Yep, agree. They do add a BIT on these big produced numbers. But you see them live and kill it. No, KILL IT. There is a video out there of Mitch hitting a particular note in Aha, night after night, year after year, and each time its the same key, back vocals sound exactly the same. It could be sliced into one song and you would never know. That is the level of their perfection and production.

“I didn’t know the human voice could get that low.” There’s actually a guy, Tim Storms, with a 10-octave vocal range-his voice can go so low that you no longer talk audible notes, you talk hertz. There’s a video somewhere with Avi meeting him before a performance, and Avi having stage fright, knowing Tim was in the audience. 🙂

If you want to hear DEEP notes, check out “Oogie-Boogie Song” by VoicePlay. Their bass is Geoff Castellucci, and he’s a basso PROFUNDO, same as Avi Kaplan (PTX former bass) and Tim Foust of Home Free. Basso PROFUNDO are basses that can sing a full octave below the standard bass range. Tim Foust has a 5+octave range. Geoff Castellucci has close to a 5 octave range. This video were recommending has him singing lead, and going very very low (the “growl” register) and all the way back up to a tenor range!!

If you really want to hear Avi go deep, check out their cover of Macklemore's "Can't Hold Us", their original song "Love Again", and/or their original song "Natural Disaster". The studio version of "Natural Disaster" is audio only, but there are several videos of phone recordings from concerts on KZbin - in one of them (the one where Scott is wearing a red and black plaid shirt) there's a section where you can barely hear Scott singing because Avi's low notes cause so much distortion in the speakers.

Just pick almost any video from Pentatonix and you will be blown away. As I'm sure others have told you Scott, Mitch and Kirsten all went to high school together in Arlington, Texas. They formed the group to go on the sign off and they won. (It's really worth watching the videos from the show.) The thing that most impresses me is that they do all their own arranging and they do it on the fly. They don't write it down. They have a guy in LA who works with them and I think he helps do some of the arranging. By the way, their Christmas albums are epic. SOme of their newer vids are really strong. Come Along is fun and Shallow is really moving and features Kevin playing the cello. Rock On Man.

Besides "The Making of PTX Bohemian Rhapsody" there's another video of this run in parallel with Queen's version, The synch is perfect. I'd love to see Brian May's reaction to this video. Also, did you catch Kirsten's leap onto the couch while wearing platforms? Talk about a potential ankle breaker!

The percussion (Kevin Olusola) is amazing.... They did a cover of Born to Be Wild on the Sing Off..... What he does in percussion will blow your mind. And that was just after they had put the group together, less than a month before that performance. And it isn't his BEST work. Pentatonix members are each amazing, Kevin is a phenomenom.

They performed this live at a series of 4th of July concerts in 2017 at the Hollywood Bowl. After the performance on the first night you can see Scott go ‘whew’ and wipe his brow. They had wanted to do this for several years. They had done a snippet of it in their Evolution of Music video several years earlier, but weren’t sure they could do the whole song and do it well. I’d say the wait was worth it.

Performed live, Mitch does the same electric guitar solo with a plain on microphone 🎤.. 😁 It sounds exactly the same. They sound just as good live, btw, and I look forward to that reaction you said you were going to do to their "Hallelujah" Live, Official Video! it's on their channel, and I don't think it has the same problem with being blocked like these other videos do. Blame the label!

If you want to see how they don't need post-production, watch the cover of "Gold" by Kiiara. It's just them on a sofa with mics and they do it up. If I'm not mistaken, Avi is a basso profundo, which is why his range is so incredible. I'm still not over his leaving. I adore his voice.

I just discovered your channel a few days ago. I am really enjoying it. I can assure you that this song "Bohemian Rhapsody" sounds pretty much the same LIVE. I'm a huge Pentatonix fan, and saw them in concert last year. The only difference is that Matt Sallee is the bass singer now instead of Avi Kaplan. I love the variety of songs you comment on. Be safe and rock on:)

They do all the vocals on their own because you have to keep in mind that they have to also perform this live a lot of the times. They can’t edit their live performances. And since they are known to be an a cappella group, it wouldn’t look good on their part to have tracks overly produced. If you can get your hands on some of The Sing Off videos they did, you’ll understand how their band works a little better. They might even still have their old KZbin videos up. Mitch and Scott also have a separate thing called Superfruit that you might enjoy.
