People visit Mokpo Port to commemorate 5th anniversary of Sewol-ho ferry disaster

One of the two Sewol-ho ferry disaster memorial sites that the current administration has promised to keep is the now-upright Sewol-ho Ferry in Mokpo, not far from the location of the sinking.
And our Won Jung-hwan is at the site to tell us why thousands of people still come out to remember the victims of the tragedy.
So Jung-hwan, first of all, what's the atmosphere there right now?
Hi Ji-yoon, as you can see behind me,… there is a clear view of the 6-thousand-8-hundred-ton Sewol-ho ferry, which sank in the waters off Jindo five years ago today.
Yes, today marks the 5th anniversary of the Sewol-ho ferry disaster.
And to commemorate the tragedy,… people have come to pay their respects at the Mokpo New Port.
As the yellow ribbons flutter near the port, people visit the area and sigh as they look out at the ship's hull.
There's been a lot of tears and heartbreak as the visitors recall the tragedy,… and I got a chance to hear from some of the people who are here for the victims who died five years ago.
As a parent who has children, it is just painful to think how much pain those kids had to suffer. It is a pain that cannot be erased. And that is why I come here to remember the tragedy.
I have a 7-year old child,… and I feel so sad when I think of those kids inside the ferry 5 years ago. Those parents would have raised their kids with such efforts as I raise my child now.
Thanks Jung-hwan. We remember that the ferry was brought to the port on a recovery ship some two years ago. Since then, the remains of four of the nine unrecovered passengers were found over the course of the three subsequent searches. And the search is now finished right?
Yes, the search of the ferry is now finished,… but the pain for the families and friends of those victims will continue for much longer than we can possibly imagine.
We can see a banner with photographs of the five undiscovered victims.
And as well as that,… many still feel core questions surrounding the disaster remain unanswered: What caused the sinking and why the government didn't initiate the rescue mission immediately?
Let us hear the frustrations of those victims.
"Every time I come here I think why the government didn't try to save them. They had enough time to save them but why."
"Now the government's role is to reveal the truth. Five years have passed, and the government needs to help the victims to get over their traumas."
But some say the collective mourning and reflection on the disaster has changed Korean society.
The recent successful tackling of the wildfire in Goseong and Sokcho is representative of such changes.
Indeed, some could say the Sewol-ho ferry sinking has left a legacy,… that citizens' lives and safety should come above anything else.

On April 16,2014, on my bffs bd, she lost her older sister, dad, and brother. Her sister was one of the missing people to this day and the rest, she saw their bodies. Her mother moved with her when she was 10 to forget all that happened but r still in shock. I strive to support her everyday. She said the day before her sister left for the trip, she had a big fight with her over something and now she regrets it soo much. The night before that, it was her brother’s bd and they celebrated his 15th or 16th(I think bd). That day she asked him what he wanted, and he told her that the biggest gift she can give him, is her smile. Her, being one of my best friends, I cry in agony for her as she tells me everything.😣

I can feel you, my heart is aching very much. I am not a Korean, I live far away from Korea, and neither am I having any Korean or East Asian friends but still since the day I have came to know about this, I can't get over the trauma...and you are seeing your bff coping with that everyday, I can feel how much painfull that is (as even if I see my bff not smiling for a second, I start getting worried about her). Even though I know this is maybe fantasizing/childish/just stupid but still everyday my heart says that "keep hope, keep waiting, someday they'll come back and they'll say mom, dad I'm home" and my heart also says "there will be a time machine in future, just go back in time/be a time traveler and warn all of them not to go on that trip" I know none of that makes any sense, but still it is my heart who's telling me. And also, if those things never come true just remember that the Angels went to where they belonged, they're in heaven, they're in paradise now, away from all this selfish and cruel world, they are happy there and living a way better life there.

Why didnt the government just do the exact same way of rising the ferry when it was in the middle of sinking 5 years ago... they literally just let the ferry sink and just waited for survivors to call for their assistance.. they drilled more than 100 holes to raise it from water, I don't really understand why, seems unnecessary, and usually salvaging is not done this way. When the ship was sinking they had multiple rescue options, government didn't use any of the options ...

It's makes me angry and sad at the same time, when I think about the time the ferry was sinking, all they were focusing on was to get the live footage of the ferry from the inside. One of the survivors was interviewed and she said they weren't rescued, they had to rescue themselves. It's ridiculous, how they were finding the "dead bodies" of the victims, once the ferry sank while they could save so many innocent lives if they took appropriate action when the ferry started to sink.... I pray for their souls to rest in peace🙏🏻🙏🏻

What i cant understand why those 300 didnt went up when ferry was sinking even if the one who was in charge that told them to stay in their cabines .. but some of the students went up why the other didnt went up when the ship was sinking how they obey to order until their death ... Why the goverment didnt accept the help form japan and US. Something else i watched in another video .. an old man said that he didnt hear anything about this tregedy until the next day .. how this could happen? More than 300 lives was sinking in the water and he didnt hear anything until the next day? What happened to sewol was really weird .. its a murder .. if they let the passengers went up! RIP THOSE INNOCENT LIVES .For these 2 days i was watching a lot of videos about this tragedy ... And my heart really hurt me a lot i cant stop crying 😭😭😭

For students/kids, it's hard to disobey. It's likely that the students did wanted to go up to the ferry, but when they tried to go or ask, the teacher/adults said no and told them wait for help (because of captain's orders). Like most situations, the student is pressured to obey, especially if everyone else does too. Sorry for poor explanation. I mean to say that what the kids did is understandable.

I agree 1st of all Korean kids always obet the parents and elderly people, but they was kid's and probably when they already realised that they don't get help was already 2 late. Kid's without any kind of sailing knowledge expecially under age 12 so so sad. It was time to rescue them more then 12h sadly the rescue team failed Coast guards expecially! Saying in radio chatting that everyone is saved and evacuated??? Holly shit wasn't clear communication at all. If they was given the chances to the civilian divers... 12 hours is a lot of time minimum 80 souls will be saved in that interval time... I can't believe they just let them die without not even a chance to survive.

There were so so so so many evidences and happenings that were really fishy (I have looooong list of that, so I'm not going to list that here), there were lots of things that helped many people to connect the dots and all indicates towards the same thing...*it was a planned murder* or there are no explanations behind many of the things that happened. One ex: over radio they said "they all jumped into the sea, when the ship tilted" yet no body was seen flooding or struggling in that calm sea, and even when they said that, the announcement was continuing that "stay put" (the words that took away so many lives), so isn't it contradicting, that one side they are saying they all jumped into the water and yet they were continuing their announcement...why? (If they knew that they all jumped into the sea, then who were they talking to? And if they knew that there were students stuck inside then why did they say "all jumped", they should have said "we're looking into it") so it's pretty clear that they weren't eager to put any effort, and that was the disgustingly calmest interrogation I've ever heard during a DISASTER, and they were just talking about "putting on a show and the ship with the camera", also even when the ship was tilting, the captain and crew were standing like dumbasses and a 4th grade student informed that it was tilting. ...ridiculous and suspicious, it really makes me think it was intentional, it was planned. (I don't know if that's true but some says it was performed because of a cult, so that could be the case)

In korea they have to obey order no matter what. They trusted the captain and stayed inside the room. The captain said it was more dangerous to move and it was to stabilize the ferry. If all of the over 400 people were running on the ship the ship would have sunken faster. And they did try to lift the ferry up but it was causing it to sink faster.
