Scott's range has grown so much the last few years... In this song it just shines! Starts solo in rich baritone, then does 3-part harmonies, then fills in for the bass as Matt sings lead, then harmonizes with Mitch as a tenor when Kirstie sings lead, and finally he effortlessly bounces around to whatever is required of him until song's end...

Gotta give these guy's extra credit just for assembling five (6, I still count Avi) such individually talented musicians to work together so well for so long. A superb example of music above egos.

Okay I will say this under EVER reaction to PTX doing the sound of silence....but I NEED Matt to get his just dues for that octave drop. It was FLAWLESSLY executed and more people need to talk about that especially since he's the newest member of the group and replaced Avi who has so beloved and such a talented bass. Matt is growing and learning with the group and gaining confidence. He deserves a massive shout out for his natural ability and talent tho

I am also a fan of the three renditions of _Sound of Silence_ you mentioned. To me, Disturbed gave the song a demanding intensity, while Pentatonix kept some of that intensity and restored the harmonies which Simon and Garfunkel's original embodied.

I was a kid when S&G released their original version, and I loved the harmonic simplicity it had that has endured these 50 years on. When I heard the Disturbed version I was amazed at the POWER and Grittiness that his version displayed. Now comes the Pentatonix version that is different from either of the others. It has a power and foreboding tone all its own and a vocal complexity that sets it apart from either of its predecessors. It is not better than the others, but it is different and I would love to see an interview with P5 to hear how they arrived at this version musically and how its message came across to them! All 3 are stunning works in their own right, and are testaments to how musical interpretation by performers can change the mood of a song so completely!

I have come to think of all 3 versions as equally moving. The Simon & Garfunkel version made you really listen, & you could feel/hear the melancholic almost haunting words. The Disturbed version echoes such. But pulls you in, almost out of the rage building in it. A plead almost. Then PTX took it, kept the nostalgic & impactful resonance of the lyrics, added their talents that neither of the previous could do, BUT, managed to add HOPE. I love it!

I liked the Disturbed version the first time I heard it because it was so different but on the second and third listening I really was over it. It isn't very interesting arrangement wise. I prefer both this and the Simon and Garfunkel original to it.

There are actually TWO Simon & Garfunkel versions. The first was an acoustic version that appeared on their first album in 1964, and that is my favorite version. The "electric" version was a single released in 1965 that later appeared on the Sounds Of Silence album. I'm not really a fan of that one, even though it was the hit. There has been a saying going around on the internet concerning this song that I agree with: The S&G original was a gentle warning of things to come, the Disturbed cover is an angry response that the warning was ignored, and the Pentatonix cover is hopeful optimism that the warning will still be heard. I'm a MUCH bigger fan of the Pentatonix version than the Disturbed version, because I believe its pure anger goes against Paul Simon's original intention for the song, while Pentatonix's version is much closer to what S&G were trying to convey.

The Simon and Garfunkel version hit the charts when I was a freshman in high school and, for me, simply can't be surpassed. But the Pentatonix version is right up there. I just can't get into the Disturbed rendition. I've tried, and will continue to listen to it, but it just doesn't do it for me. Perhaps it's because being old enough to remember the release of the original, and having listened to it for decades, the anger in the Disturbed version seems too harsh and jarring compared to the melancholy of the original. (I'm not hating, just trying to look within to determine why I don't like it when so many love it). But I find the Pentatonix version majestic, moving, and inspiring. Thanks for the great review!

@@dannytheswedishmusixian1513 Haha, good question! I find Disturbed version "disturbing" - pun intended. I don't like it, but I'm fascinated by it. That dichotomy itself is intriguing, creating more interest and periodically drawing me in for another listen. I give them credit, that's a pretty amazing thing to pull off with a song.

If you're going to boast about being right, you might want to get the name of the band correct. It's not Pena-tonix, it's Penta-tonix. You are correct that this is an awesome version of one of my favorite songs by Simon & Garfunkel though.
