I think crime is worse now than when I left and, like Brittany, the last year I lived there I only left my apartment when I needed to. I didn't feel unsafe but I just got tired of being around people all the time. Plus it only takes 1-2 unstable people to put a crimp in your day. I remember taking the A Train to work at 6:30AM on a weekday morning. A guy got on at 125th street and started preaching the bible at the top of his lungs all the way to 59th street, which is about a 20 minute ride. No one could get away from him and no one said anything because he was obviously crazy and no one wanted to provoke him further. New York and LA are cultural focal points because all of our media comes out of these places. It can feel like you're nowhere if you're not there. As I get older, I'm happy as hell to live off the beaten path, where people smile and say "good morning" as I walk my dog (and they're neither schizo homeless or weird silicone rich people), where I have easy access to the wilderness, where the air is clean, where I can find community and culture that isn't derived from the internet. It's good livin.

The NYC city limits are the closest approximation to being near a Harry Potter dementor. There's one horrendous apartment bloc in particular that as soon as I pass it on the highway, I just start feeling like something is wrong for no reason. Yeah, I'll take my middle-of-nowhere forest road any day.

I am from New York City, born and raised. People who claim to be from this city and complain about it are liars and weak. While crime rates have increased, it is mostly limited to low-income areas. Additionally, NYC is not the most violent city in New York State; Albany and Syracuse have higher rates. Those who admit to not liking NYC are usually people who moved here with dreams and failed. However, NYC has always been a challenging place to live, and success is not guaranteed. I grew up in Southside, Jamaica Queens, but I was able to leave the hood, attend college and grad school, have articles published, work in private equity, and now own successful businesses. NYC is a crooked and corrupted city, but it also has many great things to offer, such as jazz clubs, amazing parks, the Met Opera, HipHop, the philharmonic, great great restaurants (last night, I went to Wolfgang Puck’s restaurant at the Four Seasons in the financial district; great food), museums, art exhibitions, fashion, and more. I travel the world and live in Greece half the year, but there is nothing like NYC. It's an abusive relationship-i hate it and love it-and, those who make it here are a different breed. Anyone who complains about NYC is weak and a failure. It has never been branded as an easy place to make it in.

You know it is weird. I ukraine Ever since I was little I heard things like "it's an american standard" or "like in europe". Older people still use the phrase "euro renovation" just meaning the apartment where most things are less than 10 years old. My friend moved to Glasgow and it is way less comfortable there. She lived in kyiv her whole life and never got jumped in her life. and after 6 months in Glasgow it happened several times. And it is generally more orderly during war, but the gap is huge still. And now when people who never wend abroad say "american" or "european" meaning well organised or of high quality... I just sethe a bit every time cuz I was to San Fr, paris, frankfurt, berlin... Cool places in a way, but still fucked up. Prague, Vienna, Lubljana, budapest and Bratislava... Those are nice, way less fucked up.

Tokyo, New York, Shanghai etc are all going to need to change. Architects and city planners need to acknowledge the need for open spaces in cities rather than building apartments everywhere. The importance of parks and less populous CBDs are very crucial to the flow of traffic and the wellbeing of people. Its hard to explain, but essentially I'm talking about making big cities less populous. Which essentially means less apartments, and/or Apartments with more character to them (more liveable spaces). I've seen cities like London and Athens where there is no room to drive, to walk or to live humbly in a place you can call your refuge. All these big cities are infested with tiny little spaces and I'd imagine peoole feel like rats living through cracks. It would be great someday to see a megacity that has wide roads, big pavements and houses/Apartments that are very sizeable that have views to parks or long broadways rather than congested concrete walls. New York is like that because it's a very old city that was established and planned to fit as many people/workers as it can into the confines of its walls. As close as it can to industrial centres. The problem with this is that New York cant change. To try and restructure it would mean tearing down everything. Sewage, power and any other public commodity has stood the same for 100 years with gradual reconstruction. It means that for now... New York is stuck being as it is for a long time.

Yikes. There’s some pretty bad sh*holes in Texas (native Texan near Austin) BUT I would NEVER move to NY. I’m already way too annoyed that I have to walk my laundry from the bedroom to the garage, I would just become one of those bums if I had no washer and dryer. Then you tack on the fact that you can’t have a dishwasher or separate spaces for your personal sanctuary. NOPE! I’m happy to have my acre of a yard, with a hot arse smelly garage that holds my washer and dryer and my very old dishwasher that looks into my living room. Super thankful. Movies and tv really hyped up NY for many of us, for sure!

I visit Montreal frequently and the difference between the people living 5 hours away is night and day. I also understand that women in the NYC are scared but it's also not a great feeling for a woman to sprint down the street just because you two are the only ones on a block together at night. P.S. I'm from NY... I'm just gonna say it... when you're born in NY you're really BUILT different. You're accustomed to the things that happen in NY. The other day some crazy guy was thowing himself back and forth in a train cart. Two weeks ago some guy threw a wine bottle from his apartment window which landed in the street. Are these things disturbing? yeah they are. But you build a callus. These people moving to NY from cities or towns that are peaceful and uneventful don't have that callus. They're not built for it. NY may be stressful but it is the best city in the world. You just gotta be built to love it.

Not everyone is made for cities. Like especially those raised in not big cities, maybe even in rural areas, like the 1st girl. I also get anxious and dont get all the hype whenever I go to big cities, like Chicago or San Francisco. All the noise and smell and just compact people, shoulder-to-shoulder. Some thrive in that environment and love it. Some prefer a quieter environment with more space and stuff. I grew up in a city of 130k population and it was a great size, 20 mins to drive across town max and not too big but not too small. Now I live outside a rural small city and have my own house with a big yard and garden etc. I like this for the quiet and small town feel. I do miss having like endless options of going out to eat, going to the mall or countless strip malls/shopping centers. But i think for sure, ive saved a ton of money just not having access to unlimited stores within minutes and i limit shopping online. I would NEVER want to live in a big city. And i love driving a car and the independence it brings...
