Here in the US we have GPS to tell us when the rear of our trains have cleared a speed restriction or crossing. Before GPS we had footage counters on board. Push a button and it starts counting up, then just reset when your length has cleared.
@rafchris2 жыл бұрын
In the UK some trains have distance travelled calculators based on taco i.e. an axle counter. But thats mostly freight locos. Passenger trains vary from 2 cars to 10 for the majority and in real life speed boards are placed in such a way that you wouldnt be breaking the speed limit even if you accelerated as quickly as possible after passing them i.e. overlap between when a speed limit increases and when your told you about it. Either way based on the speed before the speed limit you can work out how many seconds to wait before accelerating if needed. 60mph is just under 25 metres per second. Most carriages are between 20 and 25 meters so at 60mph leave 1 second per carriage, 30 leave 2 seconds per carriage etc etc.

The only small thing that bugs me with a lot of British route scenarios is the wait time at small stations ,in real life 1 or 2 passengers get on and the wait time would be about 10 seconds , doors close and off you go again ,on TSW it's about 30 /40 seconds and if your on tight schedule in the game it adds up
@rafchris2 жыл бұрын
In real life you have a timetable. You can wait minutes if you arrive early or timing is built in or leave asap if your running late.... either way most stops are timed for about a minute so 10 seconds would be unrealistic

As someone who works right next to the station in redruth, and lives in Truro, the level of detail is insane in this. The level crossings are in the right places, the buildings localised to the stations are spot on...its fantastic. To answer a couple of questions you raised in the video, the 40 limit coming into Redruth is because you're going over a bridge immediately before stopping on the platform, and the branch line coming out of Truro goes down to Falmouth

About the "knowing when the end of the train passes the speed limit", there are a few possibilities: Some trains have built in functions where you program in the length of your train and while driving you hit a switch in the cabin and the system will calculate from the current speed and the length of the train when the end of the train passes the point where you activated the system. On most tracks there are distance markers of some kind that can be used to estimate the distance traveled, these can be numbered signs that indicate to the driver where on the route they are or for example on electrified routes the distance between catenary poles is relatively standardized, so the train driver can count the poles to estimate the distance, give it a pole or two of leeway and you know when the back of the train passes the speed limit.
@nobadicher52682 жыл бұрын
In real life you re not gonna lose points if you re going 5 km/h above speed limit. :)
@nobadicher52682 жыл бұрын
And in passenger trains i don t think it s that hard to estimate the length of the train. I m curious about the US trains, when there s 80 cars, that would be awesome to know how they know.

Markers indicating (1st Moto coach clear, that means 25% in case of Mumbai local, successive boards till 4th Motor coach cleared). 2. The train guard is station on the trailing end of EMU. I find that to keep most of the schedules you have to run the train within 1-2 MPH of the speed limit. If the limit is 70 then you need to be running 68-69 or 70 to get around any issues you may run into. Red lights, etc.... You seemed to run 10-20 mph under the limit at the beginning....Also, if you are running at the speed limit as you just see the station you can brake easily to stop in plenty of time... When I ride transit trains in USA (real life) they tend to fly into stations and slow very quickly to stop.

I'm also wondering how you know when the rear of the train passes a point. I know that in some of them you can insert the length and push a button. Then it will notify you when you passed that length. I guess most just use their experience and estimate it based on length, speed and time. In reality it won't be that critical if you start accelerating a bit too early. Or you wait a little longer to be safe.
