I am doing a talk at my local SWP branch meeting in Dublin tonight. The topic is Margaret Thatcher and the legacy of Thatcherism.I thought the general feeling about this woman would be one of disgust and loathing.I was wrong because since yesterday I have heard some of the most incredible revisionism regarding this woman's policies and the politics of her class. The decimation and privatization of British industry, the breaking of unions, the criminalizing of the miners are just some of her crimes.

I was half expecting you to simply say send a boat to pickup the Islanders. I personally would have done the same as her in this circumstance. I don't think there is any alternative. Diplomacy wouldn't have worked, and it would have left the UK with an image of weakness that it would not to this day have shaken off.

I would have flown over a bunch of Spanish teachers and let them get on with it!!!!!

Okay I will bite, what do you think the correct response would have been when the Argentine military junta invaded the Falkland Islands. Bearing in mind it's a British protected territory with 3000 British tax payers, and the Junta had made 30000 people disappear for opposition to their rule. I'm genuinely curious to know what you would have done in her place, I may even agree with you.

@Aaron NoneYa I've never heard anyone claim it was planned. To be honest I wouldn't put it past her, but it's the first I've heard of it. The fact that she withdrew forces as a cost cutting exercise which drew in Argentina interest is known, but never talked of. Edit: Same as Churchill, when people like me point out bad shit we get called woke. Because being awake is apparently a bad thing, the hero's we celebrate are largely not worth it, their motives, their history is always worth looking at.

I know that I would not have sent British soldiers off to die to boost my falling approval ratings because I do not and could not ever think the way she did. There is no question that the military junta in Argentina were fascist and were more than willing to send their poorly trained conscripts to die just to boost their popularity at home and enforce their claim on what they believed was their sovereign territory.I would have exhausted all avenues of diplomacy before a military campaign started

Many who claim to be working class actually have never worked and live on generous benefits. They should thank the real working class.

He hecho amigo.

That is to say nothing of the crime of the Falklands war in which 255 British service men, 649 Argentinian servicemen, and 3 Falkland islanders died just to boost this woman's popularity. This woman's pre Falklands approval ratings were the lowest in polling history,41% according to IPSOS, then 59% post Falklands. The savagery of her right wing policies in Britain, Northern Ireland and internationally are still felt to this day.I for one am in no doubt as to who and what this person was.
