I can only have admiration for someone who is narrating whilst balancing and pushing hazel into the ground, shaping and fastening it🤣. Great video and will give this a try. I only have one peony at the moment, so it should be a quick job. Best wishes from Lottie in Suffolk.

This is a good method if you have hazel canes or something like, and you don't have a lot of peonies. The method I use is to drive two stakes into the ground at the 3 and 9 o'clock position, about 6-10 inches out from the main root ball. (all depends on size of plant). Then I put a sort of "girdle" of woven wire fencing that encircles the plants, only about 14-18 inches tall, just tall enough to keep the flowerheads from flopping to the ground. I leave the stakes in permanently, only remove the fencing in the winter when I trim the foliage to the ground. If the peonies are on a slope, it's only necessary to run the fence on the downhill side of the clump.

How can wood be more sustainable than metal?

Truly strange question. What about industrial extraction of metal, production process, transport etc. etc. Hazel is very easy to grow, totally undemanding, fast and...it is grown and coppiced 90 seconds away from where Troy was using it! You cannot be more sustainable than that! (I live 10 minutes from Sissinghurst and Troy is an old friend, colleague and even my former boss. So, first hand information).
