Pentatonix is the master of vocal theatrics, maybe next to Dimash. But for a whole group to be so stunning without drowning each other out is ridiculously impressive.

All-time favorite Christmas song since I was a kid. Thank you, Peter. I hadn't noticed the non-standard suspension in the start of the song. I also agree that, yes, the part with the, as you called it, "fake out" was cool, but I hadn't really paid attention, not the way you can, to WHY it was cool. If you're looking for some bassy fun, just something to enjoy and have a really good time with, check out Scott Hoying I'ma Tell Yer Mamma On Ya, if you haven't already seen it. I think you'll gain a new appreciation for Scotts lower range. I know I did.

Nothing about Kirstin's amazing held notes at the end, just before Scott's near-whisper solo finale? She sounds so totally filled with religious exaltation. Note that for the most part she and Mitch are using their strong mid-ranges here, so that the gut-feel is power rather than the silvery delicacy that they both often display (see, for example, Pure Imagination/Christmastime Is Here).
@edsartistry Жыл бұрын
PTX is so good with the emotions of a song. And they ALWAYS take you for a ride. Love Matt's part, so soulful and powerful. Mitch... wow... is so ... clean, clear and EPIC ! Kirstie angelic, love her lower register and of course her sense of style (clothing) and ...my, my, her vibrato is just other worldly. Yehhhhh, WOW, Scott ! The emotions, dang Dude!! Yup, their usual "rollercoaster ride". ! Love Scott's grit and belting. Then Kirstie and Mitch come in with those high notes in combination and just send you rocketing into outer space. OMG !!! Could we want for anything more!?!?! WOW ! What a performance, as always. Thank you Peter, love your reactions and breakdown and can't wait until next year. For now, Have a very Merry Christmas ! and hope you get to take a little well deserved time off to celebrate.

I was so excited to see your reaction to Pentatonix again. I LOVE your reactions as they are so informative. I loved your interview with Matt who really impressed me when I saw them live in May. He and Kevin are awesome together. I genuinely think their relationships are what makes the Pentatonix magic. They are so tight - it's genuinely a family. I think they are all unbelievable vocal talents but I will always fangirl for Mitch. He has a truly unique, once-in-a-generation voice. Excellent reaction as always! Your detailed musical reaction is valuable information. This is in the top 5 Pentatonix performances of all time to me. ❤. They all shined. They all supported each other fabulously when they shined. Their harmonies and emotions shine through. They are at the top of their game. They are on a great path for 2024. Scott’s start. Wow for Matt. Mitch and Kirstie shined and back vocals were amazing. Kevin slayed it. And that end from Kirstie gave me goosebumps. The swirling visuals of them all at the end takes it to a new level. In my opinion the silence at the start shows them reverently taking place to sing this praise. ❤❤❤❤❤

Love the analysis. I’m sitting here in June and enjoying this song no matter the season. I’m a longtime PTX fan, since the first night on Sing Off. I love their artistry in all its variations. This arrangement really does give you that push pull feel throughout the entire song. I like the bookend silent seconds in the video. The vocals were stunning and the arrangement really allowed everyone to give us both softly beautiful and powerful moments throughout the song. Kirstie’s belt at the end was powerful as was the surrounding background vocals. One of the things I love about PTX is how they make me feel, when they sing. The emotions they convey in their performances are one of their great strengths. I listened to Matt’s interview and have recommended it on several other channels. It was a wide ranging interview that gave me a greater understanding of Matt’s background and his commitment to his performances. Matt is such a good fit for PTX vocally and personality wise.

I like the suspension at the start of the second verse. Talking about how the World lay, for a long time, "in sin and error pining." The lyrics talk about ongoing unresoved dissonance of the world, and the music reflects that. I absolutely adore when composers do stuff like that.

About PTX bass parts. I've always thought that one reason PTX arrangements don't usually call for super deep bass parts is that it can throw off the sound of the arrangement. The same reason Scott shows restraint in where and when he adds riffs, and Mitch doesn't always sing his highest notes. In terms of entertainment, it can be fun to hear a super-deep bass note, but it's distracting from the overall effect of the arrangement. So it's a musical choice.
