Other than their stellar vocals individually, and how good they are at blending them, what I love about Pentatonix is that they are good kind humans devoted to supporting one another, and devoted to their individual families. They are very good at keeping their egos out of it, remaining humble and appreciative, and make all their choices to support the music, (because they are self-proclaimed choir nerds). I love that they all write original music and arrange, together, separately, and collaboratively. I love how complex they can get, and how fantastic they sound pared down. I love how they interact with their live audiences keeping it very personal while having a supremely polished show. I love their consistency. I love that they continue to stretch as artists. I love how diverse they are, musically, and that they each take on side projects to feed their individual artistic goals. Lastly, I love how they spread so much joy, keeping the energy they put out into the world positive.

For me, personally Pentatonix is my favourite. They have the full package and it’s not one person. It’s the coming together of people who all are brilliant solo artists, to make something more than the sum of its parts. I enjoy the Mitch slap moments, the rumble of the bass from Matt (and the beautiful heartfelt moments like in OHoly Night), or the unmatched low notes of Avi, the soaring voice and harmonies of Kirstie, the nonstop genius of Kevin, his beats, singing, playing and just general positivity is out of this world. Then there’s Scott. Doesn’t matter if he has the lead, or is supporting any of the harmonies with his incredible range, or slotting in the middle to fill out the sound, his obvious joy and passion drive the group ever higher. Not forgetting Ben Bram and all the team that goes into making them sound amazing. Their arrangements are stunning. We have seen them in stairwells, in churches, in bathrooms 😂 they don’t need to prove anything, they are one of the reason this genre of music is so popular.

I love the harmonies, love the arrangements, but I particularly love them as human beings. It's been a rare pleasure watching them literally grow up over the years. They are so generous, sharing so many shorts and behind the scenes looks at their process. They love what they do and it shows.

They perform this live and verses 6 to 12 are insane. What I like about Pentatonix is that they truly do what is best for the song both in arrangement to make it their own and for assigning singing parts. They also give back to fans with all sort of bts and video clips and access to their lives and process. They are all very nice people because you could not fake it this long. They do VIP ( and have for years) before concerts and Kevin is particularly open and friendly. I also think they appreciate each other as artists and like to see each other shine. Happy Holidays to you! I enjoy your reactions

The synergy is making PTX for me so special. The big arrangements are even with the smaller but more emotional songs ... because the connection, respect between this 5 talented musicians and the fact that everithing they do is serving the song.

Great reaction. Thank you. Pentatonix just ended their Christmas tour on December 22nd so you've missed out for 2024. I didn't get to attend either but I watched fan videos from several concerts. It was amazing. It was an arena tour. They sold out Madison Square Garden November 26th. They seem so amazed by that. The also sold out an over 18,000 concert stop in Fargo recently.

Hands down my pick for the best is Pentatonix. The reason I believe that is because they've been together so long, almost 12 years. And in that time they have improved immensely, individually and together. They are so professional and diligent to their craft. It makes a difference when I listen. Happy holidays.

The group does the arranging themselves, making a general plan then improvising different harmonies, styles, etc. Kevin comes up with the percussion, and IMO you are right that his contributions are a huge part of why their sound is so popular. When they get something they like, they send a recording to their "sixth member" Ben Bram, who is an experienced a capella arranger / producer. He tweaks it, makes sheet music and there may or may not be further discussion and revisions. When they get a Grammy for their arrangements all six of them win.

From what I recall, they'll often test things out to see which voice fits best for a bit. There's no ego's clashing and demanding the spotlight, but instead it's about what is best overall.

Totally agree with you on the subject of Kevin , he's truly a one off ! I can't think of anyone with as many attributes as this guy has. He started playing piano aged 4 , cello aged 6 and tenor sax aged 10 . He speaks several languages including fluent Mandarin Chinese and taught himself to beatbox whilst playing the cello, composes and arranges songs , and , he also passed the pre-med program at Yale before deciding to concentrate on his music ! The fates were in alignment when Pentatonix saw him cello-boxing in a viral you tube video (whilst still at Yale) and he agreed to join them . Highly recommend the live at Vevo studio's recording of Seals 'Kiss From A Rose' to see Kevin fully showing what he's capable of , and 'O Holy Night' from last Christmas to see how the whole group's voices have matured to even greater levels .

I always imagine that this song takes place in medieval times around a royal court... ladies dancing, lords a leaping, etc. In my mind's eye, the singer is a lady of the court. Her true love is providing her with all of the things that a courtly lady would need to survive. Partridge, turtle doves, French hens, geese and goose eggs (remember, they're laying) are all pretty tasty if done right. If you've ever had scrambled goose eggs (egg), you won't want to go back to regular scrambled chicken eggs, again. Then,. there's the maids bringing in milk from the royal barns. The calling birds refer to song birds that can be either caged or placed in the garden for a pleasant sound. The drummers and pipers provide music for the dance where the 12 lords are leaping as part of the dance with the 11 ladies dancing. the 12th lady for the 12th lord a leaping is the woman singing the song. Oh, and the 5 gold rings represent him providing her of his wealth,. Every courtly lady needs to have an expense account. Whoever this lady is, her true love is really stuck on her to give her all of these extravagant gifts. Oh, and don't ask me what the swans a swimming are for. They are kind of fun to watch, though. I really like to hear groups like Pentatonix and other acapella groups harmonize. My least favorite Christmas sone is, "Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer." Merry Christmas, Nick! I hope you have a most wonderful and joyful holiday!

I love all of them. They are such a unique collection of voices and yet, they make those differences work wonderfully together. Amazing. I usually pay extra attention when Scott sings. He is the balance point between the ridiculously high voices and the equally ridiculously low voices. I don’t think he get enough recognition for that. I also listen for Kevin’s trumpet sounds and Kirstin’s belt. Marvelous.
@the_petty_crockerАй бұрын
When it comes to covers, what sets PTX apart for me is that, like Kelly Clarkson, their version is always an upgrade. The arrangement is more complicated, the vocals are (usually) more difficult, and often they present a song the way I've always felt it should have been done. I've never listened to one of their covers and been disappointed. I may not always necessarily like it more than the original, though I often do, but it always pulls outs different tones and textures and thoughts and appreciation for the song. And as excellent as their voices are, they're never over the top. They sing the hell out of a song while letting it stand on its own. That's a rare balance.
@RibombeeTeacherАй бұрын
Pentatonix makes some of the best arrangements of any acapella group in the world. They have incredible vocalists across all ranges and they make everything work so effortlessly. You're almost so mesmerised by how good it is you almost forget how complex their arrangements are. That's what really sells Pentatonix for me.

I love all of them, I agree that Kevin is very important to Ptx, with the beatbox or playing cello, and both, but for me they are two things that I like more, is the versatility that they have, and Kirstin, because of the most important acapella groups Home Free, Voice Play and Pentatonix, is the only one that has a female voice, and a great voice, love the way she sings, and what she bring to the band, she and Micth could switch so much, and so many people dosent know how is sings, and also their friendship, they are a family and you could feel it, all of them are give time to shine

I love the moment in most of their pieces, usually near the end, where they soar in harmony, each giving, at the same time, their version of the particular sentence or phrase, and just go for it (eg: Mary Did You Know, Imagine, etc). My heart almost stops each time I listen to it. Can there be any higher praise for a piece of music? ❤❤PTX

By far My Favorite musical group !! Second best is Home Free, another a cappella group. Their level of mastery, the arrangements, the cohesiveness of their voices, the flow of their sound, the professionality of the group, the fact that there are only 5 people and make the rich, full sounds of a full band, and so much more. They are so far ahead of any other group in the music world. They seem to do a lot of things in their own way and so " out of the box" of normalcy. They break a lot of "traditional" rules and no one questions it. They bring a much higher level of professionalism and talent. They are on a level of their own, and they seem to be very humble about their quick rise to stardom. They are God blessed people and I pray they stay humble, kind and selfless. Thanks for this reaction Nick. Keep up the great work, and Merry Christmas.

Pentatonix History…..composed by Alan Freeman updated by Perry Stevenson They won The Sing Off in 2011. They made a guest starring appearance on America′s Got Talent as non−competitors a couple of years after that. The founding members are:- Scott Hoying (tall blond guy, natural baritone but has an impressive five−to−six octave range, can go all the way up to high tenor and down to bass, sings the bass lines when the usual bass singer takes the lead); Kirstin "Kirstie" (Rhymes with "Thirsty") Maldonado (the only female member, natural mezzo soprano, but can go down to low alto and as high as upper soprano, also can sing in whistle notes that are off the scale); For a time in 2018 between the group’s tours, had the female lead on Broadway in the production of “Kinky Boots”. Mitch Grassi (a true contra−tenor, can hit high notes in his chest voice with ease and go WAY higher in his falsetto, also with ease); Avriel "Avi" Kaplan (dark beard and long hair), true basso profundo, trained as an opera singer, also can go up into the tenor range; and Kevin "KO" Olusola (beatboxer extraordinaire, also is a world−class cellist who plays cello on some of their songs, has a beautiful high tenor voice and gets occasional lead vocal solos as well, graduated pre−med from Yale and speaks several languages including Mandarin Chinese). Kirstie, Scott & Mitch grew up together in Arlington, Texas, and began performing together as children in local youth musical theater. They ended up in high school together and performed in the choir. While there, they formed an a cappella group called The Trio which had several performance videos go viral on KZbin, most notably a cover of Lady Gaga′s "Telephone". The three of them are best friends and consider themselves to be almost siblings. Scott & Kirstie (who were a class year ahead of Mitch) both graduated high school in 2010 and went their separate ways to different colleges, Scott at USC and Kirstie at Oklahoma. While at USC, Scott joined a USC−based a cappella group called the SoCal VoCals, where he met alumnus Ben Bram, who was now an arranger and vocal coach for the NBC TV show The Sing Off, an a cappella competition show. Ben convinced Scott to get The Trio to audition for the show. The three reunited (Mitch had to skip high school graduation ceremonies to go) in Los Angeles for the audition. They found out that the rules had changed, so they needed at least five members to audition. Ben put them together with Avi (a native of Visalia, California), who he knew from Avi′s performing days at Mount San Antonio College in California. They found Kevin (from Kentucky) through one of his KZbin videos that had gone viral featuring him playing the cello and beatboxing at the same time, a talent that Kevin coined as "Cello−Boxing". Kevin arrived in Los Angeles literally the day before the audition! Scott came up with the name "Pentatonix" after the pentatonic scale. They performed a re−arrangement of "The Telephone" for the audition and passed, despite having been together as a five−piece group for less that 24 hours! Oh, yes, the name. Pentatonix is named for the pentatonic scale, which has five (penta) tones just as Pentatonix has five (Penta) singers. In other words, it's a fancier way of saying they're now "The Quintet." They won The Sing Off that season (all of the performances are available on KZbin), in which they received a substantial cash prize AND a record contract with Epic Records. They pooled their prize winnings together and all moved to Los Angeles, and all got apartments right next door to each other in the same building. But just a week later, Epic dropped them because the marketing people didn′t think an acappella group could sell records. Instead of giving up, they were determined and began recording their own songs on KZbin, hiring Ben Bram as their producer and arranger. These usually consisted of the five of them sitting on a couch and performing cover songs live. Several of the videos went viral, and Sony (the parent company of Epic) decided to give them another chance by placing them on one of their smaller labels, Madison Gate. They released two secular EPs and one Christmas EP on Madison Gate, all of which were strong sellers. But when their cover of a medley of songs by Daft Punk not only went super−viral, but also won them their first Grammy, they were promoted all the way up to RCA Records, Sony′s top label. They began writing and producing their own songs in addition to their covers, began putting out a Christmas album just about annually (which has become their best−selling genre), and have had multi−platinum album sales, sold−out world tours, and have won two additional Grammys. Avi began getting burned out with all of the touring and heavy recording schedule, was suffering from anxiety and personal problems, and learned that his mother had been diagnosed with cancer in 2017. He announced he was departing from the group and taking some time away from the music industry. Matt Sallee (from Baltimore) joined them in September 2017. He did only become official when they renewed their RCA contract in February 2018, but he recorded with them in September as a featured artist and went on their Christmas tour as a featured artist, as well. When he attended the audition for the group, he had already mastered the Bass part for most if not all their past catalogue. He was successful and has proved that he fits in well with the group. If you think there have been other changes to the line up - look again. This is the ONLY change. Kirstie and Mitch are like chameleons and change looks frequently. After a year away from music, Avi has now returned as a phenomenal solo artist in the Folk/Americana/Roots genre. Ben Bram has been in charge of their production, including arranging and directing from the beginning. He is often referred to as the sixth member. Scott and Kevin are major players in the arrangements, but every member contributes. good watch is "The Recording of Evergreen" where a camera was invited into the studio for the second week of recording/ Also, all members are songwriters for both Pentatonix and their own solo work. Ed Boyer who mixes everything of theirs (even the HWB Livestream) is the one who pulled Ben Bram into the sing off in the first place. The 3 Grammys they’ve won include…. (1)Daft Punk for Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella…… (2)Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies for Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella…. (3) Jolene w/Dolly Parton for Best Country Duo/Group Performance. They were nominated for a 4th Grammy for their album “Evergreen” for Best Traditional Vocal Album. They were also nominated for a 5th Grammy award for their album “Holidays Around The World” for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album. They have a star on the Hollywood walk of fame installed in February 2023. (THEY ARE THE ONLY ACAPELLA GROUP WITH A STAR!!!!) Kirstie became a new mum which caused a pause in touring after their Evergreen Christmas tour 2021. Mid March 2023 Kirstie has announced that she is engaged to Ben Hausdorff, their videographer. UPDATE…Kirsten and Ben got married 04/24/24. It is an often debated subject among the Pentaholics as to just how soon we introduce the "Beginners Guide" as we don't want to overdo the introduction. This is a compilation of snips of a whole load of songs which PTX have released. It highlights each member with some of their solos and then a brief history in video. It is quite long - 14+ minutes and is a little dated now (Feb 2020) but is a good watch kzbin.info/www/bejne/onXbepmtm6igh6c&pp=ygUdYmVnaW5uZXJzIGd1aWRlIHRvIHBlbnRhdG9uaXg%3D. Things you need to know because if you get these wrong “Pentaholics” will come after you with pitch forks and torches! Ha Ha Ha!! 1- There is NO Auto-Tune; what you hear is actually what they sing. They really are that good. One exception is the 90's Dance Medley where Cher used auto-tune as an effect - so they had to. 2- What produces everything that you hear in the video, you see in the official video. If there is an instrument used in the music, you see it on screen. In the 2022 Christmas album, there are some instruments not featured throughout the album. 3- They never release something on video they can’t reproduce with the exact same quality live on-stage.

I love that you brought up the 4-3 suspension. I love that progression too. I am a church organist who has also taken on directing the singers for the contemporary songs. One thing that drives me nuts with the contemporary songs is that the suspended chords often don't resolve. I have always loved the sound of that suspension, but it needs to resolve! And it's not just my preference. I learned about suspensions in 4-part chorale writing and the very function of a suspension is to resolve. This may sound like a complain, but it is all in good fun. But those are still my feelings. Love that chord and love this video!

I’ve been watching Pentatonix since the first night they appeared on the Sing Off. They’ve been my favorite group ever since. Hard to believe that anybody would take Kevin’s talent and contributions for granted. Especially if you ever watch a lot of the BTS videos or short films. He’s a major part of their sound as is Ben Bram. I just can’t pick a favorite member. Scott once said without all five of them, PTX doesn’t exist. That’s how I’ve looked at them ever since. Losing Avi was devastating but Matt is a hero in my eyes. It’s like he was prepping for his role long before anybody knew they would need him. I agree that comparing the different vocal groups is pointless. They all have a different focus and style. Let’s just enjoy all of them without needless competition for the “best” of a genre. What I look for in a group is variety of song selections, experiences and vocal arrangements. PTX gives me all of those elements. They do fabulous covers, original music, work with other artists, make movies, appear on TV, do their own solo work and work hard at providing their fans with a fun experience.

Good reaction and analysis. Pentatonix are great vocalists and are my favourite acapella group, although Voiceplay and Maytree can be stunning in totally different ways. My favourite vocal group though is Forestella, a South Korean crossover male quartet who can sing brilliantly, basically anything. They are known as The Kings Of Harmony and many reactors refer to them as an acapella group. But there is no beatboxer (only 4 members) and their arrangements are brilliant not least their excellent use of the interaction between instrumentals and vocals. Also, Forestella tends to make better use of their great bass, Ko Woo Rim, than Pentatonix does with Avi in the past and Matt now. Voiceplay makes good use of Geoff though, which is one of their major strengths.

I am just a bit sad that Pentatonix is so pop and heavily produced. I really like the old authentic covers, where you can still hear their "real"voices. But over the last years, they have published nothing that me excites

So you like, “Grandma got run over by a reindeer,” more than “I saw mommy kissing Santa Claus?”

For straightforward classical singers, Voces 8 - who also like Pentatonix :)

Not to burst anyone's bubble that these gifts were meant to be pets, but: The reason why someone would want that many birds is to *eat* them -- Geese (and goose eggs), swans, blackbirds, hens, were all typically roasted for feasts. And with that many milkmaids, dancing ladies, pipers, and lords to feed (for twelve days), you'd need a long grocery list. [Note: this reply was written 30% tongue-in-cheek]

Hmmm 🤔 so, for me, I have two on relatively equal footing, those being Pentatonix and Voiceplay.

I’m an acapella singer and I think it’s important to acknowledge they are human and are not perfect singers live. Yes, they are great but I was at their concert a couple of weeks ago and there were times someone was off. One song in particular was a total mess for me. But I still really enjoyed it overall!

Sorry, it's good, but pales against 'Christmas Truce' by Sabaton. The emotional impact is immense, especially with the video - the production is awesome and someone you might recognise sings over the end credits, (hint: operatic soprano:)

My favourite group is Voiceplay, it used to be PTX - but I find them rather too polished and predictable, whereas Voiceplay have the variety and excitement of early PTX

I’m with you. 12 days of Christmas is my least favorite carol. Unfortunately Pentatonix is also my least favorite as well. Too commercial for my taste.

I love them, but have issues with them sounding overly pitch corrected in these videos. That just icks my ears.

Do you know what that song is about? It's not about birds. It's a hymn, about the most religious Christmas song you could find. The "partridge in a pear tree" was Jesus Christ who died on a tree as a gift from God. The "two turtle doves" were the Old and New Testaments - another gift from God. The "three French hens" were faith, hope and love - the three gifts of the Spirit that abide (I Corinthians 13). The "four calling birds" were the four Gospels which sing the song of salvation through Jesus Christ. The "five golden rings" were the first five books of the Bible also called the "Books of Moses". The "six geese a-laying" were the six days of creation. The "seven swans a swimming" were the "seven gifts of the Holy Spirit". (I Corinthians 12:8-11; Romans 12, Ephesians 4; I Peter 4:10-11). The "eight maids a milking" were the eight beatitudes. The "nine ladies dancing" were nine fruits of the Holy Spirit. (Galatians 5:22 & 23) The "ten lords a-leaping" were the Ten Commandments. The "eleven pipers piping" were the eleven faithful disciples. The "twelve drummers drumming" were the twelve points of the Apostles' Creed.

Just a reminder, "Wonderful Christmas Time" by Paul McCartney may be a candidate for worst Christmas song ever.

Wait--so you used to like "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" BETTER than "12 Days of Christmas"? My friend! Seriously? At its worst, "12 Days" is repetitive and silly. It's also a fun song to sing on the bus when your choir is on Christmas tour. But "I Saw Mommy"? I'm not thanking you for putting that worm into my brain!
