@@ryans413 They are called TENANTS...and when you're talking 22 years much of the onus is on the landlord to refurbish their property. Who said anything about telling tenants not to hang anything on the walls? If this was a case where the tenant was there fir under five years, opinions would be different. According to NYS law, after three years, the landlord has to paint. After five years, surely. After twenty two years...let's be real...

In her wisdom, my mom said, "No, no!" For more than 50 years this sweet woman had taken care of the place as if it was her own, No fuss, no muss. Mom was right, the few bucks we would have made by a rent increase would never make up for the goodwill this woman had shown over the years. When I fixed something for her, she made me a plate of cookies. It was like that. OK, this woman is a slumlord for 22 years, then, budda-bing, budda-boom, she's all of a sudden born again.

We lived in a rental apartment for 17 years when we were given notice of non renewal for our lease. We were all devastated. We moved in as kids (3 of us) with my mom who has MS (and is bound to a wheelchair) and we all grew up there, played at the park, went to school there, learned to drive, graduated school, one moved out of the nest after 15 years. Sadly, it showed me how heartless landlords can be. I know how this lady feels.

Wrong! If her rent stayed the same for 22 years she was LONG over due for an increase. We had tenants that we rented to that were like "Family" and hated to raise their rent after many some years. Eventually we HAD to raise it something It was only $180 a month in the mid to late 1980's! We tried to make it $210 when it should have been $400 minimum and figured we were doing her a huge favor. She called us every name in the book. She moved out and we raised the rent to a fair number and everyone that rented claimed it was fair. Tenants are worse than landlords but slumlords suck!

The defendant is getting $700 more per month with the new tenant after 22 years of savings from not repainting (which she’s legally obligated to do) and nine years of savings from not fixing the central air conditioning. She’s a darn fool for keeping even a nickel for things as frivolous as a 22 year old plastic towel bar and some adhesive on the wall, because she’s in a state where she’ll owe double of whatever is wrongfully withheld.

Not to mention headaches with bad tenants who do actual damage (suing over a door stopper damaging a door? girl please). Or people who refuse to leave and waste months of your time and tons in legal fees. 22 years of mostly no issues. I don’t believe her that she wanted to keep up the house since she never did anything. Painted a hallway in 2a years. Didn’t even fix the central a/c for years. Like come on lady, you’re cheap and not smart. For 22 years there wasn’t even much damage. That’s such a long time.
