Pentax KP vs SONY A6100 - THE BEST APSC EVER?

Pentax is a gem. Features, quality, price, there is no other brand better than Pentax. Using Pentax for 20 years, still use my manual lenses on modern Pentax bodies.

The KP takes a battery grip too, which I find handy for battery life as well as a nice grip.

Yes it does! 100% correct. I just refused to buy one for the Sony to compare lol. Maybe for the A6600 but now I think there is no point for the A6600 lol. RIP sony.

Face detect in live view is defacto eye focus for the KP... Works good too

Just had my KP for a few months - y ou've confirmed what I've believed for a while about KP and K1 - amazing ISO performance, low light shooting, colour science, and overal sharpness. Blows most other competitors out of the water, £ for £ (or $ for $ if you prefer!) Plus IBS and all those legacy lenses! If only Pentax weren't so good as underselling their cameras!

That is very true! I can say with even more confidence, if you want an all around camera for pure photography, Pentax KP and K1 are amazing for what you get. I also have plenty of fun using the manual lenses on the K1. Its a different experience than my Nikon.

Interesting that you say that. When I bought my first DSLR I had done a lot of researching to decide what brand to go with and it was the excellent ISO/noise performance of the K-r that brought me to Pentax which was at the time matched only by cameras way beyond my budget, costing four to five times as much. A funny coincidence which I somehow realized just now is that my first film SLR 35 years ago was a Ricoh KR-10. Funny coincidence the same (almost) KR name and that now Pentax is also Ricoh.

@@listerdave1240 haha. yep. 9 months later and I'm still loving my KP. I actually got a K3 as a spare body cheap as well - that's pretty amazing too. Prefer the layout of the K3, but the kp is a slightly better IQ performer.

Great review. I hope Pentax survives for years to come. In case they don't, I think I'd like to see reviews on what you think would be the best cameras and adapter systems to make use of K mount and M42 screw mount lenses. I don't plan on getting rid of my equipment though I realize digital camera bodies eventually become obsolete.

That will be a future video actually but we will see what is up ahead in 2020. Majority of the people can now use these glass on any mirrorless with an adapter. Im waiting on a company to do a full flesh K mount AF adapter, that will change the scope of everything.

Hahaha! nice. I think I will run a Nikon vs Pentax K1. I am looking into canon but we will see on that. I will finish off this sony series and then regroup and go back to the K1. ( 2019 on this channel has been too much KP lol, need the K1 back! )

9:02 to me it just looks like Sony has a higher exposure (about 1/3 to 2/3 of a stop) despite being at the same ISO 100. This is given away by the fact that the highlights are more blown out and the shadows are more exposed on the Sony given the two images. Which leads me to believe that ISO 200 on Pentax is equivalent to ISO 100 on Sony. Sony is ISO cheating here like Fujifilm to give the illusion of better ISO performance, but the give away is the higher noise and the exposure differences between the cameras. Pentax is the winner In my opinion, but I could be biased here as I own a KP and a very happy owner. Thanks for another great video, Li!

Oh yea! I will say there is some funky stuff going on in the Sony file. I was kind of thrown off at the start and thought I had my settings wrong but nope. It was all correct and I feel Sony is using old tech and re purposing it as new? Im selling this unit asap when I finish my reviews that is for sure.

Yuip, they are a brand that is one and done. They make one good camera that holds up for 3-4 years, while other companies are resale the same camera over and over with minor small features. I I also owned the A6000 and A6300.

Yup exactly. Pentax can just insert a 4K recording and eye tracking and then its even with the features.

Your X-T30 vs KP video made my decision to get the KP easier. This video made me feel even better about my decision. However, I did end up getting an X-T30 brand new with zero shots on Offer Up for $480! With the 27mm 2.8, it's pocketable (depending on the pocket) and is fun to use but I still prefer my KP for portraits.

Yup. I was a bit shock to see this myself. Recycle their sensor and maybe adjust some hair improvements. I was expecting a bit more from the Sony since this sensor carries over their A6600.

I used to shoot Pentax but their autofocus is so bad, the keepers rate was so low that I was missing a lot of shots. It all comes down on what you shoot. For landscapes were AF is not crucial get the Pentax. For shooting moving kids, portrait, fast action, wildlife, videos, travel, street... get the Sony.

I think its because I started with the K1 and the Kp. Anything before that I was over at Nikon. From my experience, my Nikon was serviced and it was serviced for AF issues as well. I havent experience any AF issue just yet on the Pentax but time will tell when I encounter this and will make a rant video lol..

Great review Li! What you think about Pentax APSC Mirrorless K01? I'm going to buy a pre-owned K01 with great condition for lovely price. I think its design is awesome and out of the box, and expect it has solid performance too although released more than 5 years ago. I'm currently Fuji & Canon user and wanna try Pentax after watching your channel. 🙂

I have 2 k01'. One is modified for so-called full spectrum (near UV within the limits of the lens to IR at least to 940nm with filters.) I have used the unmodified camera mostly for taking pictures with my microscope. I use the UV-Vis-IR with filters to mainly play around with. I like the k01'. It is a different experience than my k20. I did pick up a Zacuto adapter system so I can view the live view screen of the K01 like using a DSLR and I do like it. Note that the Zacuto gadget is pricy. There are cheaper screen eyepiece viewers but I wanted something that was high quality. It's ashamed Pentax doesn't produce it any more. If Pentax was open to user input, I'd give them a list of things I'd like to see in a modern mirrorless system.

Adi Prasetya k-01 has great image quality and excellent controls. A great buy and underrated by many commentators and influencers. It is small enough and solidly built. I really rate it.

In addition to a K-1, I have a K-01 that I take instead when traveling very light. Paired with the small DA Limited lenses its a great, relatively compact, combination. I also find the IQ of the K-01 surprisingly good (especially given how old it is now) and exposure is usually spot on. On the negative side the lack of viewfinder is a bit of a pain in bright sunlight - I have got used to shielding the LCD with my hand. Also the AF is a bit on the slow side (fine for what I shoot) but is reliable and accurate. I like it.

With the image quality test, did you mention the lens used on the Pentax (maybe I missed it?)? I can only think of this as a reason for why somehow you've got some thumbs down :( Great video!

August Boehm Apologies. I used the 14 mm on both camera system . I had an adapter from K to E mount. I think the thumbs down might be from Sony user lol. I also do have a few Pentax follks who dont like the channel :( .

Yup, that is the plan. You know my movements too well lol. I can say yes it does 11 fps and the IQ isnt as great so we will see with some GM glass vs Pentax. Going to be interesting !

hello from sweden. wonder why Pentax is not noticed in media type photo magazines as well as advertising on the internet and youtube etc. It's mostly Canon, Nikon, Olympus. etc. i think it was pentax that helped olympus to start with cameras. if I'm not mistaken, they had the same k-mount on the optics. but may be wrong there. or is it that pentax does not want to get too big.

I think this could be a smart move on Pentax part because Nikon has been losing millions this year and when I stepped into a book store, they are #1 in terms of marketing in all the camera advertisement. Even though Nikon / Canon might have the biggest present in ads, they arent doing so hot in terms of making a profit this year. Sony does their strategy on their own turf, social influencers. While Pentax, they are low key company and their target audience are probably those who are well verse in all camera brands. Why dont they spent money on marketing? Perhaps the climate now is to maintain instead of pushing because after reviewing Fuji and Sony against the Pentax, notable thing was Pentax is still capable but lack 4k and eye tracking feature. That is really it, where as Fuji and Sony rebrand their old cameras with 1 or 2 new feature every year.

This will be answer in my next video. I think it depends on what you are shooting. There were some concerns I am having about the sony but if you have it for family photos and just taking pics of a baby running, you should be fine. Anything too complicated or advance, might be a gamble.. I need to show some demonstrations soon.!

@@sdhute No, using an OMD EM1 MK2, though the Z50 looks OK, except single card slot and would need the adapter to get a decent lens selection.. not interested in Fuji, no ergonomics. weather sealing and compactness are priorities as do a lot of walking in the hills.

How do you develop the pixelshift file?

When you shoot pixel shift, it develops into 1 single file in the camera. I know sony a7riii and up , you need to gather all 4 or 6 files and have sony program develop the pixel shift file in to 1 file. I usually use light room to adjust my files.

I hear many negative feedback about Fuji XH1 color science especially for video recording. It should be upgraded next year with XT-3 sensor and processor. Panasonic G9 has solid performance. And with latest firmware update, G9 can shoot 4K 30fps/25fps 4:2:2 10 bit internally like GH5 does. But Panasonic cameras has slow AF due to its CDAF technology compared to other brands with solid AF performance like Canon or Sony.

@@jakubstrumillo I'm Fuji XT30 user and Canon 5D Mk II user too. XH1 negative feedback isnt color science in term of pic profile (Canon) or film simulation (Fuji). Its more about the picture quality itself. You can watch some review on XH1 video quality for more clear insight. I was used to get XH1 but after knowing its cons, I decide to wait its second generation (XH2) next year 🙂
