Excellent story. It's crazy no one really talks about his mentorship. We've got to start somewhere.
@nancypatricia5113 жыл бұрын
Pepe's story is like a prequel to Star Wars. He was the perfect mentor to young Prince Rogers Nelson and those in Grand Central. It was with Pepe that Prince got his first experience playing and recording music in a studio as well as learning about the construct of songs, the business of music, etc. It was with Christ Moon that Prince partnered and got a taste of writing songs for someone else and education on recording equipment, laying down tracks, and recording his own music. By the time Prince was ready to look for a company that would sign him, Prince and Owen found each other with the help of Chris Moon. It was Owen's experience as a promoter that gave him the experience he needed to get Prince in the door of various record labels and help in negotiating Prince's contract. When Prince's career really started to take off, Owen says that he couldn't take Prince any farther because he didn't have the experience that Prince needed. That is when His management team of Cavallo, Ruffalo, and Fargnoli were hired. There is that transitional period of time that has been often identified with 'Space Heaters" that was messy. There was a lot of stuff being put upon Owen that was really not a part of his job as a manager of Prince and his career. Prince was not the only artist that was on his docket. Prince wrote down all the things that he expected Owen to do as his manager and it was not possible nor the job Owen had signed up for. That is when a team effort was needed. It was not just Prince that was needing managing, but all the mounting support staff necessary to meet the auxiliary needs of the production. Owen was not a go-fer. He was too busy on the phone trying to arrange gigs for Prince. Each man gave Prince the critical elements that Prince needed at the stage Prince was at in launching his career. Pepe's contribution to Prince's career in its very early stages is a very important piece of the puzzle that has been either overlooked or misunderstood in its span and importance in the life and career of Prince. There are a lot of people that got Prince to the top of the heap. Chris Moon is standing on the shoulders of Pepe. Owen is standing on the shoulders of Chris Moon. C, R,& F are on the shoulders of Owen, and Prince is on top. And whose shoulders is Pepe standing on? Bernadette Anderson? It is the people at the bottom that often get overlooked, overshadowed, and sometimes forgotten. Michael Dean makes the point on his show over and over again to, at least, pay respect.

Thank you @@cardenas7pointez Prince was a very determined young man with a goal and the talent to match it. He never would have found these men if he had not been looking for answers and direction at various points along the way. All of these people, and more, were the lines that connected those points to help him reach his goal. That is the way it is supposed to be. Prince is known to say that he didn't look back. But as we can see in his life and in our own, somebody was putting gas in our tank for us to move forward. Thanks again.

This is a very intense interview and it's a lot better than some of the other recent videos circulating with Pepe - that that it's a contest but quality matters. How ironic that Pepe, arguably one of THE MOST influential figures in Prince's career, was for so long shut out of the narrative of the history of Prince. I recall interviews with O Husney, and C Moon and their versions always begin with "the talent this guy had was amazing! His discipline as a musician was impressive!". But of course any explanation as to where that discipline for directing his own career didn't come from them. It came from PEPE WILLIS. So glad Pepe's story is now established!
@nancypatricia5113 жыл бұрын
"But of course any explanation as to where that discipline for directing his own career didn't come from them. It came from PEPE WILLIS." (sp) I don't know what you mean by this statement. Pepe says HIMSELF in this interview that he did not have the discipline that Prince had. Prince had practiced for 12 hours and was down in the basement later that day practicing drums. Pepe said that after four hours of practicing his guitar he had enough. Prince's discipline and talent came from inside himself. No one is taking credit for that, not even Pepe, because no one can. Why does Owen's version start with "the talent this guy had was amazing!"? Because it is Owen's experience when he heard the demo tape. Why would it begin any other way? He is telling his story from his viewpoint. How has Pepe's story been shut out? He has been part of documentaries and has told his story. Now he is placing his story with Prince in the context of his life in the form of a book. If anyone shut Pepe out, it was Prince. I think Pepe feels a bit unsung and forgotten. I can't blame him for feeling that way. But it wasn't Owen or Chris Moon who shut anyone out or took advantage of anyone. Here is an article entitled: The Man That Discovered Prince. www.vice.com/en/article/689pwv/the-man-who-discovered-prince-owen-husney Pay close attention to the last paragraph because it is a retrospect on how Owen handled the "space heater conflict" which in the end was petty reason to be fired. You might say that it was Pepe who discovered Prince. But most people still didn't know who Prince was. It took a lot of people to discover Prince at the various stages of his life. Andre and Prince discovered each other in the 7th grade!! But it wasn't until Prince was discovered by Owen that Prince was anywhere near ready for primetime. Even then, his demos needed to be redone and promo packs put together. And Prince needed to be financially backed. Owen was the last guy before Prince was discovered outside of Minneapolis. Another good article of Prince before The Revolution blog.discmakers.com/2011/06/prince-before-the-revolution/
@keithbell93483 жыл бұрын
@@nancypatricia511 Wow @Nancy that's ALOT to unpack. At first glance I would swear you were Owen Husney's lawyer or his wife. Because you went way beyond someone simply voicing their opinion. But I do appreciate you doing your homework. So yes, I will delve deeper into the references you provided. Still, do I feel Pepe was "shut out" of so many past narratives on the driving influences of who - for lack of a better phrase- got Prince started in this business? Absolutely. Yes Prince's motivation amd drive largely came from himself, for even Prince in one interview said that for him , since he didn't see a future in professional basketball, music was the only alternative for his forseeable future. And yes, his drive was the stuff of legends. Nonetheless, he needed direction on how to navigate thru the hazards of establishing his career in that field of endeavor. And there is alot more involved in that aspect of the story then Chris Moon or Owen Huseny. THAT was my point. You made yours. Now if you excuse me, it's time for me to do some digging... .

@@keithbell9348 We have crossed paths before in a conversation about making a full documentary about Prince. I didn't realize that till just a bit ago. I hesitated to reply at first and to send, but I am glad I did because I now have a clearer picture. No ill intent, just clarity. What you are talking about (I think) is INFLUENCE on a personal level like a father might have on his son. Pepe was with Prince and was a part of his life as Prince was becoming interested in the working of the music business, teaching him things that he was not getting anywhere else, and he was indeed MENTORING these young men. Not Prince, Andre, or Morris had fathers (men) at home. For just that alone Pepe should be getting a salute. Yes, I understand what you saying and I agree. Pepe was probably the most influential person in the life of Prince and his future career. It is foundational. Prince was made ready to be in Chris Moon's studio and collaborating with Chris because of Pepe's influence. That time with Chris Moon, learning the ropes of the studio, gave Prince the experience he needed to produce his first album and the demos he needed to start knocking on doors. I apologize for sounding confrontational. My Grammarly emoji didn't look very sweet but I didn't know how much longer I wanted to tweak my comment. Every conversation that is had makes things clearer. Thank you for responding. Happy digging!

Interesting insights but critically, Pepe Willie may have been supportive of Prince but he also seems to have done this with ulterior motives. Pepe readily abandoned his own band mates for stardom only to attach himself to Prince, after his record deal was dropped. Pepe Willie's own words reveal an individual wiling to do anything to just get into Hollywood or the music industry but never truly making it. Trying to piggy back on Prince's success with the release of 94 East recordings in the mid 1980s also seems opportunistic. And why he was asked to the release.

Another from the early days that has much to share, You can tell that he really still cares and has been effected by the loss of P. Look forward to reading his book. I imagine Pepe pissed off many, He tells it like it is. I never truly understood why Owen was so pissed off just because Prince wanted a space heater. I know it must have been tough working for him at times but still .. odd. Interesting that he helped advise Morris but not surprised. Morris was the comedic star for sure.. scene stealer but he was playing the character both he and Prince created. You can hear Morris the character come out in Prince many times when he laughs and cracks jokes. I often wonder how things would have played out if people like Pepe stayed in Prince's life. He sounds like a positive influence.

I don't think Pepe understands the music industry and artists rights. He sounds old school to me. He says Prince got weird when he had slave on his face etc.. and then says he understood why he did that but then doesn't like albums such as The Rainbow Children because it's not commercial/radio music.? That was part of the reason why Prince wanted to break free in the first place, he was tired of doing the same type of music. He wrote in his memoir the industry keeps trying to shove the commercial type music down our throats. Prince didn't get weird he stood up for what was right/ fair..

I certainly have put my entire life into music, especially the last few years or so, but I have to drop the ego and say - to me - Jacob Collier may be the next in the line of the greatest musicians of all time. I have a great eye for aesthetics, for the feeling and emotion, what moves the heart - but my musical technicality just isn't there yet. Yeah I love a good m7 or Maj6, Supremes type progressions, or riding a groove in mixolydian or dorian, but I'll never be able to hear perfect pitch, and I can only dream to compensate for that one day, hopefully until that day eventually comes. But dudes like Jacob Collier have taken their ear for perfect pitch, and really worked and worked their entire lives towards injecting the heart and soul into that unique skill, and really creating some new type of magic. The Weeknd is cool too lol, no Prince or Stevie, but he and Bruno Mars are definitely a step ahead of the rest in the modern scene, in comparison. Just my thoughts, though.

Well, Warner Bros. also called the radio stations that weren't playing Morris Day and The Times album a lot and to play it more and it became Platinum! Too bad prince used this man like wet toilet paper and left him on the side of the road like many others.

Morris Day did the same thing after all Pepe did for him too. Unreal how greedy they both were and maybe Prince knew the entire time how greedy Morris was. We all know Pepe didn't have to take the time out of his life to help /mentor any of them. It's a shame how people change and treat one another once the _evils_ of money waltzes in ❗🚫💰
