They did manage to squeeze in "Around the World", in an oddly appropriate way. While Avi us singing "Television Rules the Nation", in the background Kirstie fits in a couple of "around the world", and during the big breakdown at the end, she works in two more. It's really subtle, but there is a reason that they won a Grammy for the arrangement.

Including the cost of make up, it was done for around $400 and it won them their first Grammy.
@janices53894 жыл бұрын
And, if I remember right, it was done between the time they were first dropped by Sony records (that part of the win from The Sing Off only lasted a week or two) and when, after this went viral, they were picked up again by a subsidiary of Sony. This was all on them, no studio help.

No, this was not the video they shot on Mitch's iPad (that was "Moves Like Jagger") but it was produced on a shoestring budget ($400, including $50 for makeup and wardrobe--apparently they couldn't afford a shirt for Avi🤣), and the video was shot in Avi and Kevin's kitchen, and the audio was recorded in a spare bedroom closet. Damn, I love listening to someone who Knows Things, geek out about their area of expertise. It's especially great when PTX is Being Impressive in whatever that context is, and I get to watch the expert get all excited and flustered about it :) Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts and expertise with all of us out here on the 'Net - subbed, looking fwd to more!

Thank you! You're like the only person who seemed to get Avi's base slide. I love it and every time I see it I'm surprised when reactors don't react to it. :)

Loved your analysis, I learned a lot. You are very knowledgeable & doing yourself a disservice calling these reactions, definitely need to be called an analysis.

Ive watched a lot of 'react' videos of this song and this was by far the most in depth analysis and informational video ive seen. Honestly this needs to be called 'DJ Analysis'. Lots of cool information here, and im definitely going to spend a lot of hours listening to your catalogue here. (I also need to catch that recording of Harder Better Faster Stronger you mentioned)

I'm not sure if it's the earliest use of Autotune, but "Believe" by Cher certainly predates "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" (although not "Around the World"), as "Believe" came out in 1998.
@DJSwitchPDX4 жыл бұрын
True, but I think she used a Vocoder, which predates "auto-tuning" as we know it. Daft Punk might have as well, but I don't do a lot of homework for these just to try and keep them as organic (and easy to produce) as possible.
@UserHorologium4 жыл бұрын
@@DJSwitchPDX She used Auto-Tune. He's an interesting article from _The_ _New_ _Yorker_ in 2008 about the history of auto-tune in pop music, and it expressly states that "Believe" was the first big hit to use it in such a frank manner (previously, it had been pretty much a closely-held secret for audio engineers and producers, who didn't want the general public to be aware of its existence. For Cher's performance, though, it was intended to be heard, because that metallic edge is unlike anything else, including a vocoder (although Cher's producers claimed they used a vocoder for quite some time).

That must be where I got it in my head. That's really interesting! I'll have to try and dig up that piece from '08 ... it sounds like a great read!

Allright! I'm gonna start taking notes on your Pentatonix reactions for sure! I'm learning SO much about the technical side of what they do. Wow! I was already a fan, but my appreciation grows with every reaction you do to them! this new info really speaks to why they won a Grammy for this! They JUST released Trailer #1 for a video of their ORIGINAL "Happy".. or is it "Happy Now"? They performed it in concert during their world tour that was cut short by the virus and we were so hoping that they would release it! They've been working on an original album and we assumed it was on pause for now. But I can't believe that they just released a trailer for Happy Now! I can't wait! more original music! it's been 5 years coming! Another one they got a Grammy for, that I just love, is "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" ( by Tchaikovsky from The Nutcracker Suite). It's Amazing!

Auto tuning is older then you think. A retired oil engineer used his experience with ground penetrating radar to create auto tuning in the mid 90's to help with recording clean notes in a not clean room and soon included the tech into some commercial recording equipment that was quickly copied by other makers. The first heavy use of it in a published song was Cher's 98 release of Believe to get the vocal distortion.

Of all the reactions of Pentatonix that I've watched, this is the most that I like. It's not just saying "awesome" or "it's so good" or "oh my gosh", it has the technical explanation, which is very informative and much more explanation of how creative Pentatonix is. And because you are the only person who finally caught that bass slide by Avi. Most don't notice that. I am so happy!
