The "messy" aesthetic. If a pretty girl wears some oversized hoodie and sweatpants to class, she's effortlessly cute for being natural and chill. If an ugly or overweight person wears the same thing, they are seen as careless and lazy

Alessandro Botti Not true at all. At least not in ALL cases. You even see it in some youtubers, like FouseyTube is a great example. He wasn’t careless or lazy, he was just really really busy with making a career on KZbin and he went from pretty fit guy to overweight over the years before he started working out again. And another KZbind AfroSenju, he’s not fat by any means right now but because he put so much time into KZbin and trying to start a career you can see his face is a little chubbier nowadays.

@SomethingScanning In Ancient Greece, the monobrow was considered beautiful as well. I also love them and try to cultivate mine. It adds a sort of austere, piercing elegance, in my opinion. Large penises were also considered unattractive in Ancient Greece as a mark of animalistic, thuggish and uncivilised nature or something like that. (Gotta say, I kind of agree with that one, too.) Psychologically, there's not much we can do to convince our minds that their assumptions are wrong. The most I can do is make an effort to ignore initial impressions and judge based on behavioural observation.

Both genders gain social advantages from being attractive, but for women that can also come with an increased threat of stalking, rape, and other violent crimes, and if you're an introverted person you might get stressed out from having a huge amount of sexual attention focused on you. Or: keep to ourselves. Ugly people (though I doubt you all look that bad, I just have no interest in 3D peeps), or those who think they are ugly when they could pass off as above average if tried, are generally either bitter and have learned far more often than those who were born beautiful while getting what they wanted. They worked harder(maybe), suffered more(most likely), and are the ones who are purposefully ignored (70% sure on this). Try disappearing, someone is going to start missing you. I don’t care whether you were/are bullied or someone else’s free therapist, try disappearing and people will start lashing out on each other. They could have been the most popular kids, the jocks, heck your teachers, and when you stop giving them your company or attention they’ll revert back to being emotionally unstable children. Has no one ever wondered *why* it’s usually the slightly less attractive best friend that makes the best listener? It’s because we can offer them that. Now imagine where a bunch of “ugly” people congregate for company, there’s so many things we could do: talk, find a corner to hide or just appreciate that there’s no one “good-looking” blocking the natural sunlight. I honestly don’t know where I lost track at, all I know is that, without “ugly” in this world, nothing “beautiful” would be worth it’s salt today. So be proud, and remember, that your presence could literally make or break someone.

My brother has cerebral palsy and is in a wheelchair. Almost daily he goes out for a walk and always ends up at Tim Horton’s. He thought the cashier was pretty but him being awkward-only with girls- tripped over his words when ordering. A few days later he goes back and asks her if she is on fb and if she wants to be friends...she says no and tells the manager that my brother is harassing her. The manager knew my brother (because of his daily routine) and didn’t exactly believe the cashier but had to speak to my brother to cover his own backside. She was eventually fired and my brother has never approached a girl again. This happened over 6 years ago. This video hurt my heart. I think people just say it to make ugly people complacent rather than actually acknowledge that they have a series of legitimate disadvantages socially. Because to be honest, people have told me this a couple times in life. i have a couple of deformities that i try to hide and my appearance isn’t conventionally attractive, especially in my country. But *each* time I heard it, it’s always felt like they were just saying “ well, you’re stuck with what you’ve got, so you should just deal with whatever difficulties and unfair treatment stem from that instead of bothering me with it”

•Hunny• I agree with both. When I was in high school I had a crush on a guy considered unattractive to most ppl but I liked how he was smart and sensitive but also kind of bold-he was in personality similar to me because I was sensitive but he was my opposite in being bold. I really liked the idea of how we balanced out personality wise. But I’m kind of ugly myself so I don’t know if that makes a difference, to me he was physically attractive in some ways (he breakdanced once which was fun and he didn’t make a big deal of being overweight). But being not pretty myself I know that it’s true that life is more difficult when you’re ugly and agree with everyone on that. I was afraid of confessing to that guy partly because I thought he might not like my appearance. (Mainly because I didn’t have guts, was ridiculously shy.). I was kind of a coward, and always waited for him to ask me out but he never did. And that’s how that story ended. I can say though that Hunny you’re not the only one who likes ppl based on interest/personality. I just wonder if guys can also like girls based on that too-so far I still question if a guy can like a girl that isn’t pretty. But yeah, it’s not easy being ugly.

Your experience was SUPER similar to how I grew up and what I experienced. Internalizing the mean comments kept me from thinking anyone could even be attracted to me pretty much until I was about 22 years old. So much wasted time, and for what? In retrospect, some of those kids probably don’t even mean what they say, they just want to fit in, so they tease alongside other kids. And the ones who do mean it, they’re assholes who will likely grow up to not do much with their lives anyways. Anyways, know that you are beautiful!!! You know, I'm not a stellar-looking guy. Hell, I'd say under average, even, but the one thing I've never seemed to have an issue with is integrating myself into a group. At least, not since I got out of high school. Maybe it's a skill I've acquired, such as reading body language, getting a feel for personalities, or it's just enough confidence to show what kind of person I am from the get-go, but there is certainly something there that one can learn to do to overcome the aesthetics. At least, to a pretty good degree. P.S. Nailing someone in their humor bone doesn't hurt, either. Making someone laugh is a great way to break ice.

We had the same experience but I'm a girl. I remember it was in highschool. All of us had to participate in a dance, there were also too many girl and boys at that time. The teacher allow us to choose partners by ourselves. I remember like there we're also 4 girls who got left out, me included. The teachers told the boys that if someone would like to have a double partner means that they'll have to partcipate again just to dance to those who doesn't have any partner yet. No one answer. The teacher then instructed us to ask one of them to be our partner in their free time then I remember it was during our breaktime, I ask this one guy if he would like to be my partner because it was breaktime he was obviously with his friends, he's friends giggle and look at each other and they were tapping him on his shoulder, one of them was even raising his eyebrow. They look like they were joking and then one guy whisper to him "you have to deal with it". Eventhough I clearly heard that I still wasn't taken aback, I just stand their and politely smile because I'm also shy. During our dance he had to hold me by the waist and he look so uncomfortable doing that, it felt like he's not touching me, he's just placing his hands but he's not completely like holding me, it's like his hand was floating and all that touching my waist is his palm only and his finger wasn't like bended and holding me (if you get me), he's also not looking at me, his diverting his eyes unto somewhere and I also felt like his friends was watching laughing at him. After that I thank him but then I got home and think about that and got really hurt to the point that it keeps me up that night. I still think he's nice because he did keep that up with me eventhough his friends was teasing him but seriously after that I felt like I never want to dance with a guy again because I think I'll only make them uncomfortable. I also think to myself after that happened, "am I that ugly?". Yeah sorry for this long text.

Being autistic l can completely forget about time and don't care much about things like haircuts and shaving so l can look quite shabby and unappealing at times, however when l scrub up and make an effort to look good, l often get comments from girls I'm with about how often they catch other girls staring at me. How l look does make a clear difference in how both women and men treat me, but it's purely a matter of presentation, not weight or underlying looks. I know l do it to others as well, l deliberately try not to and for the most parts l adjust for my personal bias, but l do think it's built into us instinctively. Indeed a lot of things are instinctively built into human behaviour, like a 6 month old baby tends to be more responsive to a taller person vs a shorter person, not learnt behaviour, just built in and recognising those in built biases(or counter biases, because we identify with a certain group) is our only chance to treat others fairly.

There is a limit tho. I was harassed by a douchebag with good looks who thought he could do everything, have every girl and is irresistible and yeah he is pretty but his personality was awful, he was borderline racist sometimes, said sexist jokes all the time and not you are not funny and did not understand why I don’t want to be with him, his flirting is too much, you are not my type.. So yeah at one point there is a limit. I prefer a less pretty guy than a god with a shit personality and I am sure I am not the only one to think like this. Also, for the girls who date those guys, they either realize how bad they are or are really insecure and have lot self/esteem which I have empathy for them and I wish they will love themselves more. Same with guys staying with attractive girls with shit personality. To be happy you need to realize that looks is not all that matter in the other person. And harassment is real and is not just about looks. People who harassed are blind to see they make the other one uncomfortable and that they don’t want this. Maybe a pretty person will most likely not make the other one uncomfortable but it can I assure you.

I’m telling you not only was the man loud in volume the guy he talked a lot. Girls at school were fascinated with him and honestly he was a hit with the ladies. He flirted with me a few times but I wasn’t putting up with it. He became somewhat of a friend to me later in the school year though, he’s not a bad guy. There was another guy at my school not so attractive and not really athletic. Had the same type a personality of the attractive guy. He tried being playful and flirt with a few girls once and they all shut him down pretty harshly. I felt pretty bad for him but he didn’t take it personally thankfully. So yeah.

For anyone who's ever gotten friendzoned on ugliness, I can raise you one. So, when I was in my early years in high school, I asked this one girl in my class if she wanted to go out. Very simple, very polite, approached her by her locker in the middle of a crowded hallway inbetween classes so nothing would seem creepy about it. Now, back then, I wasn't the hottest looking guy around (nowadays I fancy myself a pure average, but I'm much better than I was). I had short greasy hair, and I was still in my braces phase, and to top that off I was a very socially awkward person (autism and ADHD). So, anyway, I ask the girl out, and she gives me a lukewarm can't-this-weekend-but-maybe-sometime-next-week-or-something rejection. She leaves, and I'm thinking, okay, well at least it wasn't a hard no. Come back to school the next day, and I get called to the principal's office. Apparently, the girl reported me for talking to her, and said I was "harrassing" her. The principal didn't do anything because they could easily see this was all bs, so they just let me go. I never spoke to that girl again. But since that was my first ever attempt at asking a girl out, it put me off of ever trying again, so to this day I haven't ever had a girlfriend. It's bad enough to get rejected, but when you already have a social dysfunction, and THAT'S what happens on your first try, it dashes your self-esteem to pieces. I have a decent amount of confidence for social interaction nowadays, but I could never bring myself to try again at dating. It just never seemed worth it after that.

A false assumption can easily be debunked by proving otherwise through the passage of time though, usually by getting to know them and realising you were wrong about them initially. Because people want to get to know good looking people more, they can easily find out they were wrong about them, so for attractive people, this serves as nothing more than a minor inconvenience at best really. They still have a chance to prove otherwise. As soon as someone has a false assumption about you as an ugly person though, you’re extremely unlikely to change their mind, you’ll have next to no chance to prove the contrary. The inner beauty cracked me up! It’s kind of like saying “winning doesn’t matter” when you’re the winner.

Or "money doesn't matter" when you're saying it from one of your private yachts.

Winning doesn’t matter, but trophies do!

The fact that this is all true makes me sad, knowing life is so unfair. But I don't think we should be mad at pretty people, but more the people who treat them better. I do wish pretty people would realize they have it easy tho🤷

Yeah, if they would just admit or acknowledge this truth, people would respect them more...

yeah but the only way we could get “attractive” ppl to acknowledge pretty privilege is if we magically transformed into a meritocratic society where ppl are rewarded solely for what they know and can do to benefit society. Otherwise, we just have to accept that EVRYONE’s experience is truly subjective. A white person will never know what it’s like to black person-does it make them inherently a horrible person? No, they literally cannot speak to an experience they’ve never had, rather all they can do is take someone’s word for it. (the race thing as an example btw.) But if we want things to change, I think we need to A. Stop rewarding pretty ppl for being mediocre B. Acknowledge that a part of us instinctually responds nicer and faster to ppl we find attractive. It’s almost biological response...
