The signal to noise ratio of this camera is incredible!

Highly enjoyable and informative video, Albert. You remain one of the veteran Pentaxians and photojournalists I hold in the highest esteem, sir. Get the story out!

Thanks so much! These days I work quite a bit with video and mainly use a Sony NXCAM (dedicated video camera from broadcast division). I've tried DSLR and mirrorless for video a few years ago, including from Sony and Canon, but have never been impressed with the quality compared to a dedicated professional video camera no matter the brand. The current batch of high-end DSLR and mirrorless cameras are fantastic at video from what I see, but I'm not prepared to invest in a new system. Anyway, I really love the look (rendering, colors, feel) of Pentax glass. I was starting to look into DSLR and mirrorless as video options again recently and was given a chance to try the KP just before it hit the market. Yes, there are more advanced options out there (with price to match), but none of them allow me to use my glass without compromise. To say that I was impressed with the video quality of the KP would be an understatement, so I added it to my kit. I plan to use the KP for my video work, which includes broadcast television news. I really mean it when I say this is by far the best Pentax for video so far and well worth the purchase. And on a maybe silly note... I think it is one good-looking camera.

KZbin's recompression isn't doing us any favours,... Any chance of some samples uploaded to Dropbox? And any with the Muted picture profile, instead of the stock Natural ?

I plan to try some other modes and see what I can get out of the camera, but for now this is what I have. I don't use Dropbox or really have something with the bandwidth to share the file to more than a few people, but if you want to host it, I'm more than happy to give you the full version of what I uploaded here. PM me if interested.

File sizes? I'll clear some space :) I was looking for someone local to me in Melbourne, Australia, to see if they'd let me try hook up my Atomos Shogun to a KP, but so far, no takers. If I can find and test, I'd be buying a KP - that low-light capability, recorded to ProRes files, would show just how much potential is there to be unlocked, iff we could get Ricoh-Pentax to listen to what us video-shooters have been asking for, for years.

I'm really glad I saw this video. I'm sorry for this long comment, but your two KP videos are shaping up to be Exhibit A & B in my camera buying decision... So, thank you. And, if you've got a few minutes (I've already deleted over half of what I wrote... :) ) I'm brand new to cameras, and I need a DSLR that will shoot really good video - Naturally, I'm greedy, and want beautiful still photography as well, but if I had to choose a single most important area to shine in for this first camera, it would have to be video. When someone first pointed me at the KP, I was almost literally dizzied by all the wonderful still photography options, and it was just about love at first sight, but I was good and started doing my research. Because of my requirements and the search strings they made logical, your video was the first one I saw, and it was wonderful to see, but you can't stick with just one source, so I kept looking. As I watched and read other reviews, the common ground seemed to be like "Great photos, but nobody would ever shoot video with this, right? Ha ha, of course not." and that was a very bad blow - I've never even held one, and I already love this camera, but bad video? It's a deal breaker! But, I keep coming back to your video, and it restores my resolve, to a degree. You say they've made a "giant leap" in terms of improvements, and you also say this camera produces some of the best video quality you've seen (from a camera of this level/price, I assume?), and the footage that rolls during that part of the video is the part I always focus on - to me, it says "Yes, you can use this for small student and KZbin and indie film projects, and it won't be video quality that makes you look amateur" ;)) I also see on another of your videos you had a pre-production model of the KP for test shooting, which seems to imply a good probability of either a connection to the company, noteworthy expertise making you a valuable evaluator for them, though, of course, it could be anything. :) So, if you have the time and inclination to reply, I have a question. This video - even at higher ISO settings (though I don't fully understand ISO yet) looks really good to me. Other reviewers say Pentax video quality isn't great - is that probably because this model is so much better than previous ones, or are there other cameras under $1000 US that are just so much better that even video this good is lackluster to a more trained eye? Is it more difficult to get this quality? I mean, you mentioned default settings, so, even though I'm willing to - and expecting to - learn difficult skills to shoot the best video, if these are default settings it doesn't look like a have a whole lot to be worried about... Right? If you were a brand new college-level skills person, buying your first DSLR for your first film school photography class, and you wanted to have the best video quality you could afford, but still have good still quality, and have a camera you could "grow in to" (I keep hearing that advice, and it sounds logical) would this be on our short list? Or at the top of it even?

Hi, no worries about the long comment. It's my pleasure to reply. Quite honestly, as much as I love PENTAX cameras and think the KP is fantastic and has great video, I would recommend you look at one of the mirrorless options since video seems to be your main goal. There is no single camera that I would be willing to call ideal for both video and stills. Some are better suited than others as a total system, some offer outstanding video and great stills while others offer outstanding stills and great video. Truth is any camera you buy these days offer great stills, but video... well... current DSLR options still lag behind mirrorless solutions. If I were a new college student buying my first camera for film school, I would honestly look at either a Panasonic or Sony mirrorless camera as both brands have models that offer fantastic results at a modest cost. They also allow you to easily use countless vintage lenses, which are often found at a very low cost, thus allowing you to build out a nice system within your budget which you can upgrade or change as your skills grow. That being said, if stills are are a top priority and you can live with the limits of a DSLR compared to a mirrorless for video, the KP is a fantastic purchase that is hard to beat.

@@AlbertSiegel Turns out mirrorless is ok for the class, so that's good. If you have time, could you point me at a resource to learn which vintage lenses would go with - say - a Panasonic G85, if that's a good choice? Either way, thank you again. :)

This might be way to late but If I’d buy a camera in the next few years it would be a sony A7, and thats what I can recommend to you! I love pentax for photos, but they’re actually bad for video. A sony A7 ii costs about 600€ used... for comparison, my K-3 ii cost me about 900€ new a year ago. I don’t regret buying it though, since it saved me money because I had already a few Pentax lenses. I ended up buying a used Sony RX 100, i guess a mark 4 or 5, with that I’m actually really happy! (something around 300 or 400€) Again it depends on what you want to shoot, for vloging or close shots the RX is perfect but if you want that versatility just go for any A7. I’d avoid Canon because they just lack quality, except on their pro cameras. Some are ok with them though. Idk about nikon, there’re just straight up weird haha... but they seem to do a great job and I’d prefer them over canon. I never tested a Panasonic or something like that, but according to what people say about the GH5 is quite good for video, but I don’t even want to touch one because these little brands might not keep up with sony. All just my opinions and experiences.
