The video description is spot on. I grew up with Dragon Ball Z and it definitely has valid criticisms and is by no means perfect, but it's always going to be my all-time favourite. I love dragon ball z because when I was getting bullied at school I watched it for hope. I remember seeing Goku vs Perfect Cell and saying I want to be able to defend myself. Which I did because Goku inspired me to do martial arts. I related to Vegeta more because as a kid I felt that the world was against me and I couldn't get what I want which is the same as him. Vegeta wants to be number 1 but can't. A lot of people are emotionally connected to their favorite anime, so it's more than just nostalgia.

Yo goku was a like a role model for me when I was comin' up. Somedays were so damn bad, I wished Goku was my dad. You can't take away Dragon Ball emotional connection from those of us who grew up with the thing. Sure it may not be the "best anime" in the production sense of it. But on a spiritual and individual level, that shit was hella lit. I grew up a better man, because of the values I learned from Dragon Ball. 1. Always take care of your loved ones if you can. 2. Try to be good, never fail to be kind. 3. Take care of your own body, as it is your temple.

I used to wait a week to watch a 30 minute episode of DBZ before soccer practice. I remember watching en episode during the Frieza vs Goku fight on Namek. There were 15 minutes of commercials, 10 minutes of Goku yelling and powering up and maybe 5 minutes of dialogue and fighting. Still nothing beats the excitement of waiting for that next Saturday 😂

Current anime with OP characters skip all the training and themes for the idea of power fantasies. then everyone downplayed DB to that level as well.

Pacing problems is also a problem ingrained in shounen, even shows that people consider peak fiction like one piece and hxh have pacing problems. Let’s also not forget that for dragon balls case, the pacing problem doesn’t really exist since even the filler is enjoyable for most people. Pikkon and turles are still super people characters in dragon ball and broly and gogeta were so popular that they eventually became canon, you don’t get that in most shounen.

It may be nostalgia, but DBZ is classic/legendary, it was the foundation for so many animes, so of course it has flaws - it was one of the first and all the new animes can learn from it and be better (in fact the new animes should be better, they had all these years to improve writing, plot development, pacing etc). It will always be the best to me. DBZ is probably the biggest reason I even like anime today, and it still entertains me, which most shows from my childhood don't. I've seen so many good anime from other genres now, but DBZ just hits different.

DB is heavily inspired by "A Journey to the West" which has the common "traveler travels with other travelers and sometimes gets into conflict" cliche. Even the screaming could be a reference to Jojo. DB (Not Z or SUper) manga started around the same time as Jojo Phantom Blood Manga, and that had a lot of screaming. It's safe to say that was what inspired the screaming during fighting thing in anime. Or maybe the Super Sentai Franchise (which I believe started in the 60s) "Main Character wanting to be..." was also very common.

It has lots of unpredictable events:- 1)Goku being an alien(saiyan) 2) mysterious discovery of another time machine identical to trunks's/ introduction of cell(some mysterious being emerged from trunks's own time machine and emerged from cacoon who's sucking people out of life 3) learning that db's were made by some alien race which all this time we thought to originate from earth 4)ssj3 5)bulma having a sister 6) bulma knowing Jaco from childhood 7) Vegeta self sacrifice 8) in dbs, most theories about ending of t.o.p, ending of Goku black arc all were wrong In my head I can still remember atleast 10 more casual moments which were unexpected plot twists, ofc there are parts that are predictable, but i think the unpredictable part are too unpredictable and amazing so it surpasses the predictable parts

It's way less pervasive than the "dbz is the best anime" argument though. A lot of people will admit to enjoying Redo of Healer, but very very few will unironically call it the best.
