the secret is to practice slowly, exactly as Pepe showed. Practice perhaps even absurdly slowly. With a metronome. Try to get even volume, and especially pay attention to the "tension and release" that he spoke of, etc. @@netnavigator149

Pepe Romero is one of the best. No doubt. Playing, teaching. I cannot imagine myself playing classic guitar like this. For me he is a legend. But i must say that i dont agree wiht the first part of the explanations when you can see him blocking his fingers in the base of the tumb and in the palm and then "shooting" the fingers. I insist, with all my respect, that this way is too agresive for the hand and it could cause injuries. I think that to practise this picking up your fingers in the palm of the hand without blocking, and then launching and punishing the strings VERY SLOWLY its a better way. Force speed and power come over time, avoiding injuries, not from blocking and shooting your fingers. This metod is obiously slower but i think that if he play flamenco constantly he would have problems with the hands. Excuse me about my poor english, and best regards for everybody
@mofoshrimp
@mofoshrimp 5 жыл бұрын
I think you are talking about flicking the fingers off from the thumb, instead of just flicking them over the strings with their own power. As someone who studies flamenco here in Spain, I can tell you that the former method is now extremely common within flamenco, and is in fact the primary rasgeo most flamenco players use. Flicking the fingers off the thumb actually uses a lot less muscle than just flicking the fingers on their own does. So you don´t have to be worried about injuries... pretty much every flamenco player is doing this now, since the 80s.

He walked up to me one day in California and said: "I'd like you to come to my home and play at my daughter's birthday party". I said: "Sure". We exchanged information and I thought to myself: "I got me a gig".....Then somebody whispers to me: "That's Pepe Romero, one of the greatest guitarists in the world". Later on, I talked to him again and I asked: "Are you kidding me?" For by then I knew I wasn't deserving of shining off his shoes, He with a soft smile replied: "Thing is: I can't sing". I went and played and entertained for his family and friends and everybody had a great time. I would at a latter date would entertain at his father's home.....They were kind and generous, unassuming and gracious...sign of true fine men and incomparable artists....this happened in the early 1980s' in Southern California....... 'couple months ago, I am buying a guitar at La Ciudadela marketing un México city and there is a wall with pictures of the store's owner and.....our mutual friend: Pepe Romero! Wow!

Im honestly not a fan of the way he teaches the technique. It is certainly one way to perform the technique, and he does provide very good instruction on how to play it this way, but I think that everyone ultimately finds their own unique way of playing rasgueado. Some people prefer the 4 finger rasgueo, some (i think most) prefer the 3 finger, some like a bent thumb while others prefer completely flat, and some incorporate both. Some people like their fingers completely perpendicular to the strings (especially with the 4 finger rasgueo), some like to angle their fingers a bit. The most important aspects of the technique are relaxed fingers, sound and evenness. Beyond this I think everyone should experiment with different ways of playing it and figure out what works for them.

I am very surprised at this video. Pepe Romero is a world class classical guitarist but not a Flamenco one. I am also surprised that he has such a heavy accent since he has lived almost all of his life in the United States. His rasquiado is correct and the way it should be played. I don't think that he should be showing off his legs though. I suppose that is the way they used to teach in Malaga.So what is he charging for classes?

He is indeed a flamenco. He grew up in that environment. I believe he became interested in the classical side of guitar as a young man but once a flamenco always a flamenco..

You don't know what you are talking about. Celedonio his father taught classical guitar in Malaga. Classical guitarists at that time did not like Flamenco guitarists. You don't know what it is to grow up in a Flamenco environment. You are Dixie cups, Hot Dogs and bubble gum.

A quote from the LA Times 1987 "In 1959, Pepe made his first recording, featuring traditional flamenco music of his native Andalucia.[1] At 16, he performed for the first time in Los Angeles, playing flamenco with his father and brothers Celin and Angel.[5]" So go pour some pop in your dixie cup, stuff a hotdog in your pie hole you arrogant person.

Mr Pepe needs to explain what usually a flamenco teacher teach you when teaching you rageo and that is that after you release all 4 finger Pinly+AMi you comeback inside with the pinky brng all of the figner back to its original position..that why I say he is not a good flamenco teacher...He is Spanish and he should know better if he actually studies with the Maestros of Flamenco..
@AkiraSamuray
@AkiraSamuray 7 жыл бұрын
You are saying something right and something wrong. Is true that the way you describe the rasgueado is a correct way. But there are VARIATIONS of that rasgueado. 1) There is the one 4 hit you just mention, PAMI, all out strums. 2) Also is a 4 hit rasgueado that is PAMI. PAM out (down) strum and I inside (up closing finger). 3) There is the 5 hit variation that Pepe is teaching. 4) There are other variations I have seen. A Gypsy Flamenco guitar and dance teacher from Andalucía taught me a 6 hit variation, PAMIII. PAMI, all out strums, I inside, I outside, then start again. None are wrong, are just variations. The same happened with tremolo, there is the 4 hit tremolo and variations with more strokes. Probably Andrey already knew the variation you mention. Or Pepe wants him to learn first the 5 hit variation. Or Pepe just only like that variation because have more hits that the 4 hit variation.

Some times you don’t allow a student do a mistake because he can absorb a wrong way to do things. BUT other times you don’t correct the student and you let him make mistake because is a priority that student is learning to do do X thing well while doing Y thing wrong. If you correct the mistake doing Y thing, you could stop development of the X thing is doing well. Later when the student learned to do X thing, and X thing is part of his skill, you can correct his mistake doing Y thing. Is not a rule you apply 100% of the time. Is applied on special cases. The student is not a bad one. He is just learning something new or perfecting something the have not mastered yet. If you look for him on youtube will see he became skillful. The Romeros are from Spain. In Pepe’s family there is not such a thing as when you are a teen going to guitar classes. His father Celedonio was a concertist, taught them guitar since really young age, like age 3. They grow with guitar in their house. The class was not a one or 2 days a week. Class in their house was 365 days, whole year, any given moment. There they train formal way and also, fun traditional parties, Christmas festivities, is their culture. Neither in his family is a separation of Classical and Flamenco. They just learn guitar as soon they start growing. Flamenco is part of their culture.
