Is it just me or is this the best performance of this song? It's certainly my favorite. To me this even supersedes the performance on their Solomon's Seal album. This particular performance just has a magic, an intent, a quiet forcefulness, and ah, Jacqui, that voice. ❤

This is far better than the studio version on Salomon' s Seal and the whole Set Of Six show is the best Pentangle preformance on KZbin. Finally it ' s JACQUI in her prime. Has she ever sounded better?❤❤❤

@Aishiya That’s Danny Thompson, he’s one of the greatest bass players ever. A truly incredible musician. Outside of playing with Pentangle, you should track down Solid Air by John Martyn (if you haven’t already, it is astonishing).

Lyrics: The king had been a prisoner And a prisoner long in Spain And Willy of the Winsbury Has lain long with his daughter at home "What ails you, what ails you, my daughter Janet? Why you look so pale and wan? Oh, have you had any sore sickness Or yet been sleeping with a man?" "I have not had any sore sickness Nor yet been sleeping with a man It is for you, my father dear For biding so long in Spain" "Cast off, cast off your berry-brown gown You stand naked upon the stone That I may know you by your shape If you be a maiden or none" And she cast off her berry-brown gown She stood naked upon the stone Her apron was low and her haunches were round Her face was pale and wan "Oh, was it with a lord or a duke or a knight Or a man of birth and fame? Or was it with one of my serving men That's lately come out of Spain?" "No, it wasn't with a lord or a duke or a knight Nor a man of birth and fame But it was with Willy of Winsbury I could bide no longer alone" And the king has called on his merry men all By thirty and by three Says, "Fetch me this Willy of Winsbury For hanged he shall be" But when he came the king before He was clad all in the red silk His hair was like the strands of gold His skin was as white as the milk "And it is no wonder", said the king "That my daughter's love you did win For if I was a woman as I am a man My bedfellow you would have been And will you marry my daughter Janet By the truth of your right hand? Oh, will you marry my daughter Janet? I'll make you the lord of my land" "Oh yes, I will marry your daughter Janet By the truth of my right hand Oh yes, I will marry your daughter Janet But I'll not be the lord of your land" And he's mounted her on a milk-white steed And himself on a dapple grey He has made her the lady of as much land As she shall ride in a long summer's day

I started listening to Pentangle in 1972 when I was 17 and LOVED this song! This one and Cruel Sister were my favorites. I like how the plucked bass has a watery sound, like the swell of waves. And I LOVE Jaqui's voice!!!
@vaughanrichards74385 жыл бұрын
Breathtakingly beautiful. It's hard to think that such a sound could come from a human being. Although she doesn't perhaps have the vocal power and athleticism of a trained operatic soprano I personally find her voice far more attractive. The melody is pretty but could have become monotonous over so many stanzas. Interest is however sustained by the sweetness of her voice and the developing narrative which is quite bizarre. The instrumentation is also a strong factor. Despite the now dated seventies fashion ( some have likened her to Queen Victoria and Alice in Wonderland ) I find her very alluring, particularly when close ups focus on her beautiful eyes. Enchanting!
@LaughingStock_5 жыл бұрын
Personally, I feel it's a slightly mute point about vocal power and athleticism, though I do get what you mean. Jacqui is an artist who understands the craft and the tools needed to get the job done (to put it crudely!). What makes her so damn good is her total control - nothing is put in that is not needed, and there is the knowledge of space and silence being critical instruments. Watching Jacqui is a little like watching, for example, Glen Campbell - she looks effortless, it's a doddle, anyone can do it. Except, they can't. An exceptional singer.
