The only thing I could never approve of is how they treated Jerry on the show. But I reckon it wouldn’t be the same if they didn’t, maybe it’s one of the factors that make parks and rec such a great show. Who knows(?)

This is the ONE thing I hate about Parks and Rec. The mean-spiritedness that takes everyone over when dealing with Jerry often breaks with their established characters. It turns into bullying, and the last time I tried bingeing this again, I realised it had been ruined for me by relentless kindness of Schitt's Creek.

You don’t have to use the word fat to fat shame. In a time when people want to “see themselves” in TV and movie characters, every time they arbitrarily belittled Jerry, I was reminded of my own struggles to be taken seriously as a heavy person. No, they never made a direct joke about his weight. But would people have responded well if they treated a black, gay, or Muslim character like they did Jerry? Sorry for the soapbox. I love almost every other part of Parks and Rec. But Jerry just makes me sigh sadly.

Oppressed can be debated, but discrimination is undeniable. Weight bias affects job prospects, healthcare, and social opportunities. "It’s literally illegal to be gay in some countries." True, and that’s horrific. But acknowledging one form of discrimination doesn’t invalidate another. Discrimination based on weight is also harmful and pervasive. "In some cultures being bigger is actually desired." You mean in a few African tribes and some Polynesian islands? That’s not the reality for the majority of the world, especially here in the USA, where thinness is often idealized. "And you said it yourself 'they never directly made a joke about his weight.'" Directly calling out his weight isn’t necessary for it to be a factor. LeVar Burton, for instance, expressed concerns about his Geordi character on "Star Trek" never having a stable relationship, fearing it reinforced stereotypes about black men and relationships, even though race was never directly addressed. People make associations and these can reinforce harmful stereotypes.

Unless you have a medical condition preventing weight loss being overweight is not permanent. Being overweight affects job opportunities requiring physical activity. Being overweight affects your ability to be physically active. It affects healthcare because you’re not healthy. You cannot prevent being gay or being black. You can (outside of certain medical conditions) prevent being overweight. Like I’ve said being overweight is unhealthy and without medical conditions is not permanent. Comparing weight based discrimination to racism and homophobia does absolutely invalid racism and homophobia. They never made a joke about his weight. He’s also around the same size as Donna who is regularly shown to be successful in her social/dating/economic pursuits. It’s a common trope to have someone to “pick on” in a sitcom. Parks and rec had Jerry and the office had Toby. There’s even the whole “Tom is the new Jerry” episode. It’s not about his weight. Should overweight characters be treated differently? Would the treatment of Jerry be more okay with you if he was thin?
