Thank you for this! I remember reading People of the Lie by Dr. Scott Peck many years ago, when I was a young woman. At that time in my life, I was just beginning my journey of spiritual and emotional healing from the profoundly abusive family I grew up in. Back then, I didn't even know I had been abused; rather I believed all the terrible lies I was told about myself. That book was the beginning of opening my mind to the truth of what happened to me, and the true nature of the people who raised me. It's over 30 years later, and I've learned and grown so much. I know the difference between mental illness and true evil. There is treatment and hope for those with mental illness, but not so for the evil ones. Truly evil entities don't feel there's anything wrong with them, and they enjoy how they live, and how they destroy others. There's no help for them, because they don't want to be helped. It's best to just keep a distance from those sorts, if at all possible.

I enjoyed most his battle to heal CHarlotte, who was chillingly stuck in her deceptive evil approach to being and living. The fact that she was in therapy was ultimately a ruse and more representative of a cat playing with a mouse she had caught than any real attempt at acknowledging her evil and making a commitment to wellness, truth, light. I enjoyed her dream of her beautiful machine and his interpretation of this as loving her own mechanisms for distortion more than anything else. Wicked egocentrism. @@drlepora1

These all describe a narcissist /NPD. And yes they are truly evil. But the fourth criteria is not always the case and depends on the type of narcissist. It can be non-calculated and only to gain control or supply for the moment even if it may seem calculated. And the fifth is sometimes but definitely not alwyas the case, there are many covert narcissists and they are truly evil but often fly under the radar.

Excellent breakdown of this topic. The book rambles through a long case study in the beginning and gives no insight into what Dr. Peck’s intention is. At least the audio book works this way. Did I miss the part that you just outlined so clearly? Throughout history people of the lie have pretty much ruled the world while people of the truth have struggled to push back. Loved the point you made that the book’s author couldn’t help clients because they had no psychiatric problems rather his patients were simply evil-a very important realization that people genuine people must take note of and defend themselves against the harm that can result when trying to help someone that can’t be helped. If you are a student of NPD and related personality disorders such as the Dark Triad, you’ll find many correlations to POTL. Yet POTL is really Cluster B personality disorders on steroids!! A simple example would be narcissistic personality disorder which can’t be treated because it seems it more properly falls into the POTL category,

I will never forget trying to read that book for the first time when I was so naïve to the ways of humans, especially those within my own family. I was given the book by someone who told me they thought I might find it interesting and I couldn’t figure out why they would give me that book. I started reading it and thought it was the dumbest book I’d ever read thinking humans just aren’t like that. I could not relate to the book at all because it seemed a huge over exaggeration. Wow sadly FlashForward beginning in 2013. I was introduced to a world of evil that I didn’t even know existed. My own family. Too long of a story but I sure wish I knew then what I know now. Evil is real people. The Bible is real. Evil walks among us and let me tell you something the ones in your own family and within your own circle just as the Bible describes will be the ones who are out to kill, steal and destroy everything in your life.
