I moved to California in 1996 when I graduated from university during the tech boom. When I first arrived in Nor Cal, I honestly thought to myself that I could never see myself leaving. it was an amazing place at the time. 14 years later in 2010, I left and never looked back. California is NOT the same state it was in the 80s and 90s. Ridiculous cost of living. Huge spike in crime. Terrible services. I was born and raised in San Diego and lived there for 57 years. Never, in my wildest dreams, did I ever think I would leave San Diego, one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Thanks to the damage that the Democrat party and Gavin Newsom have done to the state of CA I was forced to leave. Arizona is my home now. My values are no longer represented in CA. San Diego was once a Republican stronghold in CA and when the city government went from Republican to Democrat (it was run by Republicans for the first 50 years of my life) things turned bad. Taxes, regulations, gas prices, home prices, the education system, homeless problem, and crime rate forced me to leave. CA is gone and it will never be the same. There is no middle class left in CA. There is just the "haves and have nots ". Democrats destroy everything.

A majority of those originally from Los Angeles had left the city many years ago because of the large number of people not just moving into the city but demanding that the city change to how they want it to be instead of adapting to how the natives of Los Angeles were. When I was in college I lived half a block from the beach and I paid my rent, utilities, etc delivering pizza part time. Second, California culture is gone. We grew up on surfing and going to punk rock shows. The surfing is still there but the laid back surf culture is kind of gone. Music is dead. And the mass influx of immigrants from all different places chopped up the culture into a thousand different sub cultures with no cohesion. So all we are left with that makes California special is good weather and nice beaches. That's great an all, but if you are working all the time to pay the huge premium that now comes with, is it worth it. Meh, probably not. I'm still here but I no longer love it.

Cost of living has nothing to do with it. My home is paid for and we left. Rich people left. It has always been crazy high cost. The culture is gone. Immigration and decades of taking the most liberal people from every state have ruined the morals of the state. Progressive policies are destructive.

I was a cop in SoCal. I moved my family to east Tennessee a year ago. If you are a Republican, come here. Top reasons in order of importance: 1) Responsible, friendly, middle class people who will jump at a chance to help you. 2)Low taxes. No income tax. Ridiculously low vehicle registration tax and 1/3rd the property tax of California. 3)Lower prices. $3 gas. Lower grocery prices. Lower housing prices. If you sell your house in California and use that cash to buy here, you might find yourself in a mansion on 10 acres with a pond. 4) Wonderfull weather. I love the thunderstorms. It seems to rain once a week so everything is clean and green. No tornados here. Just the right amount of snow 2-5 inches for a month. It is more humid here, but it only hits you when you pick up a shovel. 5) low crime. Clean streets. Almost no homeless. 6) No traffic and no lines. 7) Fireworks and guns! You still have your freedoms here (Sullivan county).

I've known and even worked with Californians that moved to NE Kansas once they got close to retirement age. These are people who grew up in California in the 1950's and 60's. These people moved here in the mid 90's to early 2000 period. I ask them why here? They felt like the California they loved had already been ruined. Plus they could afford a nice house here, belong to a country club where they could actually get a tee time. The cost of living is reasonable, they could find jobs they liked that were part time, the people are friendly and the city is very attractive with lots of hills, trees, parks and flower beds all over the city. They felt like their quality of life was better. I've spent time in California from the south to the north over the years. I felt like San Francisco already had a problem twenty years ago. The last time I was there was 06 and I swore I'd never go back.

The west coast is due for the next Cascadia/San Andreas fault earthquake and comfort will disappear in an instant. And the cycle starts a new.

Until those people suffer enough under this lame progressive orthodoxy we've been enjoying which has been ruinous to businesses and had large numbers of people moving away and cost residents enough money personally to where they're dipping into savings or doing without - maybe then they'll wake up and we will then find 'the bottom'.

It’s really sad, because I’m born and raised in California too. To see what it once was, to see what it’s become now is disgusting. I’ve voted democrat for most of my life, and stopped a few years ago. at some point when you see the same party, continuously make bad decisions, I don’t see how you can continue to support them. Even if you don’t agree with republicans, which I don’t on a lot of issues. At this point, what do we have to lose? With the super majority democrats have in this state, it’s like they don’t even have to try to take care of their voters. People always vote along party lines anyway. My wife and I are also doing our research to leave and just go anywhere else but California.

Oh, it's beautiful in California for sure, a whole lot of different kinds of beautiful in a lot of different places. And for years now it's been "a nice place to visit, but you wouldn't want to live there." But now, sadly, it's not even a nice place to visit, at least not the airport that gets you there. It's hard to commit to stepping over turds and needles and unconscious homeless people in order to depart from there for Yosemite or the redwoods. My wife's family is from California, and I've spent my share of very good times there, but for years I have joked that the state motto should be changed to, "Blessed by God, doomed by man."

Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom assumed office on January 7, 2019. His second term will end on January 4, 2027. An overview based on people leaving the state. People are leaving California for various reasons, driven by both economic and personal factors. HIGH COST OF LIVING: Housing Costs: California's housing market is notoriously expensive. While other states such as New York and Hawaii also have high housing costs, California's combination of high prices, limited supply, and significant income disparity makes it the state with the highest housing prices relative to income. TAXES: The state with the highest taxes in the nation is California. This includes a combination of state income tax, sales tax, and property tax. California has a progressive income tax system with the highest top marginal tax rate in the country, reaching up to 13.3% for high-income earners. The state has a base sales tax rate of 7.25%, which is among the highest in the nation. Local jurisdictions can add their own sales taxes, leading to combined rates that can exceed 10% in some areas. While California's property tax rates are not the highest in the nation, the HIGH PROPERTY VALUES result in significant property tax bills. As of 2024, the average cost of a house in California varies significantly depending on the region, but statewide, the median home price is approximately $760,000. HOUSING SHORTAGE: Limited housing supply and strict zoning laws have led to a significant housing shortage, making it difficult for many people to find affordable housing options. In 2023, California saw approximately 110,000 housing starts. This figure includes both single-family and multi-family housing units. HOMELESSNESS CRISIS: The state has a high rate of homelessness, particularly in urban areas like Los Angeles and San Francisco, contributing to concerns about safety and quality of life. California has the largest number of homeless people in the United States. As of the latest available data in 2023, California ACCOUNTED for about 30% of the nation’s homeless population. The mild climate in many parts of California can make living outdoors more feasible than in states with harsher weather conditions, attracting homeless individuals from other regions. NATURAL DISASTERS: Frequent natural disasters, such as wildfires, earthquakes, and droughts, pose significant risks and inconveniences, prompting some residents to relocate to areas with fewer environmental threats. California typically experiences the largest number of wildfires and acres burned annually compared to other states in the United States. California is frequently cited as the state that experiences the most severe and widespread droughts in the United States QUALITY OF LIFE: Issues like traffic congestion, long commute times, and pollution in major cities can negatively impact the quality of life for many Californians. Otherwise, California tends to rank in the middle to upper tier among U.S. states. ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITIES ELSEWHERE: Other states offer comparable or better job opportunities, often with lower costs of living and better business climates, attracting Californians to relocate. California’s economy has shown signs of strain recently. The state is in the middle of back-to-back multi-billion dollar budget deficits because of declines in state tax revenue. California’s unemployment rate is 5.3%, which is above the national average and the highest of any state. POLITICAL CLIMATE: Some residents are dissatisfied with California's political climate, which they feel is too liberal or not aligned with their personal beliefs and values. BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT: High business taxes and stringent regulations can make it challenging for businesses to thrive, leading companies and entrepreneurs to move to states with more favorable business environments. RETIREMENT: Many retirees seek to stretch their retirement savings further by moving to states with lower living costs, better tax benefits, and milder climates. These factors collectively contribute to the trend of people leaving California in search of more affordable, less stressful living conditions, and better opportunities elsewhere.

He was just using it as a random example. He was kinda pointing it out as an abstraction, as in the idea of moving anywhere outside of California was merely theoretical, but not something you'd actually do in practice. Cherry Hill, NJ is place you might have heard of if you grew up in CA, but would never consider going to because you lived in California. Some Californian are still of that kind of mindset that Adam is talking about, even though the state has changed for the worse. Many Californians are of the mindset that they live in the best state in the USA. They turn a blind eye to the corruption and horrible policies and live in a state of denial.

Unfortunately the discussion here really isn't a California problem, it's an American problem or even a global problem. No politician or party admits to their mistakes and tries corrective action. It's a damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead tactic on every issue. That idea can be warranted at times but both parties and the majority of politicians stay the course no matter how damming. That's what appeals to their base and gets them reelected or retains the power. The best idea that I could come up with is to never vote an incumbent even if that means voting the opposite party. However that idea would take such a high percentage to be effective first and then the issues wouldn't correct for years anyway. People are mostly going to vote their one way the majority of the time. It's a sinking ship and the idea that we're almost bottoming out has been spoken in a couple industry sectors for years. The truth is, we've flatlined and if someone thinks we'll be able to right the ship before capsizing is naive. A revolution will happen before any major correction. Maybe that's in a decade or two or a century or two and all that would do is cause a lot of death and destruction and declare one majority superior over the other until the factions become large again. It's the nature of a political landscape.

Its not just the Governor and the Legislature. Its the people as well. They're just as insufferable and stifling. They hate progress, they are narcissistic, they are insecure, they are neurotic, they are quick to anger, they only think short-term, and they are loud and obnoxious. There are many good people in California, but a good 60% or more are as I described above. California was the token destination for so long that it attracted the worst in the country and from abroad as well as the good. However there has been a terminal number of bad people who have entered and lived in the state for too long. California is now dysfunctional and a lost cause. Whats the point of good weather and good food when you're taxed to death and the roads aren't even as good as the roads in Ohio.
