But the ending didn't make any sense, it's implied the timeline changed, but the event(Jason's assault/arrest) was the driving force, Pepper in the changed timeline explained in the end that event happened in it's entirety, so Lynn shouldn't have married Jason because she should've met the MC in the parking lot which Pepper confirmed he was in. It also wouldn't make sense he would remember Pepper since at the beginning he only saw her on FB because he was looking at Lynn's profile because she was his wife, something that wouldn't happen if the timeline changed. No offense to the author, I think he's pretty good, I'm just saying this particular story could use a few course corrections.

@@andrewashington1001 Reality shifted once - when Pepper didn't recognize Greg. It shifted again when she finally remembered him. What's to keep reality from continually shifting on Greg? There are at least four reality shifts in the story, none of them locked permanently into place. That's the narrator's purgatory.

Okay here goes: First off, nothing reality altering happens in this story besides Greg receiving a reality check. Greg establishes himself early on as someone who’s psyche is abnormal. He jumps between past and present, he reads into Pepper’s kindness towards him in high school, he obsesses over a woman he hasn’t seen in years despite having a wife and child of his own, etc. This in itself isn’t damning evidence of an unreliable narrator, but recall the newspaper article that Lynn shows him. In that article Jason kills his wife, himself and almost his daughter. This has NOT occurred yet, and may never. When Greg takes Pepper out on a date Jason shows up and abuses her in front of him. This is a woman whom he has obsessed over for a while and she obviously means a great deal to him. His inability to act is the beginning of the end for his mental state going forward, it is the driving force that leads to all the confusion surrounding the circumstances going forward. Up until this point the story is 100% true. After Greg fails to act and then leaves the restaurant he sees Pepper who now hates him for his cowardly act. Greg blames himself for this, not Jason. Guilt brought on by a traumatic event such as this can seriously screw someone up, as we later see happen to Greg. Lynn was with Jason through all of this, after she leaves Greg may or may not have actually spoken to her, due to all of this happening after a series of traumatic events. Regardless, Greg proceeds to comfort Lynn in a way that he failed to with Pepper. This is most likely his mind’s way of convincing himself that he is redeemable. As time passes (with Greg living in his fantasy world) Greg gets a Facebook notification from Pepper. This is the point where true reality starts to take control again. Greg meets Pepper after all those years but she does not recognize him. Why would she? We’ve already accepted that Greg is scarred from that event, therefore we can assume that Pepper is also effected. When young Greg tells Pepper that he is a good guy she believes him, but when she needed him most he fled. As a result, Pepper as suppressed the memory in an effort to heal. Greg asks her about Jason and she gets visibly uncomfortable. She is now confronting something that she has moved past by someone her mind has deliberately forgotten. From this point on Pepper is herself coming back to reality as her mind can no longer hide Greg’s identity from her. This is especially hard as he keeps returning to talk to her. Back on the home front, (or mind front as my theory suggests), Greg and Lynn’s relationship is deteriorating. This is because Lynn is actually Greg’s mind, his coping mechanism, and if he mentions the events of that night he will have to accept the reality of what he did. When Lynn becomes visibly upset it is Greg’s mind telling him to drop it in order to keep up his charade. The final cracks begin to develop in his pretend world when Greg mentions the fact that Lynn used to date Jason. Keep in mind we don’t know that Lynn actually had a relationship with Jason, they supposedly were only seem together that night. This could mean that Greg knows they are still together and the ending begins to make sense. She then proceeds to call him by Jason’s name, something that the real Lynn might do because she is married to Jason and associates him as her husband. In their conversation Lynn also explains her interest in Jason was due to his “confidence”. Of course Greg would accept that because he sees confidence as one of the greatest traits, and one that he lacked that night at the restaurant. When Greg receives the message from Pepper (real life now) he leaves to meet her. On his way out he sees a lump in the bed. Notice I didn’t say “Lynn in the bed”, this is because she was never there. By not seeing Lynn, Greg’s mind has finally stopped trying to convince him of his delusion. Greg meets Pepper and she has realized who he really is: the jerk that told her he would be there for her and lied. With this, Greg attempts to return to his fake life with Lynn and arrives at the real Lynn’s house. Real Lynn, as Greg has accurately guessed, is being abused just like Pepper was. This is why Greg makes up the part about fake Lynn showing him the newspaper article. Real Lynn and her daughter could very well meet that fate as evidenced by the black eye and verbal altercation. When he opens the door and sees all of the evidence pointing to his delusion, Greg panics and leaves. Now that he is forced to confront his demons, Greg begins to forget the details of his fake life with Lynn starting with his son’s name and then his reason for driving to real Lynn’s home. Ultimately this is a story of a man who failed to act and convinced himself that he saved someone else from the same fate through trauma induced delusions. If you managed to read this all the way through give yourself a pat on the back and hopefully I helped clear up this convoluted plot!

But Pepper saw that Greg had wedding ring on though, so it couldn't be in his imagination. And you kinda lost me when you said Lynn might have stayed with Jason after she saw his violence and arrest. Timeline switch is more in line with the story.

nice theory but i dont really think a "reality" theory makes much sense since we don't tend to forget like that.. denial and trauma can lock memories but as far as i know it kinda doesn't work like that, but hey its a story so maybe its posible...
@MiddayLady4 жыл бұрын
An honestly good explanation, I liked it a lot, but I still think it was just a timeline change and magical realism: he never appreciated what he had and kept up with 'what ifs' and in the end, it came true bc he kpet willing it into reality: his reality changed to a one in which he never married Lynn, instead the Abusive Ex did because he kept - lowkey - WISHING for this to happen because he wanted his Pepper so much. And he ends up without Pepper and without his wife, a tragic end that makes sense. Lynn mentioning Abusive Ex instead of him is just a way to show the tragic reality: they both married the 'second-best one' and always remembered their REAL love and attraction, which for the OP was Pepper and for his wife was AbusiveEx

Julia Smalley - Men and women do this. A lot. They could be in a perfect relationship, totally happy, and then they come across a Facebook profile of their ex, one or their first loves. The draw of the first love is powerful - it's not as much about the person as it is about how they felt about them, how they felt when they were with them, the hope of young love and youth. I think people think they can recapture some of that if they go after that person. Like they can be transported back into their youth, and be rid of their present day responsibilities, and find that feeling that you only have in youth, that by the time you realize how wonderful it is, it's already over. When people think they'll be able to tap into that, and it doesn't happen, they get desperate. Like they're entitled to that feeling, and it just doesn't make sense that someone would deny it from them. Nothing quite so powerful as reminiscing about love and youth, I guess.

Yea, but then the ending was shocking and saddening. So I really *pity* him. The whole plot of him being married and having a son with Lynn, then coming across his first love "Pepper" on internet, whom he stalks online to get together with, then Pepper remembers the coward he was when she got abused by Jason, she tells him off, then all those happenings make him realize how he should be thankful for the life he has, with his wife and son. *All that, only to come back to reality, that none of that was ever his actual life.* I think the only REAL things were: He knew Lynn, Greg Jason and Pepper, at some point in his life. All the events he mentions were his imaginations. When we dream or hallucinate, our brain mostly "casts" the people we've met at some point in our lives, as the "actors", in our fictional stories. He might be someone who has schizophrenia and also a lot of past trauma. Especially regarding his teenage days, has a lot of deep regrets how his life "should've, could've" been. Hence it leads the point, where his mind, fabricates such stories, to his pleasing. The whole story "I almost cheated on my wife, but then I remembered what a great family I've built" sounds so "full of life", to someone who has, no life. "Having a bit of relationship drama since the school days" is such a mundane or normie thing to most people. But there are so many others, who end up with the worst of misfortunes. Who don't even have a normal family life, leading to disrupted school life, corrupted emotional life, leading to not having good job opportunities, etc. A cycle of misfortunes. Hence even such *an average Joe lifestyle* is something he can only *dream about.* Which is why, the ending really saddens me...

Very well written, although I understand why the ending angered some people. For me, I loved it. I mean, it sucked for those who really have to have those neatly-tied perfect endings or if you're emotionally invested in him sorting things out with Lynn, but it's poetic. He spent all this time trying to "What if" his life, and when he finally decides "oh... that was dumb... i actually want my current life-" it's ONLY when it's become apparent to him that his personality never had a chance with Pepper in the first place - and THEN he gets pushed *into* that "What if" universe where he's still not with Pepper AND there is no Lynn for him to go home to.

What makes no sense is that in this new time line that he isn't with pepper but Lynn is still with Jason? The catalyst for Lynn leaving Jason and eventually ending up with Greg was the fight that Jason had with pepper, right? So it can only be surmised that the event never occurred, because Lynn didn't leave Jason, but instead stayed and had a kid with him. So shouldn't Greg still be with pepper?

It was beautifully written, but yes, the ending made zero sense. There needs to be a little more from the author to get people to guess at what's going on, or a little more detail at the end as to where he ends up. Is he driving back to the bar he owns with Pepper? Is he heading to his bachelor pad, full of newspaper clippings about Lynn or Pepper? Is he crazy or is it a time shift? If it's a time shift, it doesn't make any sense that Pepper rejected him for not standing up for her. Lynn would have never married Jason after he hit Pepper, so she wouldn't be married to him. Unless he didn't bring Pepper to that specific bar that night, in which case Lynn might not have found out how abusive he is and married him, but then he'd be with Pepper bc the fight where he didn't act wouldn't have happened. Or, he wouldn't be with Pepper because their date didn't go anywhere, but again, she wouldn't be angry with him about Jason. I thought the author was starting to go somewhere when Lynn called Greg Jason, but then it fizzled. Great groundwork for a story, but disappointing ending that never gets to that "OMG what a twist!" moment. Needs a lot of work.

Okay you guys but lynn called him by the guys name that she ended up with and he had to correct her that his name is greg and she goes "whatever" and goes to bed and he doesn't see her until he leaves pepper for the last time. Was lynn even in the bed? We don't know, she was under the covers, and he didn't mention his son either so..hmm.....

I gotta say Clancypasta, I got into creepypastas like 6 years ago when I started a new job. I would listen to them for hours while working to pass the time. It might sound sad but sometimes I couldn't wait to punch in and throw on some headphones, and work in my own little world. Anyway, back then I never thought I'd be able to name so many narrators of this genre. There's creepsmcpasta, mr nightmare, chilling tales, unit something lol, letsreadscarystories, there's SO many! I'll run out of room if I actually name them all. But within all of them I just want to pay my respects here because I dont get the chance to listen as much as I used to. That said, when I can listen it's like the last ones standing out of all the great narrators TO ME, that I enjoy listening too the most would be Dr. Creepen in -3rd- 2nd, and 1st would have to split between you, ClancyPasta and Natenator. You 2 have very different styles and I like them both way too much to put one over the other. So yeah! I dont know why I like creepypastas so much, but I just want to say thanks for all the efforts you put into the Creepypasta community. I dont know who else feels the same way or whatever but thanks man. You've sure helped me get through -some- MANY of my longest days.

Didn't necessarily care for the ending bc it left too much to the imagination when the rest of the story was so detailed. However, going with the alternate reality theory, I don't think it's that much of a stretch to imagine that Lynn could have still ended up with Jason after she saw him hit Pepper. Women have stuck around for a lot worse. He could have pulled some "Come on baby, I'm sorry. You know I would never hit you" BS and she might have fallen for it.

Best story I've seen in a long time! I was engaged the entire way thru. Please more. And it was a timeline switch / Mandela Effect situation right?
@chadraygun52684 жыл бұрын
After that night, Greg felt extremely guilty for failing to do anything about Jason hitting Pepper, his mind came up with the whole Lynn part, which was a fantasy concocted by that guilt, to make Greg believe that he did _something_ good that night. But when he comes across Pepper’s FB, his mind slowly begins to reveal to him of the fantasy world he’s been living in for all those years. In simpler terms, Greg was emotionally distraught after that night, and he created a fantasy world where something good came out of that night, but when he comes across the catalyst as to why he created this scenario in the first place, it leads to him finally getting a reality check which he clearly is shocked of.

The ending doesn’t make any sense because we’re supposed to assume that Greg all of the sudden ended up in an alternate timeline where him and Lynn never let but him and Pepper never worked out because he did nothing when the Wagner guy hit her, but if that’s the case why would Lynn stay with Wagner if she just saw him beat his ex in plain sight in public?

Spoiler: Im assuming if he gets Lynn to remember what happened that night then he should be able to get his life back right? But i guess that cant happen because he seems to be losing his memory too.

Trippy adaptation of the movie "it's a wonderful life", only his ending was not a happy one... he was alone and had nothing because of choices he never made and was living vicariously through the stories he saw about the people he went to school with as he sat on his computer letting his own life pass him by.

PLEASE TELL MW THAT THERE IS A CONTINUATION TO THIS!!! I remember a story that is similar to this one, but it does not stop at the point where this one does. It goes on to describe the details of the protagonist's altered life and him trying to find out what happened to his wife, son and how the OG timeline got f***end up. Does anyone know of the story that I have described? Idk if it was a completely different creepy pasta OR if my brain is making this shit up because I needed a sequel. WTF? DOES ANYONE ELSE REMEMBER A STORY LIKE THAT?

I was enjoying the story until the end. Spoilers --> Incomplete ending. He's now in an alternate reality in which Lynn was still with the other guy, meaning that they hadn't met that night, which also means that he and Pepper would possibly be together as well. The reader/listener got cock blocked with the ending.
