Pentatonix does NOT use auto tune. The only exception was their recent 90s dance medley, when they sang "Believe" and used auto tune in tribute to Cher, who used it in her vision of the song.

This was recorded in a closet and filmed in a kitchen and it earned PTX their first of three Grammy awards (for best arrangement). They generally stay away from autotune, though they’ve used it as an effect on the 90’s Dance Medley, as well as on a couple of tracks for background effects on their most recent all-original album The Lucky Ones. This album was more experimental for them. After 10 years they proved they’ve got the talent so why shouldn’t they get experimental? Anyway, great reaction. Can’t wait to see more!

Exactly. They don't use autotune (it would be ineffective and not needed in their case) but they do use Melodyne that is a pitch correction tool where you can tweak individual notes. Which would not be a time effective use if you have many notes to fix, so the fact that this is what they use in some cases here and there (more for cleanup than actual off key notes) is a pretty good sign of how good they really are. They use layering (in having the same track layered a few times in different places in the headphones) to get a fuller sound, clean up breaths and general noise. But in general, their editing and effects (outside of the lucky ones) is really minimal.

@@hernameispekka_Rebecca You're so right. Also, pitch correction is really just a time/money saving device. Why bring everyone back in to re-record because one millisecond is pitchy LOL. It is widely used for in the industry for that reason. Of course, autotune is also widely used so mediocre talent can be corrected. But, we've all seen what this group can do even without mics, so I think the experimenting they've done recently was earned. I'd rather they play with sound and effects than get bored and break up!

The Pentatonic Scale is five notes per octave----so you WERE close. Anyway, the costumes and make-up, not to mention production values, are always amazing. (This has led to people being confused by Mitch and Kirstie's identities. It is always them.) Also amazing is the fact that this MV was essentially done on a shoestring. They lost the studio time and improvised in Kevin and Avi's apartment. No autotune! (Except, in "90's Dance Medley" in homage to Cher.) Do continue your PTX journey. Bon Voyage!

The definitely don't use auto tune. And some of the things Mitch can do is jaw dropping. In one of their songs he does a guitar solo, uses a megaphone in the video but it's just a prop. It's just him when they do it live. I like them all but he's by far my favorite

A large part of the brilliance of PTX is that almost any line/phrase, etc., there is more than one person that can do it. Meaning they ALWAYS have a style choice by simply putting a different voice on a certain part. It's why they can just about sing any genre, and it all sounds like it was made for them.

They have done this live and it's...well...absurdly good, like literally everything they do. Their range of styles is maybe even more incredible than their talent. BTW, if you react to Imagine or The Prayer, bring kleenex. They are both among the best of all of their work, but they hit hard!

They used auto tune in the 90’s dance medley during the Cher portion because Cher used it as an effect in the original. They don’t use it otherwise. They do layer the voices in production which is just putting the same vocals with a fraction of a second delay creating a fuller sound. In a few videos they use instruments, mainly cello played by Kevin and sometimes violin with guest appearances by Lindsay Stirling. Whenever instruments are used you will see them in the videos.

They obviously use some production on their studio recordings (equalizing, reverb etc.) - but PTX doesn't use autotune. The only exception is if they use it as a stylistic choice (like in the 90s dance medley during the Cher song). They never use it for pitch correction, which is what most modern recording artists use it for. (oh, and btw Daft Punk is an electronic music duo - this was a medley of some of their most iconic songs)

No auto tune. There are many many videos of them doing this live. Tic toc. has an entire complication of them singing in stairways with no mics. This is really just them. They filmed this in a closet and kitchen and won their first Grammy Check out their cover ( upgrade) of Kiera’s gold. It’s live Avi Kaplan left after 7 years because they were touring constantly 2011-2017 and his mother had cancer. She has recovered and he has begun a great solo career Matt Sallee is now their bass. That is the only change in 11 years

Welcome to our world. A good starting point for their covers/song enhancements is Hallelujah. The original video is closing in on 700 million views. But the live version from their Christmas special is equally remarkable. Kind of a see it, to believe it. Their music varies as much as their styles. If you want emotional: try the version of John Lennon's Imagine. I compare that to PTX being unplugged, if that's possible. Bohemian Rhapsody is possibly the best cover of that iconic Queen song. Also quite a production. Speaking of productions, they team up with Todrick Hall on the "Wizard of Ahhs". Kristin/Dorothy's turn to shine in this medley. Lot's of tremendous Christmas stuff like "Mary Did You Know?" and the instrumental(?) "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy". Be taken to church with "Amazing Grace". Their cover of Tears for Fears / Mad World is a darker genre that fit well with the lockdowns of 2020. Enjoy, and we'll continue to enjoy your reactions.

I think there are like 9 or more of the Hallelujah video's, (Official, live ptx, live fan x 2/3, Lyric, lyric Spanish etc), add up all the views and it'closer to 750 million, or more, it's been a while since I did add them, and at that it was over 700, a couple months ago.

Glad you finally managed to get this unblocked. No, they don’t use auto tune (except when it’s required for Cher tracks, obv) they just do lots of takes and splice together the best recordings for the music video/ releases (see some of their behind the scenes videos if you’re interested in that). However, they can - and do - perform all these tracks live to a very impressive level of accuracy. Do watch some live versions too sometime. In fact there’s a private performance recording of this track around somewhere. Not great quality, as recorded on phone, so the blend mix isn’t great… but all the elements are there and it’s still ultra impressive from that point of view.

Nope, no autotune in this one. Back when Avi was still with the group, they opened with the Daft Punk Medley while on tour. They are capable of making all sorts of effects without it. However, they used autotune in the 90's Dance Medly for special effect in Cher's "Believe." Cher used it in her version for effect, also. If I have any of this wrong, I"m sure there are Pentaholics who are more in the know than I. Even though Jody really doesn't seem to be much of a fan of the techno sound, I can tell he enjoyed the combination of energy and great visuals that make the Daft Punk Medly so much fun. This video won them their first Grammy (one of three). You two are skirting the edge of the "rabbit hole" that leads to becoming two more Pentaholics. What they do is so unique and so is their singular sound. This holds true, even with the advent of so many more a capella groups forming all over the world. That being said, Pentatonix is the group that blazed the trail for these others. They still perform at another level. They have raised the bar of the a capella genre so many times. I don't think any group out there would dispute this fact. Remember, Pentatonix has many songs (covers and originals) that are more serious and solemn, but they are beautiful and poinant at the same time. Continue your reactions and have fun.

The only time they have used Auto Tune is in the 90's dance medley when they did Cher's song. As a tribute to Cher, Kirstin used auto tune just as Cher did when she originally recorded it as she is credited with being the first to use it to modify her voice rather than correct it.

Nice!!!! Loved seeing the joy on your faces during this one. This was Grammy award win #1 out of 3, all of which were won in their earlier career. Second Grammy win was Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy. No words no problem for PTX. The third Grammy was a collaboration with Dolly Pardon of Jolene. The gentleman who left on his own and amicably(not replaced by ;)) was the gentleman with the cornrows. He was the original bass (actually a basso profundo) and his name is Avi Kaplan (pronounced Ah-vee). He and the beatboxer, Kevin Olusola, made up the rhythm section and they are hugely talented. The trio are Scott Hoying who is the baritone, Kristin Maldonado the soprano and Mitch Grassi the counter tenor. They grew up together in Texas. Avi is rising up as an amazing solo artist these days. You didn't get to hear him sing often with Pentatonix because he held down the bass. His voice is incredible, and he writes most all of his music which is brilliant. Each of these members are musical geniuses. The Pentaholics are the most devoted fans, and they will support you on your journey down the PTX rabbit hole.

Avi had the most trouble with the contacts. No, Never auto tune except in the 90's Dance Medley because they were paying homage to Cher for one of her songs. If they use an instrument they put them up front so there's no hiding it. They have used the cello which Kevin plays beautifully and a piano.

I'm glad you figured out how to get this one up. I'm really enjoying your reactions, first to Bo Burnham and now to PTX and am a new subsciber. Since you are enjoying a capella so much via PTX, I want to recommend the other two absolutely stellar a capella groups out there that I think you will also enjoy - Home Free and VoicePlay. I think the three groups truly offer the best you will find in a capella and are each great in their own way. Home Free tends to be a bit more country, but they perform all different kinds of music. A great place to start with them is Man of Constant Sorrow. If you think it is hard to believe that PTX is all vocals, this one will probably really blow you away. As great of a beat boxer as Kevin is here in Pentatonix, I think that Adam from Home Free is actually even better. (Not taking away from how good Kevin is, but the range of instruments even beyond percussion that Adam manages is incredible.) Also, Tim, of Home Free, is one of the most amazing bass singers you will find anywhere. VoicePlay tends toward more modern plus a lot of movie song covers. A great start to them is one of there most recent covers. I would suggest their cover of Enemy, by Imagine Dragons. Voice Play generally features one guest artist in each song. Yet another outstanding beat boxer, Layne. Also, Geoff, their bass, is at least as incredible as Time from Home Free. Back to PTX, I would really suggest one of their originals. I like their song, Coffee in Bed, from about a year ago. And, if you haven't yet listened to PTX's cover of the song Hallelujah, you are missing one of their best. It features the one person who has left PTX, Avi Kaplan, the group's original bass singer. It is also their single most popular video. As other people have suggested, you will have to get copyright figured out. Unfortunately, PTX can be a bit problematic to get posted. In addition to putting some transparent text over the video, reversing the video left to right, or even putting some kind of other video filter over it, something to consider doing is pausing while listening. I know it isn't the ideal way to hear something the first time, however, people are here for your reactions and pausing is very common in reaction videos. We can watch the original straight through outside of your reactions. And, of course, you can do the same after the initial reaction. It will help prevent quite a few of the issues you are having when playing songs straight through from a copyright standpoint.

They're not using autotune as part of the music. I couldn't guarantee the guys doing the final mix didn't fix a couple notes, but it isn't part of their sound the way some groups use autotune constantly. There is one small part of one song that they intentionally use autotune - the Cher autotune piece in their 90's Dance Medley - because it is a notable part of the original song. The little record skip sound was in the score, not in post processing and they sing it that way live. Effects are largely video effects, not audio effects. They do Bohemian Rhapsody and there are a couple sections where they add some distortion to one voice in the studio version. I think they skip the distortion on live shows. I assume they use EQ, reverb/echo and some compression in studio mixes and live shows. That's just the way music has been done the last 40 years or so. If you play just the black keys on the piano, you will get a pentatonic scale. It is part of folk music in Japan and some areas in Asia at least.

I need to make something of a correction of something you said. You said that one of the members was "replaced". Avi Kaplan the bass here who you compared to Joey Fatone) was their original bass, and he resigned in 2017 due to tour burnout, his mother's battle with cancer, and his deep desire to write and perform his own music. While he'd been instrumental in writing some of PTX's original songs (often wth Kevin), he wasn't able to make the music that was always in his heart. He was indeed then replaced by Matt Sallee, after fulfilling his obligation to completing a tour, and has since released 3 EP's and most recently an 11-song, all-original album. If you'd like to see what he's doing now, the official video for "I'm Only Getting Started" from the "Floating on a Dream" album is a good place to start. many reactors begin with his 2019 hit "Change on the Rise", so choose between them or do both. They're both great, and he does all the vocals, keeping in mind that he's no longer strictly a cappella. He makes use of instruments in his music, typically played by himself.

Love you reactions to music!! You should check out the band (The Warning) These three young Sisters (Dani lead guitar, piano and lead locals) (Pau drummer, piano lead vocals) and (Ali Bass guitar, piano backing vocals). from Monterrey Mexico who are highly skilled with there instruments and vocal abilities shared between guitarist and drummer. Thay got recognized on KZbin doing a cover of Metallica's Enter Sandman when thay were very young the youngest sister was 9yrs on bass guitar. About a year ago thay were invited by Metallica to do a new cover of the song on there 30th anniversary of the black album, (What A Accomplishment). Thay have put out a few albums since then are blowing are up the Rock seen!! Thay have open for huge bands like Def Leppard, the killers and were the last opening act for the Foo Fighters before the tragic loss of there drummer 😢.
