Maybe not the same but I've purchased two books by my favorite author from used book stores -- paid $2 for one and 50 cents for the other -- and opened them to discover they were autographed by the author. Now I have three signed books by my favorite author (including the one he signed for me at a meet-and-great haha).
@rainbowpuppet773 жыл бұрын
that's amazing! now I'm wondering why someone would donate the books they took the time to get autographed!
@juliannickermann94923 жыл бұрын
@@rainbowpuppet77 Well one explanation is if people die, relatives or the people in charge get rid of some of their belongings, things in good condition not rarely get donated. Also if those were gifts and the person didn't wanted them anymore, we never know if the previous owner got them signed or was given them like that.
@faithlps86423 жыл бұрын
I have two different autographed books I got from the thrift store for $2. One is a book my grandma had let me borrow years ago and I didn’t realize it was signed until I got home and looked to read it again. The second is one from my favorite author when I need a good cry. Funny thing is they’re both in my depressing Christmas section of my bookcase.

This makes me sad but also happy! Always remember that many places will GLADLY take donations, don’t just throw things away. And I’m not talking about Goodwill or thrift stores. Have any old towels, sheets or pillow cases? Bring them to an animal shelter. They DESPERATELY need those! Have some old children’s toys? Bring them to a local daycare center. They are usually very grateful to have them.

Excellent advice. Also old newspapers given to animal shelters, carpet pieces, old and/or unwanted dog toys, leads, collars an all be used by shelters.

I work at a daycare as a bus driver, transporting school kids to/from the daycare, so I know another thing that you can donate to most daycares, head start programs, & public schools is used children's clothes, shoes & coats/gloves, etc in fair condition & extra unopened pullups or new underwear. They try to keep a certain amount of extra clothing on hand in case a child has an accident & the parents haven't sent more spare clothes yet. Also, they mentally note which kids are in very low income families & will quietly on the side ask those parents if they would like to look through their excess spare clothes to see if there is anything their kids can use. So if you want to know your kids' decent hand-me-downs are being given to actual families in need for free & you don't already have another charity lined up to take them, ask your kids' teachers if their school could use some clothes donations at the moment. Some schools even send out public announcements about coat drives in the fall as a way to pass on coats, hats & gloves to kids in need. Also books in addition to toys!! Daycares & schools usually can take children's books you want to pass on & give them to kids to take home. Since many low income families are having to prioritize what little money they have, books are often overlooked as people tend to think of them as not necessary unless you mean textbooks. However encouraging kids to read more with fun books is actually just as important! 🙂

I always donated old clothes that were still good to a sort of shop I guess that gives free clothes to people with less money. You could go twice a year one for summer and one for winter and pick anything you want. I don't know if it has a name in English or even if you have a thing like that. Oh and when it's not giving clothes away they sell them for really cheap and then use that money to buy things like underwear so that people can get free underwear.

4 years ago, when I took some rubble to the landfill, there was a gardener´s waste pile from which I rescued 11 David Austen rose bushes just ripped out of their pots to separate them from the plastic - they were unsellable because not in bloom... some still had price tags tied to the stems: 30-40 Euros each. Two died, but the remaining nine are such a delight in my garden...

My best find was back in the late 90s when the internet was new and used bookstores were still a thing. Found an original copy of the very first Bards Tale ever made, complete with all maps and instructions in perfect condition for $3. After making copies of all the 3.5" floppies (easy to do back then) and maps, I sold the original for $50 on ebay...back when it was actually a useful site for the individual seller and didn't charge any fees.

I have this old mirror in my bedroom that my mom saved from being thrown into the trash at the thrift store she worked at at the time. The paint was peeling off at the back (the front was still fine) and it wouldn't sell (it had been there for years). My mom thought I might like it so she took it home with her. It's been standing in my room for several years now and I think it looks awesome on my dresser with some Christmas lights hanging around it

The relentless pursuit of renovating ourselves and having the latest and trendiest stuff has driven us to throw away things that are in perfect condition and still work. Dumpsters are full of these authentic gems that end up becoming someone else’s prized possession. As the saying goes, “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” Reddit users have shared the objects that they’ve rescued from dumpsters, and we were so impressed that we’ve decided to show you pictures of some of the most incredible finds. What’s the most amazing or strangest thing you’ve found in a dumpster? Have you ever restored anything you found lying on the street?

"It's crazy what people throw away." People tell me "It's too much work to donate stuff." A neighbor had an entire set of Corel dinnerware in his trash can. It's mine now. I see so many nice pieces of furniture in the trash that I want to cry., I know a guy who cuts grass for a living. He picks up any lawnmower that he sees in the trash. Usually all they need is an oil change, new plug, and a new blade. He uses them until they die and he moves on to the next one. He told that he hasn't had to pay for a mower in over twenty years.

Depending on where the students come from they may not have a choice. As an exchange student in Japan, the dorm rooms we had to use were empty of most furniture aside from a desk, bed, lamp, stove and fridge. So you had to buy everything you needed like cutlery dishes etc. But you were also not allowed to leave anything inside the dorm rooms when you left. So while we could give some stuff to our advisors to keep for other upcoming students, space was limited. Sadly most stuff went into the trash. Really don't wanna know how much usable stuff is trashed each semester

Stopped in at a local thrift store and found a $3 clock that looked pretty nice, turns out to be worth anywhere between 80 and 150 dollars. I ended up gifting it to my brother at his wedding, the clock was beautiful. Another time at a different thrift store, found another clock much like the first, spent $5, worth $45. At the same thrift store, I found a whole shelf full of antique books, snapped them all up costing me about $35, did a bunch a research on them and the grand total has their worth at about 200 to 300 dollars last I checked. My dad also bought some antique dishes there once, it was several boxes worth. While he did end up spending $200 on the full thing, we are talking about dishes that were normally going for $40 a piece on the cheap side and I think he got more the 60 pieces in that one go. People just give/throw away the most ridiculously valuable stuff some times. P.S. Both the clocks were crystal, so it's not like they weren't pretty, and a quick look at the details told you this thing probably ain't just a hunk of glass. Just a quick search on the internet and they were obviously worth something. I've started keeping my eyes peeled. Oh, I also found a full set of one of my favorite authors books, and one of them was autographed ^o^

If you are dumpster diving, please be careful. It can be unsafe if there are sharp objects in them. Also, it is very important that you check into the laws wherever you are diving. In some jurisdictions, it is illegal and you could be arrested even though you're taking their "trash."

And sometimes worse, people will "poison" some food that's been thrown out in an attempt to keep animals away from dumpsters. Horrible and inhumane! Do not take anything that has any punctures or openings at all. Protect yourself and protect any strays that might need to survive. Beware of swollen cans. Dented ones are suspicious but the ones that are dented and swollen mean you shouldn't take them. The contents inside have likely been contaminated somehow. Please stay safe when you go out, everyone. We uh... we do want to see pictures of your sweet, sweet finds.
@can_hauler2 жыл бұрын
Also to add, if you live in a place with both a drug problem and homeless problem, beware of needles. Esp if there is a homeless tent city nearby. Best case, no needles, worst case, you find the one sharp that is full of blood and God only knows what diseases and drugs. You also puncture the milk jug full of unknown yellowish liquid and get "brown stuff" all over you.

I have a cutlery set just like the one shown. From my wife's grandmother. We were told never to put them in a dishwasher. Bone handles will come loose. It would be interesting if you had suggested an approximate value.
@peterkoller37613 жыл бұрын
bone handles will not just coem lose (they used to be glued on with rosin, just like the silver handles on old cuttlery, and rosin melts at dish washer temperatures) but they will also crack from the heat and moisture, and lose all their beautiful patina and go dull. unfortunately, these things have gone out of fashion completely, even as wedding gift which they usually were in those days, so the prices they fetch don´t represent the value of the craftmanship thats been put into them at all.

It's a pity what people throw away. If you have a domestic/sexual violence shelter in your area, they always need lightly used sheets, towels, blankets/quilts. They will also take unused (and unopened if possible) feminine hygiene products, shampoo, soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste.... The shelter I work at prefers only new clothing and shoe items (it's a nice treat for men and women who have survived trauma and maybe having been forced to abandon everything or have their things destroyed by their abuser) to get brand-new pjs, clothes, socks, shoes, underwear. We always need new kids stuff (clothing mostly, shoes too), and diapers, pull ups, wipes.... I'm happy people find great things in the trash, but there are some places that are in desperate need daily, so try donating instead! This goes for homeless shelters as well!

@tamarasmith90603 жыл бұрын
I worked in a grocery store a long time ago, & yes once it's past the date they are legally required to trash food items. They scan in the upc codes, fill out paperwork saying the items expired without selling, & mark the purchase cost as a loss. They can't be given to a shelter or anything because that would make the store legally liable if someone claimed they got sick from them. But what our managers did was do the paperwork near the end of the day, put the refrigerated items in the garbage but then "get busy with more urgent work" & leave the non-refrigerated items in a spot on an empty register for the bagboys (now just called stockers cause 1. sexual discrimination & 2. they actually spend more time stocking than helping the cashiers bag) to take to the dumpster as they did nightly trash. Then they'd quietly say to 1 of the cashiers or bagboys "If it disappears before reaching the trash then I know nothing about that!" Then the workers on duty would divide it up after all the customers were gone.

Other than the kitten and everything curbside- we aren’t supposed to take from store dumpsters. A store’s waste isn’t for anyone to steal. Stealing from a store is not how you convince them they waste too much- you don’t spend money there period. THAT’S how you show what you care about. Maybe my idealistic personality just doesn’t understand stealing even if everyone else is doing it. Stimulate the economy, don’t profit off of stolen goods. Save more kittens.
