Absolutely agree. I've always believed in action economy: either choose moves that have more options, or make your moves have more options. Going backwards should be more than just getting away from your opponent, it should be a setup, a bait, a feint, an angle--not because it's always going to pay off, but because you're ready for the chance that it can.
@iamshredder35874 ай бұрын
That's some clever thinking buddy. Good logic and reasoning. Nicely written and spelled out too. I'm impressed, and I'm rarely impressed by yt comments in general let alone on matters of fighting. (They're often some of the worst haha) "Action economy" huh? I'll have to remember that one. Quite a fitting term really. You made that up yourself or were taught about it? I've learnt of economy of motion and such but don't think I've heard that term before. I think the logic behind it is something I've learnt and applied though... in fight training as well as in business, and probably other things.... just naturally and generally though over the years as I got better and gained more skillsets and experience. Never really specific and systematically like that though. For eg a beginner in grappling who's just learnt a double leg or a rnc will dive in and try relentless to get them and when it doesn't go their way they get all lost and confused and just keep trying or give up or whatever. Whereas a experienced grappler has a whole host of options available from there and can even like feint or fail the shot on purpose to set the opponent up for another technique. Anyway that's how I'm understanding it basically. Something to think about. Thanks bro. Well done. :))
@Cavouku4 ай бұрын
@iamshredder3587 I actually got the term from turn-based games, especially card games like Magic: the Gathering. When building the deck, or playing the cards, you have to be thoughtful about how much "value" you're getting out of each card, what kind of reactions your opponents will have to you playing it, and what you can get from the interaction even if it doesn't go exactly as planned. I feel a couple examples can help show what I mean. The Kimura is a great technique, not just because it can finish a fight, but because if it doesn't work you can often use it to get your opponent into a new position. Triangles can chain into an armbar or a sweep given the right circumstances. Jabs might have the best action economy in the fight game, because not only does it take little energy to throw a standard jab, but it can measure the distance to your opponent, do some damage in the right case, and it often blocks your opponent's vision, letting you follow up with a combo or change position. A drop-step overhand is a great technique (Josh Emmet knocked out Bryce Mitchell with one in brutal fashion at UFC 296), because if it misses, you've potentially got a collar tie, and you've stepped into a great angle to use it for a leg sweep takedown like Osoto-gari. Calf kicks are another great example. Wrist control and/or underhooks are almost always worth looking for in a grapple. Sprawl control can go to a D'Arce, anaconda, necktie, guillotine, and more. The list goes on and on

I’m a come forward fighter, always. I was in a boxing match with a guy, and we fought like we were in a phone booth. First two rounds go like that, Third round, I have a moment when I realise- step back and and throw! I was against it, as not my natural way but I wanted to beat this guy. We had settled into a rhythm with the first two rounds. I step back and hammered him with a back hand into a lead hook. He looked stunned, tried to move forward, I fired off three straights. Suddenly he didn’t know what to do. I found room and broke the rhythm enough to offset his mindset, then I went back in phonebox fighting, feeling strong and knowing he was struggling after I had connected those clean shots from that brief stint on the back foot.

What really confuses me about trying to insinuate that learning how to fight moving backwards isn’t important is the inherent arrogant implications of it. So do they just assume that there’s never going to be a match when they’re clearly forced to retreat in the middle of an exchange? What if you’re chasing down Your opponent is the absolute worst thing you can do due to a stylistic disadvantage and baiting them while moving in reverse is a safer alternative? Do they just ignore that option entirely? What if their fighter is naturally gifted at that style? Are they going to just waste that potential?

Stipe Miocic knocked out Fabricio Werdum that way. Floyd Mayweather would slowly step away from his opponent, establish a rhythm for them to follow, then throw a pull-counter and knock them down or hurt them enough to land another safe combo which would eventually lead to a stoppage or a clean win on the scorecards. Its possible to hit while retreating and even knock people out. Cory Sandhagen would explode with a defensive knee while pulling back. Stephen Thompson wrecked Vicente Luque with side kicks and counters while retreating. Yair Rodriguez would throw roundhouse kicks and elbows while moving back too, having taken a page from Jon Jones's book. Great fighters know how to do it. Thanks for the video!

It’s because most people obsessed with fighting on the retreat are spending too much time retreating. You’re better off staying planted so you have more power, then defend and counter your opponent with in range. You also can’t move. Adesanya spends most of his time fighting on the back foot, and that got him dropped by Sean Strickland who just walked him down.

Like counter punching isn’t important and the majority of those aren’t on the back foot because once again people advance when attacking imagine that. Can’t believe people talked crap. What you say is the truth that’s no bullshit. Fighting is a dance between your opponent to optimize power, evade strikes, and get your opponent off balance allowing you to move in undetected or to minimize personal damage while simultaneously inflicting as much damage on your opponent. This means being able to fight moving in all directions. This is one of the main reasons people get knocked out they get no respect when backed up because they won’t throw punches to signal danger to the opponent thereby giving him no reason to stop. Keep up the good knowledge, don’t listen to the 🤡 posse everybody thinks their expert world champion behind their screens.
