I lived in Buffalo for nine years, including the blizzard of ‘77. With no vehicle and only a radio to provide information, I still managed to walk to the store to buy sufficient supplies (and carry them home) to last me a month so I could safely hole up in my walk-up apartment. Classes at UB stopped for a while. Announcements were made over the radio for different needs, such as for folks willing to loan their 4-wheel-drive type vehicles to serve as ambulances. Shoveling became almost an art form. Eventually the snow all melted and life resumed.

Frankly, I don't recall there being any connection between any blizzards and looting or other property crime so I'm not sure why you mention that there wasn't any looting in 1978. Maybe people are just obsessed with the idea that looting and/or rioting are common. Both are actually very rare occurrences.

@@martyk1156 Very true. I know a lot of homes in the city don't have garages. Some still have carriage house which included a small stable for the family horse. Not big enough for a car, unless remodeled. But with the age of the structures, better off to demolish it and build a garage. Except for the Humboldt park area. Those houses and structures are "protected" by the historical preservation people. I drove for a wheelchair van company, this one woman, (wheelchair bound) wasn't allowed to have an outside elevator on her porch so she could be a bit more independent. @SilentNoMore64
@SilentNoMore64 Жыл бұрын
I was worried about that too. Because this is Buffalo, sub pumps are mandatory for all houses. Insurance will not cover water damage from flooding if there isn't a back up battery installed in them. If the power goes so does the pump. Fortunately, not many people are having that problem. Thankfully, our local government has removed much of the snow to other areas.
@SilentNoMore64
@SilentNoMore64 Жыл бұрын
@@rupe53 That is not an accurate statement. Your figuring is not even close. Rework your calculations regarding air space. Take geological configuration and snow placement which is compacted because of the force from plows. Drifts are different. The difference in air space in drifts as opposed to slush and compacted snow is substantial. Then there is lake "effect snow". As Buffalo is surrounded by a great deal of water, you can only imagine how much heavier it is due to the large amount of water within each flake....... am I boring you yet?🤔
@rupe53
@rupe53 Жыл бұрын
@@SilentNoMore64 .... yeah, there are minor variations is the snow versus rain ratio, but when the forecast is for 5 feet of snow it's got nothing to do with slush or plow packed measurements. That's not how the weather guys work. My whole point here is people get all in a panic about the water content and it's not as much as they think..... by a long shot. It also can't melt fast enough to cause general flooding.

We all know that every city in this country is ill prepared for bad weather. Stop putting politics in everything, there was absolutely no way to fully prepare for this. You can't hide from mother nature, be happy you're alive and safe.

I’ve lived in Duluth MN & spent time in Buffalo & both cities are similar in size but Duluth gets FAR worse weather than Buffalo & they don’t get weeks of 55-60 degree weather in January where it all melts. It’s there til late March. I don’t understand how so many people died from this storm in Buffalo when this is a winter occurrence in Duluth with no deaths, no injuries; nothing. Is it demographic differences and lack of common sense from a lot of people in Buffalo?

This was not a little snowstorm. It was a blizzard, with 4’ of snow falling while wind was gusting up to 75 miles per hour for almost 2 days, with wind chills up to -25° F. Snow drifts were up to 8 feet. Many homes lost power. Emergency vehicles & plows were even getting stuck. Buffalo is used to snow & we usually have no problem dealing with it. Just had up to 8 feet if snow in November. I remember the blizzard of 1977. I thought this was worse. Stuck in my house for 4 days for Christmas. Not fun!

@@BD-rs8qx Maybe you need to pay closer attention to the news. Rents are going crazy rising $500-$1000/month for a two bedroom in Florida. The Republicans just screwed over homeowners who are having their insurance rise over double and triple over the past couple of years. And let's not talk about getting hit by hurricanes.

They haven't "lost everything" !! Yes it's difficult ,, it's gonna take a couple weeks to dig out !! This isn't the first blizzard and it won't be the last !! CHECK ON ALL YOUR NEIGHBORS !!! (especially the elderly and those with kids) YOU MIGHT HAVE TO BE THEIR HERO !! if they need food or water , try to get it to them !!! HELP WITH THE DIGGING OUT !! start with your sidewalk , then the neighbors !! If there are 10 people on the block who can shovel ,,, WORK TOGETHER TO GET THE SIDEWALKS CLEAR !! if you can get to work , then keep going to work . Ask your boss if he can help with food for your neighbors !! Blankets and jackets and hats !! Good job !! From a patriot in Detroit !!
