This song is part of an all original album that they were writing in Spring of 2019 before they began their world tour. The group members have said in interviews that the album was about "everything we've been through over the last 2 years". So if we go two years back from Spring of 2019 we've got spring of 2017 when Avi announced he was leaving the group. Several of the members also went through something huge in their life that had nothing to do with Avi, but were also emotionally devastating and brought about a huge change. And it brought a necessity of sink or swim for them. And then we watch them grow and slowly lose what almost seemed like a Pall of sadness that was hanging over some of them. I think Mitch was the last one to come around and start smiling again. He finally started looking happy around time of the world tour and I know I breathed a sigh of relief because I knew he was going to be okay. He's very sweet and kind and also sensitive . He is singled out quite a bit for his uniqueness and I know he said that he feels like people view him as a disgusting thing that they need to keep locked away and look at through the glass like a bug. Something repulsive. I hate that he feels that way . But regarding this number, They were performing this song during the world tour and there's a lot of people clapping and taking turns doing various sounds during the live performance which is classic Pentatonix. They've always had numbers where certain members would be seated making sounds with their hands while singing at the same time. They just use everything at their disposal to create the sound effects they want. They use snapping as well . When I think back to when they recorded this in September it was before the pandemic and they were in the middle of a very successful World Tour and they were having an absolute blast! And this song was so catchy in concert it was easy to sing along to and that speaks to that easy pop type song that you're referring to. I tell you though, I love it when Mitch takes that Sheet off and just throws his arms out and his head back and sings for the joy of being alive! To me this is a victory song for them considering the timing and what they have been going through leading up to finally being happy again and free to feel happy. This group went through it. I love this song and it's really weird that it fits with what we're going through with the pandemic. This also could be a Break Up Song when a person is trying to figure out if it's okay to start acting normal? Can you start dating again yet? it okay to move on now? Definitely has a beat that fits perfectly in a club where people can dance as well. I really, really like it a lot and I like that I can sing along! Their songs are often too difficult to just sing along to. And that's my history story for today's video 😂

For me this song is bittersweet, I absolutely love the song but it’s taken me on an emotional journey. My 19 year old son died of a heroin overdose 10 months ago so for me the song means asking him permission to be happy again. Although I’m not in a place of happiness yet the song does give me hope that I will be able to get to that place some day.

Thank you for watching and for sharing your story. I lost my 21 year old god brother in 1994 when I was 10 years old. He was the big brother I always wanted and I've watched my mom's best friend try to continue to live her life for the last 26+ years. I can't imagine what it feels like to be in your shoes, but I can imagine a world where our story continues and we can all still have a happy and fulfilling life as a way to honor the loved ones we've lost.

PTX was performing this on their world tour last year, but the official release got delayed after their tour was postponed because of the pandemic. For some of their previous originals: Run to You, Love Again, Can’t Sleep Love (the only non-Christmas PTX song to be played on the radio), Sing. Originals with no music videos, but quality live performances: Cracked, New Year’s Day, Water, Take Me Home.

I don't think anyone thought Kevin wasn't clapping - I think a lot of reactors remarked on the fact that the clap 'sound' couldn't be made with gloves on during the Hallelujah vid. I don't think it was a case of people thinking he was making the clapping sound with his voice on this one. On stage he apparently uses slightly amplified pads for the Hallelujah body beats/stomps (not sure where that info came from to be honest) which some people feel is not technically acapella - however, it would be too difficult to make those sounds loud enough to be heard over the vocals if he didn't. Great reaction as usual DJ - always so much technical information that I for one find really interesting.
@DJSwitchPDX
@DJSwitchPDX 4 жыл бұрын
I really appreciate the support! Thank you so much for watching! I did have a couple folks leave comments on Hallelujah that he was using his voice and the clapping was "just for show," but I know the vast majority of Pentaholics know what's REALLY going on 😉

I really appreciate your take on the technical part of the production behind their songs, we don't get that a lot (most of the reactors are more worried about the vocals). I think some fans have an aversion to the word production because they think it detracts from how good they are (some people are kinda crazy). But I think most of us know that it just means that the recorded version of their songs is a little more cleaner/clearer/fuller than the live version.
@DJSwitchPDX
@DJSwitchPDX 4 жыл бұрын
You're absolutely right. From my perspective, what's fascinating about PTX is that the production enhances their performance and supports it rather than cover it up. They aren't using auto-tune (as far as I can hear) or any other "tricks" to lie to us, but they ARE using things like reverb and compression to get a richer, fuller sound out of their already beautiful tones.

Fantastic Reaction! It is emotional to see them together (even if it was back in Sept ‘19). What a stunning visual representation of that moment we’ve all experienced where we thought life was headed in a direction, only to discover an unexpected change was lurking around the corner. (Looking at you COVID-19) The veil of confusion & hurt does slowly, eventually slip off and with it the guilt that might try to linger, allowing us to embrace a new direction, a new adventure, a new relationship, to find color in life again.... and be happy! Well done PTX. Well done.

Great react. Thanks. Metaphorically, Mitch starting in a sheet represents not only the last few years but goes back to his childhood. He was bullied in school constantly because of his lifestyle. Mitch consequently became extremely shy. He wanted to quit the Sing Off because of his abject shyness. Probably wanted to "disappear" like a ghost. Scott, Kirstin, and He are BFF and have supported each other from that time. When Mitch discarded the ghost it was extremely bright, colorful, and happy, He was singing "Now, no more holding back, left that in the past". I don't believe he is shy anymore. He's Happy Now.

Bowie is a great singer but his voice was not his primary asset as far as I'm concerned. His look and his songwriting and his versatility as a performer overall made him special. Mitch really has chops almost no other singer can match, and on top of it he has the unique voice. Not everyone can be Freddy Mercury that doesn't mean they aren't great singers. Mitch can be Freddy. Bowie I dont' think could have sung most of Freddy's stuff. Adam Lambert has it of course. But it's rare. I do think if Mitch wanted to he could have an amazing solo career and create groundbreaking something or other, like Bowie did.

Another interesting period of time spent listening to your take. My ears pricked up at the Bowie reference because I have been coming around to the comparison myself since Bowie is the only other performer I know who is such a chameleon and of course I lived through the transformations in real time as they occurred so the element of surprise was immediate. The distinction I would make is that Bowie's transformations were into different characters to actually hide himself behind whereas with Mitch it's to show more of himself. I agree that not just Mitch but every member of Pentatonix has more range than Bowie although with songs like "Wild is the Wind" he could push himself but that doesn't matter to me. My favourite singer of all will always be Billie Holiday who had a limited range but her technique allowed her to pack so much into that range that it it only really becomes apparent when you listen to her analytically (and who does that with Billie Holiday?) and I feel the same applies to Bowie. Oh and by the way, a personal thank you for not , as far as I can remember, having used the word "shined" that I hear even news broadcasters use. I enjoy the evolution of colloquial language because it's so colourful and can express things that more traditional words would render tame but that particular form of laziness drives me crazy (it's not much of a drive for me, I could walk there) because it's clumsy. The word "shone" exists for a reason. Is it obvious yet that I'm British (though not English)? Oops, I went off on one again. Whoda thunk it?

@DJSwitchPDX 4 жыл бұрын
Ha! Well, after a year as a music major, I switched to English/Journalism. It's been a few years and I have few bad habits, but "shined" vs "shone" isn't completely foreign to me, and I'm quite confident in the difference between affect and effect, I assure you 😉

Are you aware of Billie's "reincarnation"? She's the young Norwegian vocal prodigy, Angelina Jordan. Her grandmother played the jazz classics for her practically from birth and she has a special affinity for Billie. Her acapella rendition of "I'm a Fool to Want You" solidified her entry into Norway's Got Talent when she was just 7, where she also sang "Gloomy Sunday". In her (typically benefit) concerts she frequently sings "All of Me" and "Cheek to Cheek". All of these in the Billie Holiday style. She does have incredible range however. She's 14 now and pushing five octaves. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pqbPaayDe7aZgJI

@@stevek5332 Hi. Just noticed your reply. I've seen her name crop up and noticed her catalogue does include some Billie Holiday songs but never listened because I'm very critical of covers of Billie's songs although there have been a few artists that have done some of her songs and made it work. It works with them because they don't try to sound like her. Etta James album Mystery Lady which is all Billie Holiday songs comes to mind and works unexpectedly well. There's also a singer called Madeleine Peyroux who only covers a few of her songs but in everything she sings I hear traces of Billie that I like. Seeing how you describe Angelina Jordan I will certainly check her out. Thanks.

If you want to see something with just Kevin, he does amazing covers where he plays instruments, beat boxes and sings with looping and layers to make a whole song right in front of you. Never fails to amaze me. I have a whole play list of Linsey Sterling and Pentatonix with Kevin's work mixed in that I play on shuffle at work. I can only have one headphone , but I can tune out so much warehouse noise and focus on the work I'm doing at my desk. I have others I enjoy and like to mix in, but their amazing vocals never get old for me. 🙂. I am not a pop music fan and love their versions of songs I didn't like in the radio. Another original feel good song of theirs that you should check out is Sing. Or an Edm style original song is love again. I’d love to see your take on either of those songs. Btw they may put some production in when recording in the studio but they will never do anything that they can’t replicate live. Proof of this one is that they were performing this song on their last tour that they had to cut short. They’ve been sitting in this release for awhile. The video was filmed almost a year ago. I think it was originally to be the 1st release off of their original album but because of covid and not being able to tour to promote it they have to come up with other ways to get the new originals out there. Btw who ever thought Kevin was making the clapping sounds with his mouth? He’s so very obviously clapping. Besides hallelujah and this one he also claps in Sound Of Silence. Another one worth checking out. I think they’ll blow you away. Plus you get more Kirstie and Matt on that one.

You're right that it's called almost the same thing in theatrical production and lighting, but instead of "spot color" - because "spot" is a term used for spotlights - it's called a "key light" - the main source of illumination for your main subject.
@FarashaSilver
@FarashaSilver 4 жыл бұрын
PTX is using a few different lighting techniques and post-production effects here. You mentioned the backlight behind Kevin and Matt, which serves to throw the subject in shadow from behind, but in this case they've also used front lighting to make sure the subject isn't lost. Mitch I think was lit primarily from below while he was under the sheet, because white fabric refracts light around and can look like it's glowing when lit from below. It's pretty cool to get to nerd out about lighting techniques in your comments, thanks for mentioning it!

Soooooo Happy Now that you reacted to this one!!!! See what I did there, yep I'm corny🤣 Wasn't sure if you would. Now that you have, definitely check out Sing. They do the anthemic positive get up & move originals sooooooo well! And the video has tons of cameos by Pentaholics & celebrities! I agree this one should hit radio!!! Their other original Can't Sleep Love was the only song of theirs to hit radio that wasn't on a Christmas album. If you want an original that grabs the heart strings....& pure vocals.....Kevin sings 100% beginning to end in full harmony, check out Run To You. It's breathtaking❤💜💛💙💚 Written by Avi & Kevin. I also love their original called New Years Day & you can catch that one of them performing live....its so good and you can feel the energy in the room with them. They have an original called Love Again that is very much sonically & stylistically sort of an homage to Daft Punk. Like them saying, the medley was our interpretation, now here is our creation. If that makes any sense. Lol. But love that you did this one!! I so need you to react to their version of Say Something because it heavily features Kirstie, or Evolution of Rihanna!! Im anxious for your input as a DJ of how their transitions are.....especially since it's live.....them sitting in front of mics all on the same couch. It's not just a few songs it's literally her catalogue. And their cover of Kiiara's Gold......I know that one will floor you. Because again, live sitting down with mics......Mitch literally Mitch slaps you when he does the hook seemlessly.......I dont need to tell you the amount of production that went into the original to know that THAT is impressive. Then again, Mitch is a chameleon like you said. Not just fashionably, but vocally. They all are, but Mitch & Kevin are the ones where the sounds that come out make you really question aliens.....lol.

To me this song is a result of a time that you lose someone, and in the beginning you become a ghost of your self (Mitch in the white Shear) but you finally move on, and as you are starting to ask, is it ok to be happy now, and then you finally break through and you allow yourself to be Happy Now, me, myself and I. This is a strong and loving song! I have lost 2 loves through my life and each time I have held on to missing them, and I did not realize I was still holding onto the hurt until this song, and it allowed me to let it go, and start back on my road to being Happy Now

Mitch is better than Bowie hands down. I think they were/ are both ahead of their time. I don’t think Mitch would be who he is without Scott. Scott has pushed him and let him be free. Scott saw at 19 what we all see now, that Mitch is a genius. His control and ability to switch with ease from chest, head and mix voices is phenomenal. His tone is just there. I think Scott, Kevin and Mitch all have perfect pitch.

I hadn't picked up on the message from this song, but I agree with you on that. Also, I agree with you on the David Bowie thing. As awesome of a performer as he was, I think Mitch has the better tone and range. Also, it is nice to see them all happy again. I could really tell, over the past couple of years, that Avi's departure really hit them hard. Matt was the only one really smiling. But as each video came out, you could see each one getting back to their groove, and I think they have finally found the sound they needed to match up with the talent that Matt brings. Of course it is different than Avi, and it took me a while to get used to it, but with the past couple of videos, I would say that PTX is back. Thank you for doing what you do too. Thank you for your reaction/analysis - very informative! I appreciate that you take the time to explain the technicalities that many of us don't easily pick up on (or at all). I'd love to see you react to more of their original material, which is just as diverse as their covers. There aren't many music videos for their 2015 original album, unfortunately, but if you don't mind reaction to the audio only, the tracks are all on YT. There are music videos for Sing and Can't Sleep Love, as well as for older originals like Run to You (speaking of heartstrings... :)) and Love Again. Off their 2015 album, I recommend Rosegold (!), New Year's Day (more happy vibes), Water (where Kirstin really shines) and Cracked. There's also a brilliant recording of (part of) their Popspring 2016 (Japan) performance featuring Cracked, Can't Sleep Love and Water as well as their Evolution of Michael Jackson. As a bonus, this video also highlights just how very good they are live.
