My mom donated this dress when I was 6 because I outgrew it. 8 went back to that thrift store 20 years later and saw it i knew it was mine because it had my name on it.

At my local thrift shop, I found and purchased a framed engraving of an orange lily for no other reason than I liked it. I knew it was old, so when I got home, out of curiosity I typed in the botanical name underneath. I discovered it was a page from Johann Wilhelm Weinmann's 'Phytanthoza Iconographia' published between 1737 and 1745. All for $3.99. Asphodelus lileaceus flore luteo, No. 186, with the engraver's initials. It's one of my treasures, but not for its monetary value; I simply like it and am pleased to enjoy it for this time.

8:01 - is a wedding challis. The bride and groom both drink from it at the same time. One from the cup above her head and the cup that is her skirt. If the couple can drink from it, at the same time, one from each cup, without spilling a drop, their marriage will last. If not, the marriage will not work. It’s a hundred year old tradition (I was told) and saw lots of them in Germany. Once it’s upside down and filled with your liquid of choice, it’s not hard to figure out.

Mutong Niu - that is part of the ritual. The couple that can work together to figure it out stays together. Also, there are instructions that come with it. You just can’t read them during the toast.

This is amazing, and thank you for all the great info on it! Maybe its a tradition that should spread? 🤔 🙂 I'd love to see one in person... without instructions, cus I'd sit there trying to figure out how to fill it, then have my hubs and I drink from it at the same time without spilling it. (I enjoy figuring stuff out, but if there's instructions... I default to them.) I think I have the principle of how to do it in my head, but being able to physically hold/try one would help prove me wrong.. or right. Lol

Before I retired, most of my neckties came from church thrift shops - $2 for silk ties! My local Goodwill could be replaced by a very large dumpster though. And they're so picky about what they will accept. If the Van Gogh was dusty, they wouldn't take it.

i'm sad to say that our GoodWill stores here sift through all of the cool stuff and take it to a store downtown so they can hugely jack up the prices in an overpriced boutique...up until then though, I had had lots of fun going there and bought lots of cool treasures! I miss finding something quirky (not necessarily valuable moneywise) but these things happen i guess.
@haroldwilkes6608
@haroldwilkes6608 3 жыл бұрын
Agreed. I hated to take stuff there only to see an employee taking home bags full for the flea market sale the following weekend. Goodwill's mission is to "work to enhance people’s dignity and quality of life by strengthening their communities, eliminating their barriers to opportunity, and helping them reach their full potential through learning and the power of work." Or it used to be - now it's "let's make as much money as we can before the suckers wise up".

I know someone who worked for Goodwill for four years. All of the 'goodwill' they have is nothing but smoke and mirrors. They care nothing for the employees. And, yes, it is true that they started taking out the good stuff to sell online and what is left in the store is nothing remarkable and overpriced.

I worked in a charity shop over here in the UK .It broke my heart what went in the skip ! The manageress was dreadful .She used to sort out all the decent pairs of jeans and just put 50p in the charity box on the counter for a whole bag full instead of paying properly for them. I reported her but had to leave as I just couldn't work there anymore .

I noticed that some thrift stores have valuable items like jewelry and coins behind the counter, but Goodwill never does. Turns out they sell that stuff online. I found some small items online and bought them. I paid a "handling fee" plus over $12.50 in shipping. After a few weeks, I contacted Goodwill to say the items had not been delivered. They didn't put enough postage on the package and it was in the post office for $6.50 due. I paid and asked them to reimburse me. They didn't. First and last time ordering Goodwill online.

Some real treasures there. I am in Australia with a population of only 26 million, so our thrift stores don't have a large pool of donations. I would gladly take home half of the items in this vid. Also our thrift stores (we call them opportunity shops btw) have started to turn themselves into semi retail stores. I used to enjoy rummaging around in bins etc. Sadly they are no more. All the valuable items never make it to the shelves. Now and then I find something that the managers have not recognised for value, but not often anymore.
@k.s.k.7721

That's a shame. I don't know the laws regarding charitable shops in Australia, but in the US it's not uncommon for specific charities (diabetes, cancer, pets) to open and run a non-profit store to provide funds. I happen to live close to 6 that I can walk to, and 3 in my area are for pet charities - to find homes, and one just for the pets of low-income or homeless folks locally. My town has about 9 thousand people and they support all these small, local thrift stores. I know they have to set up as a non-profit, and file paperwork - they also rely on donations and volunteers to work the store, but the quality and quantity of items sold is amazing. Prices are anywhere from cheap to half of retail, depending on the shop. It might be worth looking into your local laws, and see if a non-profit store could be started, and run to assist a charity of your choice.
