Hurricane Hilary Havoc - Tractor Trailer Jacknife! California is known for being sunny year round, but when it rains, EVERYONE forgets how to drive it seems. Hurricane Hilary was no exception here. While all my viewers from anywhere else in the world laugh at what we call a hurricane, it still never fails to amaze me how easily avoidable accidents happen with some rain.
I'm not sure on the details of what caused this accident, could have been speed or another vehicle swerving into his lane. Regardless, we got the call from California Highway Patrol to respond to a tractor with loaded trailer that jackknifed on the freeway and was blocking lanes. Alex was available and jumped on the opportunity to handle this job with Big Flipper, our 75ton rotator.
His first step was a very very smart move. The way the tractor spun and went forward was problematic to the recovery, and if he just did a regular winch out or pulled the tractor first, it would come in contact with the center divider and cause a ton of further damage. Instead he used the rotator to lift the trailer and drag everything away from the wall.
From here, it was a simple lift and swing to straighten this out. Well, not so simple since one of the bumper pins would not go in, but a Bailey's mini sling fixed that issue no problem. Against logic, the driver said he could finish driving the badly damaged tractor to his destination and refused the tow, while they had a new tractor pick up the trailer. Was a fun and challenging job made easy with the right equipment and operator.

My first thought was, "A screwdriver?? What the hell is going to do with a screwdriver??". As it turns out, it was VERY useful.

The same happens here in Colorado every winter! They drive 75 to 80 during the spring and summer and the first moisture puts them in a ditch! Good job Alex getting it turned so they could move it!

A small piece of PVC with caps on the ends and spring clips to hold it to the door would be a good alternative to the screwdriver. Creative solution though. Interesting conclusion at the end. Turns out everyone drives away. A little water on the roads and the place goes crazy.

Why not pull the trailer backwards until the tractor is straightened out?
@PepesTowingService
@PepesTowingService Жыл бұрын
What a horribly unsafe suggestion on a rainy freeway with a loaded trailer. First the trailer lines had no air is obvious by the video. You would shut down the ENTIRE freeway to Uturn and back up to it, then drag a loaded trailer with locked brakes? Then what do you do when the tractor tries to straighten out and slams against the wall? That’s why Alex moved it first. I hope you aren’t a wrecker operator because this is a truly horrible and unsafe idea. Why not just get a Chinook helicopter and move the trailer too I guess lol
