@xavi-kun3 жыл бұрын
@@AccipiterSmith That is certainly a difficult question to answer. Based on my current understanding, I would argue that the Philippines benefited from Cory’s presidency. Particularly in terms of economy as during the final years of Marcos’s presidency, the Philippines was actually experiencing negative economic growth. However, no administration is perfect and this rings just as much for Cory’s presidency, with events such as the Mendiola Massacre being one of its many blunders. Despite this, it could also be argued that the fact an atrocity such as Mendiola is as widely known as it is because Cory’s rule had also managed to bring back something important: freedom of speech. Because of this freedom, the press were able to report the truth and thus knowledge of the incident is widespread. While Mendiola was a tragedy, bear in mind it was only one incident in her 6 years as President, compared to no less than 12 massacres that occurred between 1981 and 1982 under the Marcos administration that are mostly unknown.

Even if things were to get worse from here, a movement like this will never be for naught and did accomplish great things. Nowadays, the People Power Revolution is looked down upon from the right-wing groups and politicians of Philippine Politics as it cause quite the political turmoil within the 80s and early 90s and the following administration (Cory Administration) didn't addressed the dreaded economic impact of the Marcos Dictatorship until the mid-90s, when the economy started to gradually rise. It wasn't until the early-2010s that we fully recovered from the economic dread caused by the Marcos. I could understand the sentiments of the right-winged people But during '86, it must be a phenomenon time for the Philippine populace to revolt against a regime that has hampered national development and siphoned billions of pesos to the Philippine public, and I understand this rhetoric. The revolution was not the problem, the one who's leading it (Cory) was the problem. The revolution was needed to topple a despotic leader at the time, but unfortunately, that Marcos was succeeded by a woman who has little understanding and background of Philippine politics and only became popular because she was the wife of the supposed leader of the non-revolutionary movement. Perhaps if it was the Senator that was assassinated (Benigno Aquino) or Salvador Laurel, who advocated for a federation and economic reforms, that will lead the movement, perhaps more people will think more positively about the revolution.

Similar to what happened in EDSA Dos, if it werent for the military, both Cory and Gloria wouldnt have been presidents. Also tbf, the People Power Revolution all came about because of the failure of RAM's coup attempt a day prior since the CIA leaked it to Marcos. Everything was in place but just so happened that they were discovered first before they got to implement it, but they already had their groundwork. The Defense Ministry and Constabulary were already secured thanks to Enrile and Ramos, with Honasan securing the Scout Rangers. The RAM conspiracy spread far and wide as well so the coup already had a strong military backing. The conspiracy however did not only involve the military but also the civilians and who else to better mobilize the public than the current face of the opposition that is Cory Aquino and the Catholic Church with Cardinal Sin as its figurehead. So even if the coup's plans failed, the mobilization of the public was a massive enormous success. Just as with any coup you have to have the perfect mix of military backing and civilian legitimacy - this time, it was perfect despite how horribly it was performed.
