I have wanted BCM for a while. If anyone is in the Tulsa area I recommend you contact Chris at H-Farm. His birds are NPIP certified and AI (avian influenza) free. He has two beautiful flocks. One is the highest quality BCM that lay 7-8 color eggs. Some of the ones I got are so dark they look mahogany red colored. His other flock is a mix of blue/black/splash and they are gorgeous. The roosters are ❤. That flock has more 5-6 color eggs but very nice. The main thing is he is passionate about the breed. I’m only 2 years into chickens and have wanted dark BCM eggs for a while. Not only did he take us through the coops to pick out our eggs from the nest boxes he also gave me some 7-8 eggs for free to eat because they had reached exactly 7 days old. He encouraged me to try to hatch them but he won’t sell them at 7 days old. I’m incubating them. I thought that was extremely kind of him. I think he is more about spreading the love of the breed than anything else. And after all that he text me several times referring me to FB groups that he is on & recommends. You won’t find a friendlier or more helpful person.

Flock on front lower or top level would be great prep for a small garden. Easy to walk out and pick a meal.

Yep, especially with all the wood chips I put there after bringing them from the other place. Too bad I won't have any time for gardening until I can comfortably pay my basic bills and the 14% self-employment tax. It'd be nice to have enough time to garden again some year in future.

I bred Cochin Frizzles in black, blue and splash. It's the same in Cochins and Frizzles. The ones that come out black don't have the nice glossy color and can have brassy colors. My daughter always won big with her splash rooster.

Will you talk about Cuckoo Marans. Difference between all the other Marans and the Cuckoo marans. How many eggs per year, how long they live and hardiness.

I'm a bit worried about your chicken's with this Arctic blast storm and the insane low temperatures. I had to cancel my own Christmas travel plans so I can stay home and let sink water drip if the power/heat goes out. It's going to be 5°F where I live Friday night. No telling what the windchill will be so no Christmas for me but keeping my pipes safe, if I can, is more important than food and gifts. Maybe if it gets way too cold you can bring a few chicken's inside, like a few of Number 2's offspring, we can't lose those genes, they're super special. My grandmother used to bring some of her prize chicken's into her kitchen when it was crazy cold. One year a cow had a calf during a blizzard and granny had a baby calf in a big wooden shipping container in the kitchen next to the wood stove. She did that again with a calf born during a hurricane, lol. Good luck to you, I'm sure your flocks well being is on a lot of your viewers minds and hearts during this storm.

Chickens have been existing and roosting in trees in cold weather for centuries longer than we have been raising them. There are breeds that originated Iceland, Sweden, Denmark, people keep chickens in Alaska and Minnesota and Maine and even Canada. Many breeds were developed in cold weather France and England. I don't know why so many people freak out about chickens and cold weather, it only takes a minute of research.
@hannakinn Жыл бұрын
@@BobbleheadHomestead oh sorry guess I didn't do the proper research. I was seeing videos from a lot of people, farmers and homesteaders that raise chickens prepping them for the cold weather. I also saw a video from one homesteaders in a southern state that lost some hens to a cold snap. I was also remembering how my grandparents treated their chickens during bitter cold. My grandfather was a chicken farmer in the 1930s but converted to dairy, tobacco and fruit and vegetable farming. I was neglectful in not researching the specific breeds you have to see how hardy they are. I really only became concerned after you talked about the rooster you have with a damaged comb from frostbite. It made me think that chickens are suspectable to injury from cold weather. I'm glad to hear yours are not. I should've thought about all of the cardinals and small birds that are fine in the winter at my mom's property. As long as those wild birds find enough food to eat to maintain their body heat and a nice bush to shelter in they're fine resting with their feathers fluffed up. Believe me Jeff I won't ever comment again about chicken health because you're the chicken expert not me. My comment actually came from a kind place it honestly wasn't intended to incite anger or hostility.

I'd like a couple zebra hens. My last hens were some fancy breed that were temperamental as heck. No more of that will be tolerated here.

Question: you mentioned that it’s not good to bring in outside stock? I thought it strengthens the group to do that. I also am fascinated by that color chart you showed us. It’s impressive how you manage all those birds!! Also is it true that chickens will lay more eggs if you add red pepper flakes to their feed?
