I didn’t click thinking I’d find a chartreuse ink to try, but that’s how this hobby tends to go. Full of surprises.

Some browns I like that you haven't mentioned: J. Herbin Lie de Thé (a lighter brown with tons of shading), J. Herbin Café des Îles (a medium, warm brown), and Sailor Shikiori Rikyu-cha, which I find fascinating because it looks extremely different depending on the paper and amount of ink - it goes from an olive green to a definite brown. It also has a beautiful red sheen when applied thickly. The chromatography shows a lot of blue. (Speaking of chromatography, Pilot Iroshizuku Tsukushi also has a very interesting one, with a lot of pink and purple.)

To me the Robert Oster khakhi looks green, pure and simple. I don't really see any brown there.

It's olive green to my eyes. Not even marginally brown.

Check out Taccia Tsuchi (Golden Wheat). It's a lovely brown.

Brown is best color for fountain pens. Covers all nib/feed sins. Prevents hard starts. I use Thornton which is extremely popular and rightly so. It cleans nibs too by filling and emptying converter in ink several times and soaking nib for another 30 seconds.

Great video! I missed out on getting Iroshizuku Tsukushi before it was discontinued. My two favorite browns are Colorverse Coffee Break and Herbin Terre de Feu. Brown inks have grown on me in the last couple of years.

i like the browns, too. Have samples of Namiki Iroshizuku Yama-guri; Van Dieman's Tasmania Series Oak Wood; Kyo-no-iro Gion's Cobblestones; Platinum Classic Sepia Black; Private Reserve Ebony Brown; Diamine Ochre; Jacques Herbin Caroube de Chypre; and Noodler's Chekhov. Thanks for this video.

The more I get ink addicted, I’ve noticed my favorites tend towards high shading first, followed by sheen, then shimmer. The latter two can get over the top, not so for shading which can’t be too much…for me, anyway.

I am the same, more shading inks I gravitate towards the most.

nice one dave. love your videos especially the ink comparison ones. not a big fan of the pens you tend to gravitate towards though...however, like you, i love big pens.

It is unfortunate that the Iroshizuku inks have such a light sheen. It shows only on Tomoe River paper. Since Tomoe River have stopped making the 58 gsm paper, it is very difficult to get TR notebooks. Other papers don't show the sheen. I have been using the Diamine Inkvent Blue Edition Nutcracker. It has a slight sheen, and it shows on even Rhodia. Perhaps you can give it a try later Dave. Number 3, maybe?? Thank you for the Ink comparison.

Tsukushi is gone, and Waterman also axed its brown. Strange coincidence. I grabbed Waterman brown last year. Won't work in Pilot Metropolitan, flows nicely in Waterman Expert.

I seem to recall that brown pens sold quite well but maybe brown inks don't sell as well?

Love the KWZ brown. If you had a standard brown, what color would you mix in to warm it up? What ratio?

I haven't tried mixing brown before but I think you'd want it more yellow or warmer tones like an orange but not sure if that might then turn into another colour altogether. I think you'd have to start off with more of a yellow/warm tone colour then add a little brown at a time to it to get the desired result.
