Too bad all forms of media today are absolutely swamped with games, shows, music and movies that are shallow, busy, loud, shocking, etc. I feel like most kids would find it “boring” because they are nearly incapable of paying attention, taking time, or really thinking about things. Consider the popularly of TikTok. Super short mindless copy and paste bullshit

I'm probably your typical Call of Duty, Tony Hawk Pro Skater, and Forza type of gamer that doesn't have much time each gaming session to dig deep into a gaming story. BUT I'm between jobs right now and feeling incredibly burnt out on the CoD Warzone craze. So I have large chunks of time to play through games! I laughed at the description of this game viewing it through Xbox Game Pass so I gave it a shot. It's SO addicting. I can't believe I'm this invested in a text based game! I hate reading in general but this is actually fun. This could be a gateway type of thing for me to enjoy reading for the first time. Who knows. I love this game and am moving super slow but it feels fine doing so and the world of Pentiment isn't lacking in character and setting development. 10/10 fantastic game! I would have definitely been the type of gamer that this would not appeal to at first glance. But here I am... Nerdin out.

I started this game yesterday and have barely been able to put it down. Finished the first playthrough in 13 hours. I read pretty fast. It's a good game. Many people are probably going to be put off by all the unfamiliar names and references. I encourage them to tough it out and find the human story behind it. Pentiment is a portrait of a community enduring hardship and strife in the midst of tumultuous historical change. The people endure oppression, bad harvests, and callous lords but still find time to fall in love, have families, gossip and feast. I found myself captivated by them and their stories.

Pentiment is an amazing game, at first I was a little frustrated and thinking perhaps it was not for me. But at the end, I finished it with 24h and 40 minutes gameplay, so yeah, I put a LOT of time and really enjoyed it! When the game ended I literally had tears in my eyes, because of the amazing experience I just had and how I would miss it! Its a niche game, but not as much as people think. As you have said, there are many reasons to love Pentiment. Perhaps gamers need to have a more open mind.. we are living in a age where developers take the "low risk" path, game development is hard, so many games are suffering from a creativity bankruptcy. Games like Pentiment and Vampire Survivors are not your "standard" game, but that doesnt mean they are niche, just different, and being different in a creativity bankruptcy industry can be a good thing!

As someone who loves history, point n clicks/narrative adventures, and morally ambiguous storytelling, I ADORE this game. I’ve also had my eyes on it since the announcement. These are the type of games that give me faith in the industry. I’ve played very few games that so deeply immerse you into history and remind you that there’s no one correct perspective on history and how it’s a living breathing narrative. Im so glad you enjoyed it and took time out to gush about it even if it’s a “low engagement” topic. Your love for video games and what they offer as a medium is so infectious. I’ll also be checking out Scorn thanks to your video on it! Cheers

What I really like about this game is how your background isn't a 'win button' in dialogues. Like in other RPG's if you picked Intelligence you'd automatically get a leg up in convos, but here the choices with a 'profiency' icon next to them often aren't the best choices. For instance I picked theology as my study background and the convo options this unlocks are mostly lame platitudes that I rarely picked. I also picked 'bookworm' as background and picking that often made you seem out of touch as well, like caring more about books in the library than people. Mind you there are still times when I picked the option with the icon, but it's always worth it to read every option.

This is one of the best aspects of this game. So you read a ton of books and studied this and that? And you (player) think this would somehow make you look good in the eyes of a poor peasant who never left their village and has been starving for year because of dire circumstances? Of course not! Every character sees you through their eyes (and your actual actions). Different backgrounds can give you leverage but only with the characters that might care about that specific background. More games should be like this.

This is my all-time favorite game, bar-none! The game-play is excellent, the art is GORGEOUS, and the murder mystery story-line keeps you guessing and searching for answers. I love how this game departs from the typical "been-there-done-that" style of most medieval games out there (e.g. endless battles or magic/dark fantasy), and creates something entirely new, authentic, and beautiful. I'm also a massive fan of Medieval art, illuminated manuscripts, and mysteries, so this game ticks every box. I've already played this game 3 times through, and I'm planning on going back into the beautiful world of Pentiment to play it again soon.😆 I only wish Obsidian would make more games like this.

This game is amazing. And graceful at that. It doesn’t hold you by the hand. It painfully teaches you that just because you have the skill to say something, you don’t have to do it. The highlight is how the story individually develops for you. It is like rediscovering you own humanity. Andreas is cryptic at times about his status until you let it happen. And it feels like you are in his soul, struggling yourself to admit your flaws. Which are his. It mimics life in so many facets. Like how it works with fonts to telegraph Someone speaking from simple or educated descent. Or even a confession scene that drags on for a while - just for me to realize that this is like the real thing. It decelerates our modern game antics in a very human way.

I was very surprised by the depth and nuance of the story. I actually was born and raised in Bavaria not far from the area where Tassing is supposed to be located. I also have a background of medieval studies (music and literature) so this game really blew me away. The game felt very true to the history and area. It reminded me of many experiences and conversations I had (in the also very rural and catholic village I grew up in). Of course we're not living in the middle ages anymore but the themes definitely struck a chord. I'm very happy that this game was made with so much love and research. And while it does go into fantasy elements (Witcher author after all), it did a great job at describing the middle ages in Europe, this game covers the time period around 100 years later so should be an interesting history lesson to see what factions/religions/cultures are still dominant. Have this downloaded already and looking forward to jumping into it.

The felt so slow and dull at first, I pushed myself to keep playing. I’m so glad that I did. I got so lost in the world and was intrigued by how nuanced all the different perspectives the npcs had. I had a blast playing this game. What a gem.

Really glad I clicked this video. I'm a huge fan of what Obsidian has been doing with the old-school approach to RPGs, but I don't necessarily have the time to invest into a Pillars of Eternity. Thanks Jake, for putting this on my radar.

I'm here because Phil Spencer port Pentiment to PlayStation and Nintendo. I'm sold because of the book story like murder mystery thing. Ordering the physical on Nintendo from Limited Run.

This game was one of the best surprises I've had in 30 years of gaming. Had low expectations at first, but omg did it deliver. I hate reading, I'm more audiobook, loved this game, didn't feel like you're reading a book. The story is so good you just get hooked. Every aspect of the game is spot on. The only option I'd like is to be able to turn on/off the pen 🖋️ sounds.

This game intrigued me since the announcement. I've lived Obsidian for years so I figured I'd give it a go. I love many aspects of games so I always see how they are on their own merits. I really like this game and love the passion put into this very unique project. I wanna keep seeing cool smaller scale games like this from Xbox.

This game isnt for me but i am still going to give it a shot, i have a lot of time on my hands right now with one of my main hobbies dying down for the winter, so why not go outside my comfort zone and support a passion project from a studio i like. Im down its at least worth a download on gamepass.

As soon as I saw this announced, I started screaming. I am literally the audience they made it for (Medievalist/Romanist/re-enactor who reads latin, middle french, a bit of Italian and a bit of German) It is superb in every possible way. The marginalia you see when you zoom out are just amazing. I am so grateful this game was made. I never thought I'd see something like this.

I'm usually not a text heavy game kinda guy, I'm a big fan of experiences like Journey or Gris that are basically just lightly interactive experiences. But god my interest has continued to rise every time I heard about this game. And then seeing it get insanely good reviews and recommends from folks like Jake is telling me that I need to carve out some time to play this.

I've drifted away from games in the last few months, but this one had me enthralled from start to finish and kind of reignited my desire to play games. I also want to learn more about the Holy Roman Empire and the Reformation. Reminded me of how I felt after playing Gabriel Knight 2 as a kid - I wanted to learn all about Richard Wagner and King Ludwig II.

From your description, it sounds like a more story, less management version of Yes, Your Grace which makes me interested to try this! And when it comes to history being shown and talked of in games, that was one of my favorite things about the older Assassin's Creed games when you would go by something important and it would tell you things about it :) I've always been more of a visual learner since I was a kid, so I love this kind of thing!
