Scott's lower register? Well, ever since the start of PTX he has been the one covering the bass line when Avi (and now Matt) sings lead - perfect examples include Hallelujah (check out their live performance from their christmas special), You're A Mean One Mr. Grinch (Matt has lead the entire song, leaving Scott to sing bass). As for his lower register when singing lead, check out their cover of Sound of Silence.

All of those songs you really need to react to, AND Daft Punk. Matt has so come into this own since Avi left the group. Any song with Avi will blow you away though. One more comment though. Kevin, the beatboxer plays the Cello, keyboards, he has a WONDERFUL singing voice, AND he also speaks Mandarin Chinese fluently. He was going to college at Yale I believe pre med. He's ridiculously talented, but most just see him as just a beatboxer. He is so so much more! You can find a great deals of their live performances on youtube. They truly don't sound much different! They are an amazingly talented group!

Kevin also plays the saxophone. He has performed at Carnegie hall both Playing the cello and then again Saxophone. Another fun fact, Kevin did not know he could sing when he Started with Pentatonix. Avi, who's a classically trained singer Complete with overtone, Taught him how to sing. There is at least one video that I know of That focuses on avi singing to notes at one time.

💖Scott is an AMAZING singer with a VERY WIDE vocal range He covers bass when the bass has a singing lead and he also hits INCREDIBLE falsettos. PLUS he is VERY SOULFUL!! I still think you are a theater guy that tends compare "the original" with "the cover" What good would it be to do a cover and sing it EXACTLY the SAME?? What PTX does is use their individual talents and give their covers a SPECIAL something. I see a lot of people harping about mitch being a powerhouse singer. I think he is an AMAZING singer (BUT THEN THEY ALL ARE AMAZING SINGERS) they all have a different, unique, special tember to their voice Scott, Kirstie, Kevin, Avi, and Matt are so different at how they sing that when they sing together its GREATNESS!! I LOVE The King Of Riffs And Runs Scott Hoying💖

I agree with you about Mitch's brightness and tone. Mitch did lots of musical theatre growing up and I see Broadway in his future if he decides to go that way. In Scott's defense he has a good lower register; he sings bass when Matt or Avi takes the lead. The best example of his lower register is in Sound of Silence. If you want to hear a great live performance watch Hallelujah from their Christmas special. A fun piece to watch is their collaboration with Todrick Hall called Wizard of Aahs.

Scott and Mitch are openly LGBTQ and Mitch, in particular, was bullied relentlessly in school. They did this cover because they love the song and it speaks to them on many levels. Scotts lower register is so good he doubles as bass when Avi or Matt takes a lead (Hallelujah, Sound of Silence). The only "help" I hear on the bass is some EQ and (of course) reverb.

Song with Matt as lead: Mr. Grinch. Highly recommend. Also, since Matt is lead, you get to hear Scott on the bass line for the entire song. This is only the second of your videos that I've seen so I haven't done a deep dive into your PTX background, but I'm sure you've been told by now that the Trio (Mitch, Scott, and Kirstie) met each other in/grew up together doing children's/musical theatre. And Kirstie did a stint on Broadway after PTX started to rise in the music industry. Scott doesn't need help with the low register. He's a natural baritone, which you can hear beautifully in their performance of The Prayer or Sound of Silence, and he covers the bass when the bass is singing lead.

I just love when Pentatonix covers a musical theatre song because of their MASSIVE reach. They have amassed MILLIONS of fans but they don't all listen to the same musical genre(probably why a cappella has such a wide appeal). Their arrangements are so clever(respecting the original but making it their own as well) and geared towards a casual listener....so fans look up the original to see how it sounds....and then this song sparks their interest in seeing the actual musical....then they become hooked...or at least have a lot more respect for musical theatre. The best example of this is their cover of Seasons of Love that you just watched. I watched a bunch of reactors really the song and had never heard of it before..then subscribers told them it was from Rent...and so on! FYI- They are friends with Ben Platt and he shared this cover on his social media saying that he just loved it! AND, after this, Ben, along with Clark Beckham, recorded a cover of a PTX original song called "Can't Sleep Love". WHOA- Scott sings lead on the original and these two are more tenors than baritone's....and they took what was a smooth, groovy r&b feel to the original into this jazzy tune and it's GREAT! Interesting perspective about Mitch vs Scott and I just want to provide a different perspective to maybe shed some light onto what I think led them to choosing Scott for lead.....Yes, PTX has MANY MANY musical theatre fans b/c music geeks like us all hung out together in school right? BUT, PTX has thousands of fans who don't watch/listen to musicals and had never even heard this song before(count me in on that! I LOVE theatre actually- Sweeney Todd, Les Mis, Rent blah blah. I had heard of Dear Evan Hansen but had not looked into it for some stupid reason). The first time I listened to this, I did know it was from the musical and knew the premise of it, and Scott just fit the bill for me. Typical light baritone male lead, with a TINY bit of rasp and a lot of vulnerability- especially for a mainly pop group. Now of course, I went back and watched Ben's performance of this at the Tony's and WOW is right! He is GREAT but such a different voice tambre than Scott. It threw me off a bit, since I was so used to the first version I heard.....so funny how that works depending on what you are comparing it to, right?

Matt’s bass shines through and I love it 😊 Kirstie and Mitch’s parts…how they intertwine so perfectly but don’t overtake Scott’s part. Scott sings bass when Avi or Matt take the lead. So he can definitely sing in the lower register very comfortably. He start their cover of Sound of Silence in a low baritone register and does an awesome job with it. They even perform it live on jimmy kimmel or GMA… not sure. You should check it out. My only complaint with the live version is they let a local school bands drum line come in and “assist” with the percussion. And we all know that Kevin does NOT need any assistance! Lol

Be aware that some of the musical theater content is under the Superfruit project that Scott and Mitch do apart from Pentatonix. I know they did a La La Land tribute and a Frozen one. Also, look up "Hip Hop Goes Broadway" and "Hip Hop Goes Broadway 2". And there's a Defying Gravity Superfruit performance too. Also, Kirstie was actually on Broadway. Footage of her singing stuff from Kinky Boots is around on KZbin. Circling back to PTX as a whole, certainly their performances of "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" and "The Greatest Showman" have to count as musical theater stuff.

A number with Matt as lead would be "You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch". Though, I wish you could have heard PTX when they had Avi. He is a fully opera-trained basso profundo and he could rattle your *soul* with his bass. Thank you for covering this one because WOW. First of all. I did not give DEH a fighting chance until you covered Ben Platt's performance of this and then I went over a cliff with being obsessed with that show. And Pentatonix, I remember watching them just demolish on the Sing Off a zillion years ago. LOVED them. But they sort of fell off my radar? So I had no idea they did this and I adore it. What they can do vocally is genuinely astonishing. Such a joy to see them shine in a completely uncompromising way, doing exactly what they've wanted to do, how they've always wanted to do it. I so appreciate your unpacking of pop versus true theater performances, so always time well spent, watching your vids. Again, THANK YOU!

In an interview Scott says this is one of his favorite musicals. If you learn a little more about each of their personal stories you can see how this song relates to them so much. It’s personal for them. Oh, and Matt’s for real.

How about a reaction to their rendition of Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy? It might not be from a musical, but it's from a ballet, which is still a stage production. Plus the video looks very theatrical to me.

I really love this format of once straight through and then a deeper dive on the replay - I’ve enjoyed all of your videos, but felt like we were missing out on some deeper analysis because you didn’t want to stop and start during the song too much. This gives the best of both worlds - good choice :)

if you wanna listen to Matt focused PTX video, you might try looking at their cover of You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch. Scott takes over the bass part though xD

This song fits Mitch's voice so well. I wish he would've had more lead lines in this.

I really enjoyed your insightful commentary. I'm no singer, but this seems to be an unusually difficult piece and I'm glad you were so familiar with it to provide your analysis for us.

Scott is the pop singer so he does a lot of pop things. Kirsten and Mitch are the powerhouse singers, IMO... I think if you watched some of their stuff in your free-time you'd find Mitch to be pitch perfect high note king. ♥ I'm so glad you're reacting to them. :D :D

I suggest give a listen to Sound of Silence for Scott's lower register + Matt's range. There's a live performance on Kimmel Live but the official video is a great watch 😉 I too would like to see a live performance of Waving Through A Window but sadly I don't they've ever performed it in any show or concert.

Marc! I've never typed a comment to you before, but I've always loved your videos. I feel like I've been around since almost the Inception of your channel. And I just wanted to tell you how blessed I was by this video!! I just balled listening to the first round of Pentatonix singing it. So then, thank you for going back and listening to them again and giving your commentary. I really like that because it gave me an opportunity to listen with you, and then listen to your thoughts which are so valuable. And THEN, everything you said in the commentary, it's like we were having a conversation, because I was just like "Yes!" and also and "Of course!" and "I agree with you!" and "I know what you're about to say." What fun I had!! This was 17 minutes of the most fun I've had all week! So, thank you for that, and I hope you're blessed. And I will probably be commenting many more comments on your channel, because I don't know why wasn't doing it before. Clearly, we need to be friends, and we need to chat more. So...thank you and I hope you are encouraged and keep up the amazing content. 😁

There is production value in the editing but, as the editor himself has said before, his production tweaks tend to be minimal, mostly to fill out and smooth the vocals out. What you hear from Matt is what he sounds like. Live performances show this. PTX's edge is somehow having the most gifted voices all in one group. That doesn't happen often. When Avi Kaplan left, everyone was wondering how they would fill Avi's shoes with anyone else. The trick? AVI found him. Avi knew what vocal qualities were needed to blend with PTX's sound, and he searched for it. And Matt is what we got. His timbre is obviously different, but he fits most of what Avi brought to PTX, to maintain the style of the group. One nice byproduct of Matt's vocal style is PTX's enhanced ability to mimic EDM. Watch Coffee in Bed for a good example of this. I like your analysis. Good stuff.

You should listen to Can You Feel the Love Tonight. Scott Hoying does riff in it some, but the cover of the song is wonderful. (And, yes I do like the riffs.)

If you want to hear Scott in his lower register, check out Sounds of Silence. Matt is there with bass but Scott plays in his lower register more than any other performance I can recall. Thanks for checking out more Pentatonix. I’d love to have them write a musical ✌️💚

Other Broadway songs they pull off are Can You Feel the Love Tonight and their wild and quirky version of Favorite Things. If you want a Broadway adjacent video watch Scott and Mitch's side project Superfruit, they have 2 "Hip Hop Goes Broadway" medleys that are real gems. Also their hilarious Defying Gravity cover they made for Scott's Birthday years ago it is delightfully silly. And there's no big "production" interference on those early songs.

I almost forgot Superfruit also collaborated with Shoshanna Bean for "Pop Goes Broadway" filmed in their living room. Scott and Shoshanna also sang all to me.

As some might have told you, Scott, Mitch & Kirstin were all theater kids. I think Matt was too. Avi (previous bass) studied opera. Kirstin is a Broadway vet (Lauren in Kinky Boots, 2018). PTX performed “What is this feeling?” for the Halloween anniversary special for Wicked a couple years ago. That was live, though they had backing orchestra for the event. I know the audio is still around, though the video seems to have disappeared. Finally, here is a parody number Kirstin and her boyfriend put together during quarantine: Good Morning, Quarantine!” kzbin.info/www/bejne/aYCac2OFe9WXidk
