Kirstin, Mitch, and Scott did musical theater together in high school. Mitch and Scott from junior high. Kirstin did Broadway at least for one show. Her power voice and way of owning a stage is amazing. Mitch is, imo, the best actor - check out Superfruit’s frozen medley. I like some of his solo stuff. Your Power is stunning. Scott is great across so many octaves and genres. Kevin is like 12 incredibly brilliant and talented people all rolled into one and you must see his solo works starting with Down. Avi, the basso profundo (not many can do that) was opera trained. He is the one who left for personal reasons and to start a less traveling career. Matt was the stellar new member. Totally different style than Avi so he’s not a replacement, he’s creative exploration. Listen for his bass. His rich soulful voice is gorgeous. Can’t call him new, he’s been with them for something like 5 years. Glad you enjoy them so much!

Because they would only do it as a “swan song”. ( back from the spreecast Patreon days) they said they would only do this song when something about the group was going to change. Right after this Avi announced that he was leaving. Some of the super OG Patreon members were super sad when they announced this, cause we knew someone was leaving. We of course didn’t know who

From what I have read, this song was years in the making. Because it was such an iconic song, they wanted to do it justice. Brian May from Queen. posted on his social media a link to it with the comment “enjoy”. The shooting stars in the one part was a tribute to his having a doctorate in Astro Physics. They always like to pay homage to the original artists in songs they cover. They are a very humble group of individuals who don’ seem to have lost that sense of appreciation for where they came from and how hard they have worked to get where they are. Loved your reaction. Keep ptx coming!💕💕

The only person who has left the band in 11 years is Avi (the bass) who left amicably in 2017 as his mother was ill and he was finding the intensity of PTX too much. Plus he wanted to explore solo stuff (his solo pieces are amazing). He was replaced by Matt Sallee. No other changes to the group although Kirsty and Mitch change their looks up regularly so they look very different on different tracks. If you're ever asking yourself the question, 'is that Mitch?' - the answer will always be 'yes'! He lost quite a bit of weight some years ago too and that also made him look quite different compared to the earlier stuff. Scott (tall blonde Baritone), Kirsty and Mitch (high counter tenor) have known each other since they were 8. They grew up in Texas together. Mitch and Scott have been best friends since they were 10 and Scott, Mitch and Kirsty used to sing together in high school. They were called the Trio. In 2011, Scott wanted them to enter the a cappella singing contest, the Sing Off and they needed at least five members to enter so they found Kevin having watched him do his beatboxing and cello playing online and they found Avi through a friend of a friend. They won the Sing Off and the main prize was a Sony contract. Sony dropped them after three months though so they decided to go for it themselves through KZbin and the rest is history! They later got another contract and have made hundreds of covers and original songs now. With Bohemian Rhapsody, they waited for nearly six years as they really wanted to do it justice. Brian May from Queen loves this cover and says it's one of the best Boh Rhap covers ever made. I'm enjoying your reactions as you get to know Pentatonix. Try some of their Evolution videos!

If you getting confused over the members sometimes, only Avi the bass left the group for mental health problems and the cancer treatment of his mother. But every time you ask is this Kirstin or is rhis Mitch it is. Both of them changes their looks often, Kirstin the hair colour and makeup, Mitch more ore less all. Thanks for this great reaction. When Mitch starts the lead (<a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="172">2:52</a>) the bgv are mimicking the piano in the original. They’re following the form of the original like the panning in choir section (<a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="506">8:26</a>). They have tried to get as close as they can to the sound and feel as possible including the mind blowing guitar break (<a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="452">7:32</a>) that he does live without the bullhorn. Glad you like it. Have fun in the rabbit hole

While you've seen Avi Kaplan's video of his original "Change on the Rise" from 2019, he recently released a full-length, 11-song, all original album, and each cut is amazing. While I can recommend "I'm Only Getting Started" as an anthem for the album, and "He Don't Love You Right" as a big departure in style, with beautiful harmonies, to really grab you, check out this solo version of "All is Well", a duet he did with the song's co-writer, Joy Williams. This solo was filmed in a church in Utrecht, Netherlands while he was on his recent European tour. The acoustics of the church enhance what is already stunning. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qX_Nk3R3n6tnisk

Great reaction! Pentatonix is one of those groups that surprises many people. If you want something else that also takes you surprise and hits you in the gut when you least expect it, try giving Babymetal a listen. They are three japanese girls fronting a group that successfully fuses jpop sounds with heavy metal riffs. It'll be nothing you've heard before. My first suggestion is Iine (Not LINE, it's IINE, pronounced 'eenay') and Gimme Chocolate both from their first album. The girls were just 13 and 11 when the videos was recorded back in 2011 (thereabouts). Since then they've done 3 world tours, 3 studio albums, and have solidified their place in history as they founded a new heavy metal genre called 'kawaii metal' (cute metal). Other songs I'd suggest is Karate, Megitsune, Pa Pa Ya, Road of Resistance live in Japan, and BxMxC. The girls are currently on hiatus since last year and we are hoping they will release their 4th album by the end of this year. Each song I hope will blow your mind in different ways. Always enjoy your reactions, keep up the good work!

The 3 on the backrow all went to middleschool and highschool together and one year after graduating HS were on, and won, The Sing Off, then their careers began so crazy stuff. They all met together the night before the show began. There has only been one change in the group, Avi, the bass left in 2017and Matt Sallee joined as thre new bass.

Thank you for reacting to this great song. And thanks also for doing the research first, to hear the original. I agree with your thinking, that you can't really react fully to a cover without knowing the original. Regarding your question about rock music, no it is not common to have the extreme "twists and turns" as heard in _Bohemian Rhapsody._ In fact it is very rare in any genre. The title, though, explains it. The song is a "rhapsody", which in classical music refers to widely variant parts put together to build a pleasing whole.

Great reaction! Guess I am a little slow on the uptake - I have seen this before and been amazed for sure! I just caught on to the homage they are paying specifically at the <a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="621">10:21</a> mark (<a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="305">5:05</a> mark in the original video) to Dr Brian May, Queen's guitarist, who is an atstrophysicist -as they voice emulate Brian's guitar solo, they are showing the perseid meteor to the sound of his emulated guitar - that is genius!

The idea that three kids (Kirstie, Mitch & Scott), the same age, in the same town, at the same school, all have incredible voices individually, and have been singing beautifully together since school as a trio, is completely mind boggling. It's a great argument for divine intervention. Kevin, Avi, and Matt being the right men at the right time is also pretty astonishing.

This song was done as a “Swan song” back in 2013-14 during a Patreon spreecast ( old school zoom) they were asked to do this song. They said as you’ve read above that it will take a lot of time and consideration to take this on. They also said, they’d only do this so g if and when something big was to happen within the group. And of course we all know now what that was ( Avi’s departure). Mitch, Kirstie, and Scott have known each other since ages 8-10. Kirstie and Mitch at 8 for sure, and Scott/ Mitch tend to bounce between 8-10. They met during Charlie and the Chocolate factory for CATS (Creative Arts and Theater) group. And then went they all went to a performing Arts HS in Arlington. A good history vid is Beginners Guide to PTX. There may be some spoilers. Fair Warning kzbin.info/www/bejne/onXbepmtm6igh6c

You do know that Kevin (the beatboxer) has a beautiful tenor voice, and he sings with the group (five part harmony) whenever he isn't actually keeping the beat. Check him out in Mary, Did You Know or The Little Drummer Boy or Evolution of Michael Jackson on their POPSPRING 2016 recording. That last one is super chill, no filters or unnecessary stops needed because you're seeing a production from the Jimmie Kimmel show. You're welcome!

To be honest, I hadn't heard that song before PTX and I didn't like it when I heard it from Queen either. I might get flack from that, but there are only a few songs I like from Queen but this one, never did like it, until PTX that is. I watched this video, and the behind the scenes and the story as to why it took them so long to do it. They wanted to do this song to honor Queen and to pay tribute to Freddy Mercury and to Brian May. I don't get why people think it is so great, however, thank God for PTX that made this version so great for getting me to even watch it. Great reaction. :)

I never got this song's original appeal, either, until I did a little research into it. "Bohemian" because it appears unstructured at first blush, and breaks all the rules of popular songwriting, especially no repetitive chorus as all rock songs of the day had. "Rhapsody" in classical music defines as "a one-movement work that is episodic yet integrated, free-flowing in structure (Bohemian?), featuring a range of highly contrasted moods...." Freddie bounced around in different genres like a cappella, opera, ballad, hard rock, and threw them all together in a bohemian rhapsody to tell his impassioned story... his AIDS diagnosis and imminent death. How else would you impart that news to the world, except in a totally innovative, starkly uncomfortable piece? I hope this helps you listen to BR with new ears. It did for me.

@@kayecastleman6353 Thank you as I could never make heads or tails about this song as it seemed to me to be all over the place and I never did get the message .. unless, like you, one does research about it. I've never had to do that for any other song as one can tell what the song is about, even if it is by the end of it (a twist I call it). :)

@@BelleDede01 Thanks for your reply. Years of post-graduate literature study has helped me learn how to get into the "meat" of good writing (art), whether song lyrics, poetry, plays, or whatever. As you say, most popular songs are pretty self-evident, even if they have a surprise twist at the end. But the appreciation of truly great pieces often benefits from some investigation of their background. "Hallelujah" is a case in point.

They took several years to be comfortable in their cover as this song is (arguably) one of the best songs ever written (began life as a few different compositions if rumours are true). When it was made public Brian May (guitarist of Queen) tweeted the link on his twitter with the statement "enjoy". Having grown up with a mother who was a huge Queen fan I'm still not sure if this cover is better than the original or not!

I love seeing new people experience PTX in its glory. Keep going, your subs will pile on. We are a solid group of Pentaholics. For me personally, I'd suggest "Mary, Did You Know", "Amazing Grace", "The Prayer" (these happen to be religious but they're exceptional), "Imagine", "Mad World", "The Wizard of Ahhh's", I could go on forever. A jaw-dropping video showcasing first Avi (original bass) and then Mitch (counter-tenor) was taken from a person at a live concert with a cell phone, it's "Aha! Singapore, The Live Vista". That piece has a studio version but the live version is 100 times better. It's a little weird for some people in the beginning but stick with it. All 5 members are present but only 4 are seen on stage. For a little different flavor, Scott and Mitch created the group Superfruit. Their cover of "Rise" is phenomenal and "Lost On You" is another favorite of mine. And of course you can't skip Scott's single debut of "Mars". Dig in!
