commit suicide. Not so much the song but that 1 line carries so much weight with me Because as I have said It is very scary to have to battle your mind everyday and these are the things that your mind Tells you Even though they are lies. I thought I would just comment on that Sort of a public service announcement Mental health. This may not be there placed with But it will Certainly reach A wide spectrum of people.

The song is a perfect embodiment of the times we're living in, it is a mad world. The dissonant harmonies and the video added to the intensity, and it was definitely purposeful. I believe it was meant to portray sadness. They have a lot of happy songs though, you just haven't gotten there yet.

It doesn't lift you up but it empathises with the sadness, isolation and confusion going on right now that is felt by so many people. Often it helps just to know you're not alone in what you're feeling. And many of us are forced to be isolated just now. The first part is lethargic, almost apathetic but from the point where Kirsten pierces through with "I find it hard to take", it feels like a fighting back against those feelings and the final climax sounds like a rebellious scream against them. But after that catharsis, we have to come back to the reality that it is a mad world, at least currently. There's no resolution to the issues in the song just as there are no clear resolutions to the problems in the real world which seem to be escalating. Helplessness is the zeitgeist. At first listening I felt the same way as you did, like it was a rehash of the Sound of Silence formula and felt a little let down by it, notwithstanding it was beautifully performed. But a few more listens showed me that it is in fact very nuanced in the choices made in the arrangement and the visuals. There's no surface in this, it has to be absorbed. At least that's how I see it.

So I know in the last ptx video y'all mentioned that it's hard to know who's singing between Mitch and Kirstie since they both sing high notes. Mitch is almost always singing the highest notes in the harmonies and in general. If you really wanna hear his highest note and Avi's (the original bassist) lowest note then you should react to "Aha!, Singapore, The Star Vista". Kevin (beat boxer) is out of frame throughout the video but he's definitely there!!!

I had never even realized Tears for Fears are the original artist of this song. I automatically connect this song with Donnie Darko and Gary Jules singing it. And Gary Jules version was very, very dark and Gothic and depressing just like the movie Donnie Darko. This fits 2020. I went back and listen to The Tears for Fears version and was like what is this? So I understand your confusion if you were expecting a cover of the Tears for Fears original song. To me this song has always been very sad. I burst into tears when I listened to their cover of this for the first time. And the Gary Jules is the one that saw a dark vision for this song that was originally kind of bright and silly nonsense that really had nothing to do with the words but definitely had a different feel to it. I like the dark version better but then again that's the one I heard first when I was watching Donnie Darko and it was played at the end of the show when everything had just gotten really sad. I feel sorry for you guys cuz you look so confused and I understand why.

Thanks for your honest reaction. The genius of Pentatonix is their ability to find the sound the sound that is the essence of the original and bring that front and center. Whether I like the song they are covering or not, I always come away with the feeling that they hit the sound of the song. They tend to brighten most songs with their optimism and sass but this one they really made us feel the dark sadness in the lyrics. For covers I recommend Rather Be or Somewhere Over the Rainbow (no video to this) because Kirstin takes lead on both. For originals songs of theirs, I recommend you listen to Sing (very upbeat with a video featuring some of their supporters) and Light in the Hallway (which is a lullaby).

That is also a huge Testament to Pentatonix because they can make you feel. I loved your reaction except for one thing. I kept wondering what he (I'm not sure what your all's names are but tell me again please) he kept looking at the computer and that was just distracting but then I figured out he was looking for the lyrics. I am so enjoying you reviewing Pentatonix, you guys sing death or heavy metal and you are downed by this mad world rendition. I burst out laughing for real, you were so right on... it is a downer of a song, but it sort of feels like March 2020. LET ME TELL YOU, I love watching you guys review Pentatonix. You may hate watching yourselves but you should really see your eyes light up like it is Christmas with every surprise Bass note. It's delightful. Watching you savor the harmonies and the electronic voice effects of Matt and Kevin. Kevin is beatbox... and guys he plays cello!! Matt filled in for AVI Kaplan as Bass. There is no replacing Avi. Lord God gave the man pipes and nuances to his bass that well, blew us away. It might interest you to know that Mitch... the male soprano extraordinaire and Scott, the tall blonde way talented dude, and Kirtsti the amazing alto soprano and the only female, they know each other from high school. They have become famous and are still so down to earth. They are there for the music and the synergistic blending of voices that bond people together. AvI and KEVIN in the SING OFF.. where the whole group got their start were called by the judges MEAT AND POTATOES. They are not a band, any individual one of them could lead, they are an entity. We so love them. Pentaholics are major fans and they convert nearly anyone that listens to them.

The original is intended to have the style clash with the themes of the lyrics. It's meant to give a sense of the dissonance and contradiction of mental illness or disorders. This version is based on a cover of the original by Gary Jules that sort of relaunched the song into the mainstream, but as this more somber piece of music.

You guys would probably enjoy the Original Group time period of PTX if you are interested in a lot of beatboxing, and bass heavy work. Kevin and Avi were an absolute dream team when it came to laying the bass and percussion for all the pop work they did. After Avi left they moved into much more of a musical theater vibe. Beautiful vocals for sure but completely different vibe. Avi as a solo artist has become my all time favorite musician. People keep asking what genre he works in because it simply doesn't fit easily into a category. I call it Renegade Folk but most of his fans just call it Avi. Its probably not your cup of tea but I just thought I would give you a little info.

Once again guys, love your reactions and your honesty. Can't wait for your next one, and if you delve to the side of Gaga, would love to see your reaction to 911 by her. I keep trying to watch for your reacitons.

I think it more akin to the gary jules version of the song instead of the tears for fears version of the song. Personally I like the original version more
