Want to hear something worse? My co-worker used to work for a New York State agency a few decades back. They were replacing all their old computers and all the old computers were to be tossed out. They were old models but still usable, so the people in the office wanted to take the computers home for their kids, but taking trash home would require the office to fill out paperwork. Instead of filling out paperwork, it was easier to just rent a dumpster and toss all the computers in there. After getting literally tossed into the dumpster, most weren't salvageable anymore.

Not that easy giving things away. I am a female senior and I phoned both a charity and a second hand appliance store to see if they would like a fully functioning washer and dryer. I was renovating and I needed them gone. For free. One wanted to charge ME $200 to pick them up, and another would pick them up if I disconnected them, got them into the elevator and set them out on the curb so they could just toss them in the truck as they drove by. Fortunately me coworkers brother needed some so I happily let him have them for free providing he came and got them which he did. They lasted him several years.

Sometimes it's just silly stuff like if it is outside the dumpster, it's up for grabs, but if it's inside the dumpster, it's stealing. The old treasures will be the belongings of someone who has passed and not valued by the people going through their treasures, might be past their prime also but would be valued by the right someone else.

In the US, there are regulations about food. If it's considered "unsellable" then it cannot be donated either. Pre-packaged items past the "sell by" date are usually still fine but must be thrown away. Same goes for foods at places like a bakery or restaurant, or even a caterer: left-over items must be tossed and cannot be donated. It's considered a health risk. The thinking is "better to toss it than to risk making someone ill with a food-borne disease".

I know of people who pulled bags of water with living fish inside the dumpster behind pet smart. Like how do you throw away a living creature, like the kittens? Also there are people who will drive around nice neighborhoods in on trash night just to see if they get lucky. Usually the dumpsters are right behind the stores. Actually, there is a protocol for that. Food pantries and most shelters have an 'extended expiration date' list that they use, because unopened, shelf-stable foods can be good and used/given away for months and even years after the 'expiration' date. Even some refrigerator things are good for months and months more if they're frozen before the marked date. The only thing we really don't mess around with is baby food - nobody generally will give away/allow baby food that has 'expired' (though it's really fine).
