So tickled you name your plants too! But as I have gotten older and pretty ill, they are mostly all named “Bob” now. : )

Great job you two. Very informative. We just need to know where you get those wonderful garden boots.

Excellent video! Thank you. I have been propagating my 35 year old lillies with fantastic success. Started with 12 of my grandfathers and now after 7 years I'm close to 150! This is my first year splitting my favorite peony. Its about 5 years old and blooms are huge pink and beautiful. I had one massive root system with approximately 40 to 50 healthy eyes , my question is can I do anything with the thicker roots that broke off? Brown bag them over the winter or plant them ? I know they won't be flowers anytime soon but will they grow into mature plants eventually? Thanks for the video , it was very helpful today! 👍👍

You can plant the stray & broken root pieces of lactiflora peonies & they will often develop crown cells/eyes & become a new peony plant. These are called adventitious roots. Look it up for more info. This takes a few years as the roots develop in the first season after planting, & the foliage shows itself in the second year. So it's a slow process, but well worth the effort!

This is the best video I have seen on how to divide peonies. I have 50 year old peonies in heavy clay and would almost need a back hoe to dig any of them.

This is very interesting. I love to plant peonies. But i don't know if it can survive and stand the hot weather in Philippines

I think it’s not necessary to remove soooo much soil From the roots!
@Debbie-ni8bc3 күн бұрын
It does seem that if not as much soil was removed, there would be less chance of air pockets in and around the roots when replanting.

After you dig and divide, how long before before you have to replant. I plan on sharing some of the new crowns and it may be several days before they get planted again.

The stem of my itoh peony ( Yellow Crown Itoh ) has greatly shrunk in size by 50% this spring . Unfortunately, it has not bloomed. It is about 5 years old. Not sure what I can do about it .
@kaywhygg6980 Жыл бұрын
Do you have to divide them? I want a nice huge bush like they usually are . Can i put in a huge pot and then transplant then after a year or so? Almost 50 yrs heavy clay soil n rocks outside by my sidewalk so its 2 sides concrete I’m not sure if I should go in along the concrete one side is about 8 inches away the other side maybe 10-12

RE: Question on Digging, Dividing & Moving Peonies Video I don't really know the best solutions to her problem. I have consulted with a local grower of peonies who feels the same as I do and that is.... She does NOT need to divide. She can move and hold in large pots but only if she can find a place to bury the pot outside (pot MUST have drainage). The digging will depend on the area that gives her the most access to the roots. I recommend that she could also send her questions the the Canadian Peony Society web page where her question will be directed to other growers who might have experience in doing this. Can you divide peonies in the spring as well? Or only in the fall?
@oshawacity2 жыл бұрын
Fall is the ideal time to split peonies as it allows the dormant, divided plants time to settle in. Dividing in the spring will stress the plant as it is just beginning to put out new growth. The plant may not flower, or worse, if split in the spring.

CAN U TRANSPLANT PEONIES IN SPRING? DIG UP AND DEVIDE THEM TO MOVE THEM OR ONLY IN SPRING TO TRANSPLANT?
@oshawacity4 ай бұрын
Thanks for the question. Early fall is the best time to dig up, divide, move and/or transplant an established peony in the garden.

will the root left in the original site regrow?
@oshawacity2 жыл бұрын
If there are “eyes” left on the root that is replanted then new growth will emerge in the spring.
@Whipporwhill7 ай бұрын
The left behind root pieces of lactiflora peonies can develop crown/eye tissue & form a new plant. This takes a couple of years to occur & is another method of propagation. Look up adventitious roots for more info.
